A WWYD ? Wisdom Teeth related....

Hi Honeypooh,

Did a *search* on wisdom teeth as my dd just had ALL FOUR (:() done this am and is miserable. She's now finally sleeping after being super dizzy and nauseous, likely from the oxycodone. DH even came home as she was really scaring me! :( I've been in touch with the oral surgeon who says that's normal but i'm thinking i'll have her analgesic changed.

Do you mind me asking you (or anyone!) what analgesic your office uses? Seems like there should be a better alternative, even Tylenol 3. DD said the dizzyness and nausea is worse than the pain.

Well, thanks for listening and any feedback you might have :)

Topping ~ just in case anyone would like to comment....?? TIA!

Hi!

We do Vicodin ES usually along with Amox for infection. Lots of people have a problem with the Vicodin so don't hesitate to call the doctor for something else if she's feeling sick. Sometimes we give tylenol #3 instead of the vicodin and with Advil in between it seems to help them. Are you making sure she eats something before the pills? I know it sounds silly but lots of times the problem with the vicodin is that the patient didn't feel like eating because of the pain and fear of the "holes" in their mouths but without the food in your belly the pain pills make you sick. Hope she feels better soon and if she doesn't feel better by tomorrow I would definitely call the surgeon about changing her meds.

I didn't look at the original date of this thread, so I deleted my comments. :)

When I had my wisdom teeth out and then went to Vegas 2 days later I had vicodan and Percodan I was out of my mind and I don't reccomend making plans to go anywhere that soon after having your wisdom teeth out. I don't remember being dizzy from the meds I just remember not being very nice and starving because I couldnt chew anything. I had all 4 of them out at once and none were impacted. This was years ago and I did smoke and never got dry sockets or an infection.

Dh is a dentist - first thing he would ask a patient who was having nausea with their pain meds is whether they have eaten anything. DO NOT take pain meds on an empty stomach. Also, if she has swallowed a lot of blood (sorry, tmi I know), then that could make her sick at her tummy too. Every person is different - if the nausea persists, I would ask the Dr. to switch her. But, she may find that she does ok with just Tylenol after a day or two. My dd did when she had all 4 taken out last year.

Try some soup & crackers, or a soft baked potato. Avoid carbonated beverages if you can - that is another contributor to dry sockets.

OP - sorry about your infection. Keep taking the antibiotics & follow your Dr's orders. I bet you are fine for your trip! :grouphug:

I was talking to my dentist(a TERRIFIC DDS) recently about this with regard to one of my DDs. He said that even during the past few years they've improved the procedure such that it isn't the nightmare it once was. Find yourself a really good oral surgeon and book the appointment. Good luck, and I hope you are feeling well throughout your trip. :)

Thank you HoneyPooh, i really appreciate your reply. She's doing a bit better now - thank you God! - and two advil seem to be working! I didn't want her to have all 4 out at once but everyone (incl. the dds) said it's best done all at once. Probably because no one would do it again after the first one!

I think that was it also, that she'd swallowed a lot of blood plus had only eaten a little applesauce and chicken broth. I really do know better, too!

Thanks for the tip about carbonation too rascalmom; is it ok if i stir it out? (hope that makes sense?)

Anyway, hopefully the worst is over and advil will keep working for her... i'll let you know!

Thank you all, so very much for your replies!

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth that all came out at once. THe only problem I had was that my jaw got dislocated and it took awhile to figure out that's what happened. I followed the rules to a T rinsed every few hours avoided pepper, used the eye dropper thing to clean the pits......As soon as I got them out though I noticed a huge difference in my overall health because sinus infections ended for the time being etc......I had another tooth that had to be removed thanks to the damage caused by the wisdom tooth and when that one came out two years ago the infections really ended.

I personally would not wait to long because it doesn't take long for other teeth/roots to become injured and cavity laden.

Flat soda should be okay - just don't use a straw.

Glad to hear she is doing better. Expect quite a bit of swelling for the next couple of days - that is normal & it should begin to go down after that.
