ABD Next Adventure Discount vs Early Booking Discount

Hey all. I'm excited about our first ABD trip Sep 2023 (I know we will love it). It's the 5 night trip in SoCal. I have DGC that I got at discounts burning a hole in my pocket, so I'm already looking to book another ABD trip and we're thinking of Japan because were were already planning a Japan trip for Fall of 2023 anyway. There are currently early booking discounts on those departures. But it is a pricey trip regardless. I know that ABD often offers discounts for booking future trips if booked within 45 days after returning from an adventure. Is that discount better than the early booking discount typically is? And I assume the answer is no, but can it be combined with early booking discounts? I was thinking we could go on our SoCal adventure, and book Japan for 2024 or 20225 instead upon returning and thus getting the next trip discount if that's a better discount, and possibly (but probably not) the early booking discount.

Thanks!

I haven't seen one of those bounceback discounts (book another trip within xx days of returning from your ABD) in a while, so I can't give you any info on that. I don't know how often they are offered or how much they tend to be for, or if they are only for trips for the same season or not.

But first off, I would not base my decisions for next year on the fact that there are Early Booking Discounts still around a month after release for Japan this year. Japan probably still has EBDs right now because they are not open to tourism yet, with no indication of when they will be, so it's probably a pretty hard sell for such an expensive trip for 2023 at this point).

But the ABD trips for any particular season only are out for the following year (with a few off-season exceptions). So right now, only the 2022 and 2023 dates are out for Japan, so you couldn't book 2024 or 2025 now anyways. If you're talking about a year from now (May of 2023 release vs Sep 2023 after your trip) then when you get back from your 2023 SoCal trip, at the most, you'd only be able to book for 2024, not 2025. And you are taking the chance that not only might there not be any EBDs left by September (highly likely, as ABD only offers a handful per departure) but the actual price of the ABD may have gone up considerably by then as the trip filled, so the bounceback discount would not be worth that much compared to opening day with an EBD.

ABD rarely allows you to stack discounts, but again, I haven't gotten a bounceback offer in a long time, so I don't know for sure if you could stack them.

ETA: I re-read your post and saw that you are DVC. So I believe you *should* be getting the opening day pricing no matter when you book your trip. So that shouldn't be a big issue. But if you are planning on booking using DVC points, not cash, then I'm pretty sure the EBD does not apply. DVC has their own pricing in points, and you have to book your ABD through them. If you are doing a mix (like one reservation with points and one with cash) then you have to pay for the cash one in full when you book. And I'm not even sure if the bounceback offers apply to DVC either.

Thanks for this. It seems there are no November dates for 2023 anyway, which is when we wanted to go. I'm assuming they don't normally do November departures, perhaps it's too cold. October 2023 still has EBD, may be able to work with that.

No, I've never seen a departure for Japan past October.

By the way, I just added this to my post (I was editing as you replied):

I wouldn't book with points because I'd rather rent them out and use the cash--turns out better that way. But thanks. From what I understand, I can get the opening day price as a DVC member but this may not be as good as the EBD price. I haven't understood what the opening price is, really. For instance, the trip I'm looking at is $10399, down to $9899 thanks to EBD. Is the opening day price not the $10399 price?

It probably is the $10399 price, since the EBD is still available, so there probably aren't enough people booked yet for the price to have been bumped up. (ABD increases the price as the trips fill up) But the only way to know for sure is to look at it on opening day. (Or you might get a Vacationista to tell you what it was). For the DVC opening day price, the EBD does not count.

We were offered the bounce back discount after our Alaska AbD last year June. The amounts are comparable to the EBD, and EBD can sometimes be higher.
