ABD Greece 2016 Trip Report

Thanks so much. REALLY appreciate the review and comments. From our standpoint, the more muted Disney approach makes it more appealing...we have certainly enjoyed our trips to WDW with the kids, but we are NOT big Disney people, and something that was very Mouse focused wouldn't appeal to us.

Thank you so much for your review of your Greece trip for all of us to savor. I especially enjoy your wrap up observations pro / cons. It is great to get an honest contrast on what the trip offered and comparison to other travel companies that offer family trips. I sit here hoping for a P.S. or P.S.S. to your trip report so I can continue to enjoy.

LOL so glad you enjoyed. I wanted to think about it for a couple days so I made myself wait to post. Sometimes you need a little perspective :)

I, too, liked the pros/cons. I thought it was a very real take on the trip and what you liked and what you think could have been better/different. Great report! Thanks for sharing. Greece is definitely on my list, but a little bit further down than some other destinations.

Thanks for reading! Greece was kind of a compromise destination for us, but it ended up working out really well. We all enjoyed it.

The muted approach worked for us as well--especially with the kids getting older :)

Final Thoughts:

I've had a few days now to reflect on the trip and wanted to put my thoughts in some kind of order. Overall I think Greece is a very solid ABD offering, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves history, mythology, beautiful beaches, lots of sunshine, and mediterranean food. We all had a great time—even special needs DS19, which was wonderful. It is probably my second favorite ABD. The first year Scotland itinerary that we took in 2013 I suspect is going to be hard to beat. We did Ireland in 2007 so I don’t remember it well enough to compare, but I think Greece edges ahead of it because of the food.

Chris and Mary were both exceptional, which seems almost axiomatic with ABD guides. But I suspect they are among the elite in rankings from surveys. Our tour did have a slightly different tone/feel than the other ABDs we’ve been on, and I think that’s because neither of them were/are cast members. On every trip we’ve taken before one or both of the guides were cast members, and the tone was definitely more rah rah. Not in a bad way at all, but the difference at least for me was noticeable. I liked it toned down—more real, if you like—although the Disney feel was distinctly missing. ABDs in general have a very muted Disney feel, but this one was even more so. We could easily have been with Tauck.

I think the muted Disney aspect of the tour also might have something to do with the location of our particular tour. In Europe, I suspect, because of the anti-American sentiments in some areas, they probably don’t want to do anything to draw attention to the “Disney” part of the equation. The guides didn’t hold the paddle one time—Mary usually held up an orange umbrella or her blue clipboard. I think I saw an ABD sign on our bus once. They wore their badges, but no one—including the kids—wore the lanyards or pins at any time. The first night we weren’t exactly told not to but it was not so subtly suggested. Except for the pins that quickly went into our suitcase and a couple Disney movies we watched on the bus rides, there wasn’t anything Disney at all about the trip. Whether this would be disappointing to anyone with younger children, I’m not sure, but I thought I’d mention it.

What I liked:
—The archeological sites we stopped at were all must sees. There wasn’t anything that I would remove, and I had quite a few unexpected surprises. I expected to love the Parthenon—and I did—but I didn’t expect Knossos and Akrotiri to be so incredible.
—The balance in the itinerary between “whisperer time” (aka museums and archeological sites) and activities. I personally would have liked less on my own lunch and shopping time (and maybe a few more walks/hikes/kayaking/donkey rides or something), but I thought overall the mix was good.
—The food. If you like roasted meats, incredible cheeses, the best pita bread I’ve ever had, farm fresh fruits and vegetables, olives, honey, and yogurt, you are in for a treat. Some of the best meals we had were at the seaside on your own restaurants, recommended by the guides, but pretty much all our meals were terrific.
—The cultural activities. This ABD had a lot of them, and I really think they add so much to the overall richness of the experience. My kids loved the dancing and music, and I love how they incorporated the rural village, cheese-making, etc, and worry bead making. Some of these arts and crafts things seem silly when you are reading the itinerary, but I’ve learned from experience that those are often the things that stick out when you look back.

What I didn’t like:
—The heat.
—I thought there were maybe too many shopping visits and on your own lunches. It felt like we had too many of these in a row. There were too many on your own meals in general for me.
—Not being able to use a credit card in many eateries in Athens
—Having to put toilet paper in the wastebasket. Sometimes being from a “new” country with good pipes is not a bad thing, LOL.
—The transition day. I wasn’t alone in feeling as if this were an awkward day. Given the need to catch the ferry to Crete, I’m not sure how it could be changed, but it felt like a wasted day. A late check out would have made all the difference.
—I was surprised by the number of families that skipped a day to stay at the resort in Crete. I’m not sure if this was just our group, but it’s something Disney should think about. I suspect people were craving more beach/resort/water time. I, too, would have preferred maybe one more physical outdoor type of activity. The ones we had were all my highlights: the hike to the top of the volcano, jumping from the boat into the sea, and the sea kayaking.
—I wanted to ride the Donkeys up the hill. I wish they would put it back on the itinerary or make it an option.

Value:
—This is always hard to qualify, but given the nice hotels, the interior transportation involved, the paid for by Disney meal at the restaurant of our choice, and the great meals, this felt like a decent value to me (at least not a total rip off like the ABD add-on felt like last year). We didn’t really have any VIP/special access type of experiences like we did on our Scotland or Backstage Magic trips, which made those stick out value/worth it wise, but the overall quality and balance of the tour made paying the Disney premium feel more worth it. I do prefer the way Nat Geo does it with paying for all the meals—it’s easier to budget for, and we were often too tired to think about food. A handful of “on you own” meals may not seem like a big deal, but they add up. Those six or seven meals ended up adding quite a bit to our overall vacation budget.

Surprises:
—These were one of the things that really stuck out for me with my early ABD trips, and Disney seems to be moving away from them. I wish they would put some more back in.

Group Size:
—35 worked out well. I really think ABD should go back to limiting the groups to 35 or at the VERY max 40. The 49 we had last year on the Baltic’s Add-on really negatively impacted the enjoyment of our trip. An extra 14 people makes a huge—huge—difference. The ideal group size to me is for a family trip is 30-35. That is enough to hopefully give a good age mix for the kids, and yet not too many people to get to know. The really nice thing about this trip was that we pretty much sat with every family at least once.

Extra costs:
—Since I was keeping track of it for this trip, I thought it might be useful to give you an idea of our actual extra costs for this trip (not including airlines which I used miles for).
—Note that the cost of meals is not for super fancy dinners, and it doesn't include alcohol so adjust accordingly.
—The “extras” include: Hotel pre-night (one family room), guide gratuities, airport transfer at end of ABD (grrr), misc. food while on tour (i.e. stopping for coffee), all the “on our own” meals, and room service breakfast for our first night. The grand total was an extra $2091 for the four of us. We also bought insurance that covered our extended trip for about $640 (not through Disney).

Thanks to everyone for reading along. Hope you enjoyed :)

It's interesting to me how many of your pros/cons overlap with mine (some of which I didn't articulate very well in my trip report), and I was on a completely different trip/itinerary (Italy - Amalfi Coast).

We did use the orange paddle a few times (mostly in Florence), but like you said, the Disney presence was really toned down. The guides didn't once wear a shirt with the ABD logo, nor did they wear their name tags. We also didn't wear our lanyards/pins (which I liked, because I don't like having them in the pictures, and they really would have gotten in the way of the whisper devices). I prefer this, actually. I don't need my trip to be Disney-fied. I just need the VIP/concierge level perks that traveling under the name of Disney can bring.

I also had an issue with the meals...not that there weren't enough provided, but that the timing was bad. For example, there were a couple of days when we were provided breakfast only. And then there were other days (like the last day), where we had both lunch AND dinner. I quickly realized last year that breakfast + one ABD meal is more than enough food for the day. To have breakfast plus two ABD meals just left me feeling ridiculously uncomfortable (my will power is terrible, as I am not one to leave delicious food on my plate). It would have been nice if these meals could have been spaced out a bit better so that there weren't two mega-meals in one day. I suppose this is highly dependent on the itinerary and other scheduled activities, though.

ITA that Disney needs to think about limiting group size. We had 27 (after traveling in a group of 24 last year). It was perfect. I think we could have handled a few more, but 40+...no way!

I also noticed that we didn't have too many special access/VIP experiences. We visited the Accademia and the Uffizi along with everyone else, although, we did get to enter ahead of a very long line of people. But, we didn't avoid any crowds inside. We did get a private boat ride in Capri, which I thought was great. And, we had local guides (and the whisper device) at every single location. We didn't use the whispers at all in Germany last year, and the local guides we did have there didn't stay with us as long.

I also felt like there was maybe a little too much "on your own time". But, I also respect the fact that some people need time away from the group, so I suspect they are trying to strike a balance here. I think a good compromise might be for the guides to offer "extra" activities during the down time (I noticed on the Italy/Switzerland trip report the guides offered an unscheduled hike). Or maybe even if the guides could share activities during the down time (they don't have to lead them, just tell us where to go). There was a great little hike in Capri that we figured out on our own (and wasted a lot of time and energy in the process). It would have been nice to have someone point us in that direction. The on your own time recommendations tend to focus more on shopping and food, though.

Your transfer to the airport on departure day was a definite drag. I hate to hear that's how they handled the situation, especially since ABD has no issue getting people to the airport for early departures (my son and I rode, just the two of us, in a private car to the Florence airport for a 630 am flight). You shouldn't get the shaft simply because your flight leaves later. They really should have covered that expense.

Thanks for the trip report! I have considered Greece myself; I doubt that we will make the trip anytime soon, for various reasons, but I loved reading about yours!

Wow, what a fantastic trip report! We're booked on the Aug 5 trip and I was really interested to read how you spent your OYO time, especially on the islands. I've picked up lots of tips now from both you and SayHello, thank you for that! We are the type to venture out at night for dinner, so I guess we're on our own for those ideas! I've promised our boys beach/pool time every day as I am a bit worried about the heat. As dorky as it looks (can you say tourist?), my son used a sun umbrella 2 years ago when he was 10 on the Italy trip and it was a lifesaver. Thank you again for sharing. The countdown is on!!

A note on the minor spoiler: I also like the new format they used and the AirDrop ability was awesome!!

Great trip report! I see they kinda tweaked the last day... great memories from when we did ours! :)

/
CaliforniaGirl09, I noticed on my second read through that there was no mention of the Olympic stadium tour on the Athens day? Is it closed or did Disney take this out? If they have taken it out, does anyone have a feel for whether it's worth doing on our own?

I also suspect the increased lack of "Disney" by the guides is driven by some security concerns. When we were on our ABD last year, we were told that's why they took "Adventures by Disney" off the paddles. It's also why there are a few locations other tour companies go that Disney doesn't (security is why they don't have an Argentina/Patagonia trip). It wouldn't surprise me if the ABD Powers that Be told the guides they didn't need to wear as much (or any) ABD stuff, and to limit the lanyards to diminish the visibility of it being both a group tour and a Disney group tour. We're big Disney people, but we aren't big "visibly Disney" people, if that makes any sense. I don't mind that there are just slight Disney touches and would likely get annoyed if it were more than that.

Also, thanks for the trip report! I really enjoyed the pics; looks and sounds like you all had a great time. Another one to add to the list!

Is it the sort of thing where if someone got it via AirDrop, they could pass it to someone else (me!) using Dropbox or something else Android compatible?

That is funny that we had so many overlapping issues. I'm sad to hear that other Adventures aren't having the VIP/Special Access type of experiences. It seems like they are moving away from that, which is a bummer as that was one of the major draws for our family and the prime justification for the high cost. I was really bummed with how they handled our "late" (3 pm!) flight out with the airport transfer, especially as 1/3 of the families were in the same general time frame. ABD needs to review this "policy." Airport transfers should be included.

You'll have to let me know how much you end up venturing out. We were seriously exhausted both from the long days and the excessive heat--it seemed like most of our group was in the same frame of mind. I will admire your energy! Bring the umbrella. We actually brought one from DD16. She's a ginger as you can see from the pictures and got over the dork thing a long time ago, LOL. She burns so easily. We didn't end up using it as we were able to stake out shade under trees, but we were ready!

Smart kid.

I agree!

I'll have to go back and read your trip report--didn't realize the last day had been tweaked. The "surprise" that I mentioned was something the guides did that was new.

CaliforniaGirl09, I noticed on my second read through that there was no mention of the Olympic stadium tour on the Athens day? Is it closed or did Disney take this out? If they have taken it out, does anyone have a feel for whether it's worth doing on our own?

Ack! We definitely did that, and it was fun--especially watching the kids (and teens) race. They did two different "heats"--one for the younger kids and one for the teens. Not sure how I missed including the pics from that. Here are a couple. Thanks for the great catch!

Sayhello

I assume so if they knew how to use both--which I don't. I was hoping that Christ would send the video via Dropbox, but he hasn't yet. Our pictures aren't up yet either though.

I guess the nameless sign depends on the country? In Norway last year, I noted the nameless sign the guides used and they explained that it was for security reasons. In Australia, the guides were still using the sign with ABD on it but in the airport, they used the nameless one.

And I just took a peek on Troy's photo holding the sign during our hike in Tasmania, and he was carrying the one with ABD on it. But then again.... there's nobody in Tasmania.... :)

When we travel with other similar companies we are met at the airport with our name written across a white board or cardboard. No signs or paddles are used by the guide(s). It really not hard to pick out the "Americans" overseas. (LOL)

This is one of the best things about Chris B. and we mentioned it to him, too. He said, "Is that okay?" When I am in SE Asia or Greece, I don't want to feel like I am in Disney World/Epcot and his style makes it more immersive. Our eight year old does not miss it, either. He just loves the outdoor activities and the other Juniors. That said, one of our other favorite guides is totally rah rah and we just love her to death but she is on different types of itineraries. I think they do a good job of matching the personality of the guides with the location.

Great trip report! This was our first trip and we loved it! It's still my husband's favorite with SE Asia being a close second. Was Andreas your shepherd? I hope he was not omitted from the trip. What a character!!!

Haha! My husband calls me a "chronoptimist" - one who is overly optimistic (read: unrealistic) about what they can get done in a certain amount of time!

Oh, I am so happy to hear that the Olympic stadium wasn't cut! My very sporty DS14 is really looking forward to this! Thanks for those pictures.

And thanks again for the trip report, I'm sure that took a lot of time. I loved reading it (twice!)

Agreed! My other favorite tour guides are more rah rah, too, but Chris is just amazing. Andreas? Hmm... do you mean Mr. Manolis? I never heard his first name, it could have been andreas. He was the "mayor." I don't remember a shepherd.

Oops... this was supposed to be quoted in the above message. Not sure what happened. I like the chronoptimist! Too funny. You guys will have a great time, and the stadium was really fun. Glad you enjoyed and have a blast on your trip. Make sure to report back!

You didn't meet up with the shepherd and watch him milk his goats? He was the one who made the cheese on our trip, also (the "mayor" did take us around as our guide of the village).

Sayhello

This was Andreas the shepherd.

Nope, definitely no goat milking and Andreas doesn't look familiar. We had the "mayor" Mr. Manolis though. He did our tour through the village. There was another guy for the cheese making, but I don't remember his name. I'll see if I can dig up a picture. Bummer :(

EDITED: I did post a picture of the guy we had. He looks younger. It's in this post: http://www.disboards.com/threads/abd-greece-2016-trip-report.3522516/page-4#post-56064882

Yes, your guy is definitely younger. I hope Andreas is OK. :(
