Abandoned Attractions

I remember a great meal on the Empress Lilly when I was a kid. Prime rib and they made their own potato chips, which was, like, earth-shatteringly new back in '88. At least to me! We also ate a seafood place there, as well. We must have stayed very close to there (DTD -- before it was DTD and it was still just the Disney village) on that second trip, but my mom doesn't remember the name of the hotel and I certainly don't.

We loved Chef Mickey's when it was on the riverboat.

I don't think Chef Mickey's was ever on the Empress Lilly unless it was before they started the plated character breakfast. The Chef Mickey's restaurant was at DTD, but not on the boat. I ate at the restaurant for lunch when our dd was about 2..she is 19 now.

My dad used to take us every year to WDW and we always had a character breakfast on the Empress Lily. I even remember one year it was my birthday and they used to ask if there were any birthdays, anniversaries, etc and Goofy put me up on the top of the booth and everyone in the room sang Happy Birthday to me. I still have pictures with the big red booth seats. In one Pluto tickled my brother to the ground and he was laughing so hard he started to cry.

My grandma saved tons of stuff from our family's early Disney trips. Those items have been passed down to me. I am now the proud owner of two plastic mugs from the Empress Lily circa 1992 and a stack of children menus from the Biergarten but these offer actual kids' meals. I don't remember the Biergarten ever being more than just a buffet but from the menus, it must have been a regular table service restaurant at some time. The menus are from either 1988 or 1992 but I don't remember eating there.

We ate at the Biergarten around that time and it was definitely a table service restaurant. I was actually surprised when I found out it had become a buffet, which I thoroughly enjoyed, btw.

When did this train stop running at Ft Wilderness?
We were there 6 years ago, but in the cabins.

Btw, the pool at ft Wilderness is nothing fancy, just a plain ole' rectangular swimming pool. I'm surprised Disney hasn't made an awesome themed pool there. Not that I know of anyways.....

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS THREAD !!! Thanks to All of you for sharing!
I am fascinated by all of this & photos !

Also, I thought Disney was building a new moderate resort......
But I read here it's a new Value.....

BTW, Spectacular photos of the ghost towns of abandoned resort and river country etc......creepy and spooky, but can't look away....strange....

The pool went through a major rehab about a year ago. Adding a slide that uses the old water tower from River Country

Are you sure that was Superstar TV? That sounds more like something that my sister and I did when we were young. My dad used to work for Superstar TV and that was more of a full blown show/attarction ,with scenes even from Howdy Doody, than what this was. This took place inside a store of some sort. My sister and I did not do the "spaceship" theme but some "Hollywood" theme (I was a director of some sort and my sister was an actress trying to make it big); they gave us costumes, props, and we had to read lines from cue cards. My dad did get the tape (but I am not sure if he paid for it, because he knew the peeps who ran the equipment there, LOL). I have not watched that tape in a few years, because my VCR is in the attic, but maybe if I drag it out it will say the name of this smaller attraction.

I remember I got picked for the Superstar TV Show once. I got to play Gilligan from Gilligan's Island. :rotfl:

I Also remember YEARS ago doing something similar to what you were mentioning about the paid video "experience" thingy.... only at Universal. They had a Paramount store next to the King Kong attraction and my dad, brother, and I did a cute little Star Trek video. I got to be the captain. :teeth: I still remember my brother being the helmsman and actually pretending he had a steering wheel to "drive the ship" :rotfl2: The place that store was located is now part of the Mummy Queue.

I love this thread! It fun (and a bit sad) to be reminded of all of these things.

I'm particularly intrigued by the posts about Communicore. I've been trying to remember some of it but I only came up with a dull static display involving energy and there was a place to take surveys. I also remember an amusing robot that talked to people. His name was SMRT-1. Later there was also a place with video games prototypes (Sega?) that I had trouble getting DS out of. ;)

With the old Communicore, I really remember enjoying the "make your own rollercoaster" game (with Gopher!).... and also the "steer your taxi/ambulance thru the city streets" touch-screen games. I'd kill hours on that one. Of course, I do also remember SMRT-1 and how you could ask him questions.

I think the coolest thing in the old Communicore though had to be the little backstage magic show. I almost want to say it was located around where MouseGears has expanded into beyond the old store. You would actually go upstairs, and thru a 1-way mirror be able to see down into the computer room below Future world. You then had a tour guide who was "shrunk" and would walk around on top of the computer terminals talking about them and how they controlled so many things around the park. (projected on the mirror).

Post-Innoventions, I remember the big sega play area. My first (and only) experience with the Sega Channel was there. I also remember the line of "simulator" racing games where you could line up and play the full on arcade game and race against the other machines.

There was also the Imagineering lab, where you could go in and see a presentation of a new "ride" that the Imagineers where working on within their lab there. You would sit on the floor, and all around you were the Silicon Graphic machines that they were programing the "ride" on. They would also choose like 3-4 people to demonstrate the "ride". the "Ride" BTW? It's the Aladdin's Magic Carpet game now located in DisneyQuest. (Yup, you guessed in... I also got picked for this a few times and enjoyed playing around with it. I actually got pretty good. :rotfl: )

Looks like a spray-painted Dreamfinder from the old Imagination attraction, placed in another scene somewhere that I don't recognize.

on my way to nowhere in particular, I miss one of the coolest dark rides

Mr Toad's Wild Ride

the ending is killer:angel:

Disney is smart to keep certain rides exlusive to different parks. It was one of the tipping points to get me to visit DL:goodvibesto show it's way cooler than youtube portrays

Woweee! This is a really interesting thread.

First when I saw the pics of the abandoned River Country and Discovery Island I thought, this is like those Discovery Channel programs about Titanic.

Then when I saw the old commercial from the 80's, I felt like I was part of the Dharma initiative (from Lost).

i just wanted to comment on great it is to read about all this stuff. I do remember the 20,000 leagues . My family loved this ride. To bad its gone. We also really miss the Living Seas original. That was one of our fav. to bad its gone. That was fun for all ages.......

The more I think about it, I really don't miss all of the abandoned attractons.

River Country: I only enjoyed the drop slides (they should really remove the debris from the site.) Typhoon Lagoon and BB are more than enough.

Discovery Island: You can see everything at AK (remove buildings please).

Nemo Ride: Was always disapointed that there weren't real fish (big Florida stain bass) in there.

Sounds Dangerous: Was in need of an update.

Mr. Toad's ride: I miss it.

Wonders of Life: I miss it. WDW needs to do something here.

Imagination Pavillion: WDW needs to upgrade here.

Pleasure Island: It was okay but only if you had someone along to watch the kids.

Here's the big one in Fantasyland. On the left, you see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Great ride, closed in 1994. The white roofed building was torn down and filled in, the lagoon was drained, the green roofed area (for boarding the Nautilus submarines) was torn down and replaced with Pooh's Playful Spot. Another corner of the 20k Leagues lagoon became Ariel's Grotto. (See picture on the right, Spring 2010.)

Now all of that is walled off (red line) for the next transformation of that space. You can see that the big Pooh tree, with Piglet and the house that said "Mr. Saunders," has been moved across the way and placed in front of the Pooh ride. Cool info: when the Pooh tree is opened again, go inside and look over the doorway. There is a blemish in the wooden framing. Look closer and you will see that it is a carving of the Nautilus! A tribute from Disney Imagineers to the old beloved ride which once stood where the Pooh tree was placed. Gone but not forgotten.
