Hi All,

I am trying to decide if I should get the trip insurance thru ABD for our 2011 Ireland trip or independently. We are staying in London a week before using Marriott points, and air is under frequent flyer points.

Recommendations please:)

Well, looking back at your posts, it seems like you booked only a few days ago, so you are still eligible to get a pre-existing condition waiver if it's offered. Several independent insurance policies will cover that. I still don't know if the ABD one will; I've gotten conflicting information in the past. If that's a concern for you, I'd suggest you call ABD & find out if they offer the waiver or not. If they don't, and you want the waiver, you'd need to buy independently.

If it's not a concern for you, then another consideration is what do you want to cover? If it's just the loss of the cost of the ABD if you cancel beyond the cancellation period, or medical coverage while you're on the ABD, then ABD's policy, although a bit over-priced, will be fine.

If you want to cover any costs in case you have to change your flights, or any medical expenses before you arrive in Ireland for the first day of your ABD, then the ABD policy will not cover that. They won't cover if your luggage is lost or delayed by the airline. (I'm assuming since you're using points that you're booking that yourself). If you get stuck in an airport or somewhere overnight either coming or going home, they won't cover the cost of a hotel room.

Again, it depends on what you want covered, and what you're willing to take a chance on.

I purchased ABD insurance for my upcoming trip and I paid for it within a couple days of booking my tour because I wanted pre-existing conditions covered. I was told that they were covered under the ABD policy as long as it was paid for (not just added on - because you don't pay for that until you make your final ABD payment) within that X day window.

Forgot to add - to see what else is out there, go to www dot insuremytrip dot com. I've purchased policies from them in the past when I've gone to places like east Africa and Thailand but never made a claim. You can purchase your policy on-line so it's very convenient.

You may want to check reviews of different travel insurance companies.

We have always booked independant insurance for our trips, luckily have never needed to make a claim. ABD's price is high, but if ABD stands behind it or helps you make a claim (I don't know if they do) then it might be worth it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I decided to book independently so I could get medical for our London piece of the trip.
