Abandoned Attractions

I stayed at the Villas you are talking about in 1999. Here's a pic:

I believe they were "The Villas at Disney Institute" if I remember correctly? Maybe this was another incarnation of what you are talking about. :confused3

I wondered what happened to those. We stayed in them before too. When we were there it was like Lake Buena Vista villas or something like that.

I loved Kitchen Cabaret and Food Rocks! Kitchen Cabaret is one of the few things I remember about my first trip when I was 7. :cool1:

If you take the Backstage Magic tour, you can see -- and even control -- the Bonnie Appetite audio animatronic from the show. Or what's left of her.

Does anyone remember the Horizon ride at Epcot? I used to love going in there as a child. I couldn't wait for that smell of oranges as you walked into the building and being able to pick how you returned from your journey at the end. It so strange to think of all the things that you remember as a child that aren't there anymore. The first time I went back after being so many times as a child, I remember 20,000 leagues was gone and I just couldn't picture Disney without it. I know things change with that times, but some old favorites...you just can't replace that feeling you got as a child.
Horizons was my favorite ride at Epcot and I remember being so sad when Disney let it get all ragged and run down and then tore it down. I think that the current attraction comes nowhere close to the Horizons. :sad1:

wasn't there a "20,000 leagues under the sea" ride in the Magic Kingdom at one point?

Indeed the ride was closed back in the mid 90's... The funny thing is, is that the lagoon remained until 2004 after finding nemo was released... Why I brought Finding Nemo up is because Disneyland refurbished and remodeled their 20,000 leagues into a nemo attraction... They could have easily have done that at MK back in 04 especially since the ride was drained and not even operating...

Might have already been mentioned, but......

Ft Wilderness Railroad
Studio's Residential Street
Lake Buena Vista townhouses - leased by sponsors. Current site of Saratoga Springs.
Diamond Horseshoe
Penny Arcade on Main St

Here's an interesting site with a lot of interesting reading. Mostly about Disneyland, but plenty more as well:

Yesterland

Not to change the subject, but why do you suppose the canoes and keelboats still exist at some other parks but no longer in Florida?
Loved this website. I could spend a long time reading this!

I may be in the minority here but I think these photos are fascinating! (And a tad bit creepy.)

There use to be a show on t.v. called "The Scariest Places on Earth". Some of these places look like they could qualify. I wonder if they are haunted by the ghosts of Disney Charecters Past?

I totally agree. I can't stop looking at them!!

I am new to these boards and have been going to Disney for years, so just loving this thread.

Not exactly an "abandoned area" but didn't they used to have pink flamingoes at Epcot, on a pond on the side as you walked into World Showcase? (Please don't tell me I am cracking up!) Everytime I am there, I look down and miss seeing them!

I remember there was flamingos somewhere....not sure if it was Epcot or not....it has been a long time. I did take photos of them though. I know they were somewhere at one point.

Yes.
The flamingoes were to your left (just off a small bridge) as you walked towards Mexico from the central bridge between FW and WS.

On the map below, it was in the area immediately to the left of the "M" in Mexico, and in front of the old Odyssey Restaurant.

I'm with you on that! In fact, I was thinking of creating a story with that idea. (Anyone ever heard of NaNoWriMo- It is a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November.) I know it is a while away, but I think it would be fun! (PM me if you want more information!)

I miss the Tarzan show that they used to do in AK; it was all on roller blades...

I miss the old Figment ride.

I miss the old Animation Studio at MGM when you could actually see an animator working on the next Disney film on the board- we got to see them working on Mulan and Lilo & Stitch...

I'm with you on all of these!! Tarzan was fantastic!!! I also saw the old Figment ride and the Animators working when I took my first trip at 13- what an impression both made! From then on, I wanted to be an animator! (Umm. . needless to say, I'm not there yet!)

I LOVE this site! :goodvibes I can't believe the changes the've made to California Adventure! I went there in 2001 when it was brand new, and I had no idea so much had changed. Kinda sad! I still need to look at all the Disney World stuff! Thanks for posting!

I just want to say this thread is both awesome and sad at the same time! Thanks for starting it OP!!!!!:hippie:

It was VERY expensive to refurb the Submarine Voyage (different theme), and they didn't start it until 2006...a year after the decision to fill in the 20k lagoon had already been carried out.

I was actually surprised that they even did that - both attractions were generally considered to be maintenance nightmares and had very slow load rates.

I don't know if 20k was in significantly worse condition. 20k closed 4 years earlier than SV.

Do you mean these flamingos

You may be cracking up but not because you remember seeing flamingos;)

Shafke,

Yes...those are them! Weren't they located on the side of the bridge going into World Showcase (on the same side as the Mexico pavilion)? Thanks for the photos!

One of the bridges, yes.
It is not the central WS bridge, but it is the bridge that crosses into WS from the (now closed) Odyssey Restaurant.

Catwalk Bar. I was allowed to go up there a couple of years ago to take a quick look, all the fixtures were still in place.

We miss Horizons too - DD and I took one last ride right before it closed, and we got stuck for about 20 minutes. We didn't mind at all.
