Yes, you have to book through AAA. You can either do room only or a full package. I'm going in October for free dining with a AAA room and ticket discount. Although now that I just posted this...I think it may be possible to do a AAA room only discount over the phone through Disney res. Not 100% sure. I definitely booked my package through AAA though.
Yes, I have done that. The discounts have gone down, though. It used to be 15% at values, now it's only 10%. The most you can get is 20% at Deluxes. You do have to give your AAA number when you make the reservation, although if you want to find out if a discount room is available before you buy the membership, you can hold that ressie for either one or two days.
No, you're correct. I had a AAA package booked with room discount, which I gave up to add free dining when the promotion was announced. Perhaps the agent didn't specify that the room discount was no longer valid?
what if a better deal comes out from disney later? Like a gift card offer or a percent off a room? can we call AAA and get that deal later or are you stuck with what you have? Does AAA charge you to cancel a trip at all if you change your mind?
Is there a difference between booking through AAA and Disney? do you still get the magical express, and everything else?
We want to go from May 21-31 at French Quarter. Has anyone booked a moderate hotel to know how much you save during regular season?
My quote from AAA was about 1100 less but it was a deluxe villa with 20% off I'm actuall pretty happy with the discount of course I'll take more if it becomes available. I think mods is 10-15% off. It can still make a big difference if your there several nights.
You can get a AAA discount through Disney, you do not have to go through AAA. You might/do have to give your AAA member # that is located on your AAA card and that is all they require. We saved 10% on our room only reservation for May 2011.

That's for room only (and I've done that - I did have to give them my AAA number). If you want a package (tickets & dining), you have to go through AAA.
We just booked POFQ - moderate - AAA - Room ONLY, no package, through WDW reservations.
15% off our room rate and they did not ask for our AAA card #.
Just told me to bring it with me when we arrive at POFQ.
Our dates - June 26, 2011 to July 6, 2011
That inclues 3 nights at a higher rate for 4th of July holiday weekend.
Plus we had to also pay an extra $15/nigt for our DS age 19.
We saved about $400 on a 10 night stay, Standard Room Only rate at the POFQ
We own 10 day park hopper tickets already - so we did not go through the AAA membership travel desk.
We are paying for our food OOP - no DDP for us.
The price of DDP and OOP for us is either equal in price or less cost for our family.
Well, I am bummed. I just called Disney about a date in July (pre-cruise). The AAA rate at the Wilderness for that date is only 10% less. I need at least 20% to justify the price. Oh well, I will have to keep my eye out for pins or other discounts.
I called last night about a room only, and was able to get the AAA discount, but it was at a deluxe and it seemed like the discount was only 10%... Should it have been 20????
I think there isn't a standard discount for AAA. I just booked BLT for early April, but it falls within the mid-Feb to end of April Peak Season. I only got close to 5% for a Deluxe Villa. There were no AAA discounts on some categories of rooms (Theme Park View for ex) I'm used to getting much larger discounts on villas, but we often go during value season and have stayed at WLV and OKWV. AAA agent said some properties are newer or in more demand and don't get as big a discount and sometimes no discount. Less popular properties can sometimes get you a larger discount and the time of the year affects what percentage of discount you get. Peak season= very low percent discount.
