I'm having t-shirts made as a present for everyone in our group. It's a surprise, so I can't ask the mom, and I only have cats. They don't wear the same sizes as kids--so...what size t-shirt should I request for a 5 to 6 year old kid????

Are they Disney shirts? I think Disney clothes for kids run big.

My small-to-average 5yo son wears a children's small

No, these are regular t-shirts--a friend of mine designs and makes shirts. So, you think a child's small?

Sizing for kids (youth) t-shirts: Small: 6-8; Medium 10-12; Large 14-16.

My 7 year old daughter (she's tall for her age) wears a medium. With kids' clothes, I have found that it is generally "safe" to get the larger size if I don't know what size to buy. They can always tuck it in or grow into it! :D Good luck!

Ask if there is corresponding number sizes. Usually anywhere from a 4/6 to a 7/8. My 5yo DS can wear a 4T or 4/5 my 6 yo DD at the age of 5 wore a 6/6x or 7/8. Especially if these are homemade decorated shirts that they will want to wear for a while.

I have found a lot of the youth T'shirts uesed for screenprinting etc. tend to shink up after a few washes, so I usually buy a Medium 10-12 for my 5 year old. It fits a little big at first, but still looks cute, and he can then wear it for a few years.

I would buy a childs small (if the child is average size) or else a 6/6x should be equivelent for a girl, 6/7 for a boy.
I have a tendency to buy my kids' clothes a bit loose so they can wear something underneath if need be or else they can have it for a while.
May I ask if it is someone local making something special for you or if you seen something online....That sounds like a nice idea for the cruise!! I like it!! ::yes::

Hope this helps you out, enjoy!!

Unless the parents have informed you that their child is very small for their age I absolutely, positively would NOT buy anything smaller than a medium. I think that a child's small would be snug on many 5 - 6 year olds, and I expect it would be better if the shirt was a little big than too small.

Land's End and a few similar clothing companies sizes are true to the size charts, but most (in my experience) run very small. Again, I expect it would be extremely disappointing if they could not wear the shirt at all, or for just a very short period of time.

Now see, this is exactly why i didn't have kids--I"ll never figure out this size thing. LOL--seriously--thanks to all of you for your help. I have decided to get a 7/8 for him. Sort of a happy "medium"

Thanks again!

GoodFaerie, I'm doing that for our group too. Luckily I have all adults (except my DD, so I know what I need there).
I agree with kajohn, check to see if the tee's are pre-shrunk or if you should factor shrinkage in. Let us know how they work out. :wave2:
