We are headed to Disney 2 months from today! Can't wait! We are taking our 3 girls (twins that will be almost 4.5 and an 18 month old). I had been planning on getting the twins a Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty costume to wear to the dinner. However, I can't find any in my price range. The ones at WalMart, Target, Meijer, etc...are either out of stock or they are too small.

I was wondering, if I just get them like princess tee shirts or little dresses will that be ok? Or, will all the other little girls there be decked out in princess costumes and they will be bummed that they aren't either? I would rather spend the money on a nice souvenir for them once we are there than ahead of time on a costume that they will probably never wear again.

have you looked on ebay or even getting a pattern and having them made? They would also double as halloween costumes when they get home!

Most of the ones at Target/ Walmart fit up to a size 6.

If you ask @ Wal-Mart they'll order them in, the normal replenishment there is about 3wks otherwise.

FWIW, I'm taking my 3.5yo DD to Akershus. She will not be wearing a princess dress; it's most likely she'll be in shorts and a (non-princess) t-shirt. I cannot imagine that we'd be the only ones who don't have our kid dressed up.

Have you thought about checking on eBay? A quick search there for "Cinderella costume" right now popped up a Cindy dress for $7, and a three-pack of Cinderella, Belle, and Snow White for $30, all in the right size. Both of those auctions are ending soon, but there are many more like them.

To answer your question, though, we've been to the Akershus breakfast, not dinner, but most of the little girls there were wearing princess dresses. Some were from Disney, some were homemade, but most girls were dressed up in some way. You would probably be fine with just regular fancy dresses, but you might have to put up with a little whining!

(On a side note, we actually buy our Disney souvenirs at home, and take them with us - the ones at the parks are so expensive!)

I brought my 4 yr old to the breakfast last year and she wore a princess tshirt and shorts and was NOT the only child who was dressed in t-shirts and shorts. It was about 90 degrees out and she refused to wear a scratchy dress in the heat..in any event there are plenty of little princesses who do not wear dresses either

Keep an eye on the Disney store website when they have sales. My mom recently picked up a Sleeping Beauty Ballerina dress for $15 (originally $45) for my daughter. If you have one near by, it might be worth calling and asking what they got, and then taking a road trip. Think of it as a fun disney warm-up! ;)
Also check your local TJ Maxx. Their stuff changes often, but recently at the one near me there was a whole bunch for like $10-$15. Good luck!

I had two thoughts when I read your post:

1) I don't know what your price range is but mine is always as low as possible KWIM. I bought my DD's princess dresses for our upcoming trip from Disneystore.com for $23.00 each. They are the ballerina style they were selling earlier this year.

2) Not every child will be all dressed up like a princess and you may find if you do manage to get your girls dresses at an acceptable price that it is still very hot out in October and they don't want to wear them for any longer than they have to. Last year my then almost 6yr old had her dress off before we left the princess storybook lunch that we just barely made after her BBB appt.

Have a great trip. The storybook dining is great. Your girls will love it regardless of what they wear.

We just did this breakfast last week, and my DD (3 1/2) had a summer dress on from the Gap. It was brown, and actually looked nice in the picture taken w/Belle in her yellow dress -- so I'm very happy with our decision to NOT put her in the scratchy princess dress. It was 90+ and I'm sure the heat index made it closer to 102 or so.

I thought that maybe she would make a fuss if there were lots of other little girls there with the fancy dresses -- but there were maybe 2 or 3 girls there in those, so most kids were in regular summer clothes (summer dresses and t-shirts and shorts). Maybe in a couple of months it will be a little cooler, so the princess dress might be okay. It was one of our favorite character meals -- not rushed like some of them. The picture is priceless and the package and the way it's done is really wonderful. Have a great time.

I had the same question regarding my 7 year old GGGG.

A friend did this with her 2 girls when they were 7, last year

You can get both Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Then you can use them for nightgowns for a couple of years if you get them big. Still not cheap, but you would get more value from the additional use. My friends girls felt like princesses in ball gowns and did not feel out of place.

It was about 50/50 when we ate there (September and hot hot hot!) The princesses make a fuss of everyone (including me who just went with my bf, heh! :goodvibes) so i'm sure your DD's will love it no matter what they're wearing :)

We just ate there last month. DDs 10 & 8 neither wore a princess dress or shirt or anything Disney owned :scared1:. They wore purple colors which were complimentary to Belle's yellow dress. They were far from the only 2 not in dresses. I wouldn't give it a second thought to not worry about them being the only girls not in princess garb. Like others have said, the dresses are scratchy and have GOT to be hot!

We have done both, and honestly I think the t-shirt photo came out best. If you are there when its hot, the dress's are very uncomfortable. And lugging them around the park is not fun. You might run to Jo-Anns or your local sewing store and they have these nice big Appliques you can iron on a Tshirt (I have seen Cindy, Ariel, and Snow White), put it with a nice gymbo skirt and you are good to go.

Boy, maybe I"ll really out of the loop, but I didn't even consider getting a princess get-up for the girls at our breakfast in late August. But then again, they are a bit older - almost 7 and 8 - and not the kind of kids who would enjoy wearing scratchy dresses in the August heat. And I know that I certainly would not relish carrying said dresses around for the rest of the day if they just wore them during the breakfast and changed afterwards.

My daughter's dresses all came from eBay except one which came from a great sale at the Disney Store in our local mall. Surf eBay and you will find some very inexpensive yet pretty dresses.

You could just use a favorite dress of hers and maybe do her hair up &/or you can get a can of silver or gold hair spray ($6 at walmart)& add a crown if she wants.

My DC5 will just be wearing a cute pink tank top and skirt. She says she feels like a princess in it, and it won't be hot so she'll be able to wear it all day. TBH, I wouldn't waste money on actual princess dresses. They're scratchy and will probably never be worn again.

The Disney Store has two levels of the Disney Princess dresses. The upper level of these dresses isn't "scratchy". Of course, I haven't worn any of these personally so I have to rely on my expert six-year-old's opinion. I went to the Disney Store where she tried on several dresses then I wrote down what the tags said and surfed eBay.

I found many dresses at a fraction of the cost of the store. If you avoid the Halloween type knock offs sold in Walmart and the like you can get pretty good quality dresses cheap.

Sometimes we rent a locker and other times we just put the dress in a bag on our "park cruiser" (pronounced - RENTAL STROLLER).

In 2 months all the Halloween costumes will be out & you'll have much better success if you do decide on princess dresses.

Personally, I like the princess t-shirt idea, but my girls like wearing dresses & crowns to Disney. It makes them feel special. My eldest (now 8) claims there is nothing in the world like wearing a dress & crown on Splash Mountain. We use glitter & hairspray & glow in the dark fingernail polish too. They love it.

The 18 month old won't matter. Comfort will be the most important thing (and cute photos.)

we love the cindy dress we got from littledressupshop.com. it is smooth inside, has no "itchers" as my daughter put it. it has held up really well and would pack pretty flat. very well made. i think the prices are reasonable for the quality. they hare more like silk and organza than the usual scratchy tulle.
