Trying to cut non-essential things from our budget. Supposedly you can get free screen name from AOL. We have been paying for AOL for years (stupid I know so don't remind me! :headache:). So now I want just the free screen name they offer. What I don't understand is if I can keep the screen name I already have, since it is on my resume and I am looking for a job. Does anyone know how this free screen name thing works if I cancel the paid AOL service I have? Thanks for any info......i'm not very computer savvy as I am sure you can tell!:rolleyes1

I switched from the paid AOL to free AOL a few years ago and as I understand it, the only difference is you won't get free AOL tech support by switching over. Everything else is basically all the same. I just called their 800 customer service number and asked how to switch to the nonpay type of AOL. I (and my DH too) kept my original AOL screen name that I had from day one back when we originally signed up in 1997 I think it was.

As long as you use an outside connection (dsl, cable NOT 56K) all you need to do is login to aol, go to billing and change to the free plan. You do not have to change your screenname. I havn't paid for aol in about 6 yrs! :thumbsup2

One thing to keep in mind, besides needing an outside internet connection, is you won't have access to your Favorite Places. If those are important, you're going to want to copy the URLs somewhere.

:confused3 I still have all my favorite places after making the switch.

How???? Where???? I'll be your best friend if you'll tell me how to access mine! :teeth:

This has been ongoing, as AOL is trying to get away from the paid subscription model and go to something more like Yahoo, and others...

when you log into the software they are there.. I have had the same account for 14 years.. went to Bring your own access plan approx 5 years or longer and its been free. All of my su bemails are still there. The only difference is everything is free.

Thanks for the info! I knew my fellow DISers would know the answer! Just switched to free AOL. Thanks again!

We also went to free aol like 5 oor 6 years ago.
And of course the place I first read about that...the budget boards :goodvibes
AOL was just starting to offer the bring your own connection when the word went out on here that it was possible to get aol free with with outside access. Some had to call more than once to finally get the switch. Right there you figure these boards have said some of us a nice amount of money all of these years later.

I stopped paying for AOL a few years ago too! You can do it online by going to billing or you can call their toll free number.

I think if you switch to the free AOL you no longer get the 'free' McAfee security suite. Probably not a big deal, but wanted to throw it out there. I remember that notice coming up when I switched.

I was just wondering - will your email files/folders remain as well? I'm assuming they would but just want to be sure before I change over. Also, if you have a Portfolio in the Finance dept. does that remain? Thanks in advance...

P.S. Also, can you still log on accessing the AOL icon or do you need to go through another browser?

You can still log in using the Icon. I do it all the time that way. I hate aol.com and avoid signing in that way unless I am away from my own computer.
