A Winter Escape to the Enchanted Forest-PTR January'13:Updated 1/19 Last Day Plans

For the past 4 years, I've been buying 4 to 5 ornaments from Hallmark each year to add to our tree. Naturally, the selection has had a *slight* Disney bias :lmao: Anyway, additions from this year arrived so I thought I'd share them!

That's a great tradition...:goodvibesI do something similar... I try to make sure we get ornaments of places we visited... I do intend to hit the Disney Christmas Store when we're there is less than a week...:yay:

For DD. She really wants to meet Merida during our next trip.

Heck I want to meet Merida myself...:rotfl:

All I'm missing now is a white v-neck sweater and a dickie to enjoy the eggnog. :lmao:

You make it sound like one of those retro Christmas specials they used to do... Andy Williams, etc..., :rotfl:

My work finally upgraded our ancient Blackberries to iphone 4S - so I ordered a new iphone case which arrived in the mail today! Needless to say, it has a Disney flavor to it.

With DW working all weekend, I took the kids to Baltimore today and the kids had a great time. First, I bought tickets to the Breakfast with Santa at the B & O Railroad Museum. This event turned to be a very well organized one. The museum is what used to be a roundhouse and they have a decent number of trains and cars exhibited inside. The tables were set up in the middle of the museum and there were miniature train exhibits also set up in holiday themes. About 30 minutes into the event, Santa and Mrs. Claus made their way out to visit the tables. Then Santa headed over to his meet and greet spot which was a sleigh. My Disney skills really came in handy when I sensed that Santa was starting to make his way to his spot, I quickly guided my kids to the spot as well and we were second in line! There was also an indoor carousel. Finally, the event was capped off with a 20 minute train ride and Santa visited everyone walking up and down the aisles.

Afterwards, I took the kids over to the National Aquarium. We usually visit it 3-4 times a year. DD6 and DS3 spent a lot of time at the exhibits. We also had tickets to the Polar Express 4D Experience which was a big hit - although DD had a near-panic-attack moment when her seat "poked" her and I had to reassure her. For lunch, walked over to the Cheesecake Factory along the Inner Harbor. Then drove back home and watched the movie Elf! Pictures from the breakfast event.

With work being so hectic lately, I kind of lost track of the countdown until the past couple of days. Plus I have so many deadlines before our trip and with the Holidays coming up it still feels a 100 days away rather then 53. But I'm starting to get more excited, and I think once I pay off the trip by D minus 45, it'll feel more real!

How did I miss this until now? I loved your last report!! I'm in!

Welcome! And thanks for the kind words for my last report.:goodvibes I've been enjoying your TR as well! Hoping that we'll as magical a trip as last time even if it's half the duration - a Disney trip is still a Disney trip!

Sounds like such a fun day! And I love how they had Santa out of his normal suit and in overalls....so fun!

Yup, I thought that was cute too. Sort of reminds me of how Mickey and gang have different outfits for different occasions. The overalls would definitely be more conducive to riding a train compared to his sleigh outfit! :lmao:

I love the look of that roundhouse... It reminds me of the Roundhouse we had when DS was still playing with Thomas...

We are all big toy train fans in our family so that whole outing looks like great fun... I also like Santa's "working on the railroad look...":thumbsup2

Hmmm... the National Aquarium... haven't been there in a bit... need to get back there... (that's one of the good things about living in the New York-DC corridor... we get lots of good day trips...) :cool1:

:cool1:

Completely agree with you about living in along DC-NYC corridor! Feel so lucky to have so many interesting places to visit that are within a two hour drive. Even NYC is only 4 hours away.

Paid off our Disney package a couple of days ago! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Love this feeling!! :cool1: It always makes the trip seem super-close!!

Loved your Santa breakfast photos! Too funny...I just did a Santa breakfast update in my PTR too! Of course, ours was in DS's school cafeteria, so it wasn't quite as cool! :rotfl2:

Loving your PTR!

Thanks!

Meet with Santa is cool regardless the locale :thumbsup2 ...especially for the kids!

We had never been to National Harbor located right outside the southern portion of the beltway on the Potomac river. Yesterday, we decided to try it out mainly because the Gaylord Hotel there puts together an ice sculpture show each year during the holiday season. Thought it would be something the kids would enjoy plus I heard the decorations in the hotel's atrium was pretty good as well. So I purchased a one night package at the hotel which included tickets to "ICE" which was themed as "Shrek the Halls". They set up a temporary indoor facility on one of the parking lots and keep the exhibit at a temperature of 9 degrees F! They hire ice sculptors from China each year. e did have to stand in line for about 15 minutes total before entering the exhibit. All that time I was wondering where my Fastpasses were ;) At the entrance of the exhibit, they hand out parkas with hoods for everyone, and believe me, you need it! The temperatures reminded me of my college days in Minnesota. There are also warnings posted everywhere not to touch, climb or LICK the exhibit. The scene from Dumb and Dumber immediately popped into my head when I read that particular warning. Here are some pics. I didn't bring my DSLR in with me to the ICE exhibit - didn't want to test the operating temperature of my camera so brought in the old point and shoot. Everything you see is made of ice!

We thought it was very well done. DD started getting a little cranky near the end though because she was getting cold. DS on the other hand didn't want to leave! The highlight for the kids was the ice slides. DS3 came down very slowly mostly because he couldn't figure out how to lift his legs up to get the glide going but he still had a blast!

Some of the ice slides.

At the end of the exhibit, they had an ice sculpture version of the Nativity scene.

The details in the sculptures and the ice structures were absolutely amazing.

Afterwards, we went back to the hotel atrium where they had Gingy's house set up so that families can purchase gingerbread men decorating kits to work on and get a photo-op with Gingy himself.

The Christmas decorations are pretty darn good inside the atrium.

After the kids went to bed, I roamed around some more in the retail and dining district of the National Harbor.

The view of the hotel's atrium from the outside.

They had dozens of lighted trees along the hotel's parking lot!

Love the ICE exhibit! They have that in Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, too. We had talked about going to see it this year, but didn't get it planned! We may have to check it out next year! :thumbsup2

It was fun and our kids really liked it. I think the Shrek theming definitely makes it more kid friendly.

I had seen an advertisement for the Gaylord National Harbor... decorations/Ice Show last year in the paper... I had wondered what it would look like... It looks very well done...I love the colored ice... The theme changes every year I believe? (There is something oddly ironic-yet cute about Gingy having a gingerbread shop as he himself is not planning on ever being eaten... cute photo op idea though... I'm a big Shrek fan... I was really surprised at how funny/clever they are... (although I'm not sure they can or should stretch another sequel out... I did see Shrek the Halls on tv with DS and it was cute)

Is there enough to keep you busy in the hotel or could you incorporate an overnight stay with a bit of DC or Alexandria or perhaps Mt. Vernon as well (wheels are spinning for next year's plans...:goodvibes):scratchin

Are you getting psyched for your Dis trip or are the holidays taking your mind off of it?

You're right, now that you mention it, that there is a bit of irony that he's hosting an event where gingerbread men are being decorated and EATEN :lmao: In addition to Gingy, there were also Shrek and Puss in Boots meet and greets available.

I think if you make a visit during the holidays, you may have enough things at the hotel and the Harbor to do to keep you occupied for a one night stay although things are primarily geared towards younger children. There is a Sunday brunch with Santa event hosted by the hotel that requires very early reservations. The Harbor also has water taxi services to Old Town Alexandria or even to DC (I think the drop off is near the Lincoln Memorial). Also, they are opening a new Children's Museum next weekend at this location. If you're visiting DC, I probably wouldn't recommend staying at this hotel for the entire duration but maybe a night or so. With the same amount of money, you could find hotels that are a lot closer to the DC attractions.

I think the Holidays are definitely keeping me distracted from our upcoming trip to Disney! :goodvibes Even though I'm only 46 days away from our trip, it doesn't feel real yet.

Wow. The days have been flying by with Christmas/New Year's coming up!
So I clearly have a lot of catching up to do with my PTR.

First thing's first. Our Mickey Mail came a couple of days ago! Been so busy with everything, I even forgot to keep an eye out for Mickey Mail, so it was a pleasant surprise. Seeing that our luggage tags are exactly the same from our last trip gave me a moment of clarity - hmmmm, maybe we're going back too soon. Oh, who am I kidding! Not soon enough! :lmao:

I've been using My Disney Experience app whenever I remember, to look at the wait times and FP return times for the new attractions at New FL and for Test Track. I think I have a pretty good touring plan set now which I'll start posting after Christmas!

My parents have been visiting with us for the past two weeks from overseas and will be with us through Christmas. During that time, we had two theater outings. First, we took DD6 to A Christmas Carol at the Ford's Theatre. DW and I enjoyed it. Got mixed reviews from DD who got a little spooked by the ghost of Marley and had an emotional (crying) response to the scene where Scrooge finds his grave with the help of Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. She wasn't the only one though. Heard a couple of other kids her age in the audience that really got upset by Marley and Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. DD still enjoyed getting dressed up and having an evening outing with her parents. DS in the mean time got to spend some quality time with his grandparents. :thumbsup2 It was a festive way to welcome in the Christmas season. After the show, some of the cast members waited by the exit collecting donations for the local shelter in their full costumes. We gave DD some bills to put in one of their hats and she enjoyed that experience and interaction with the cast member quite a bit!

A couple of days ago, DW and I got a rare date night and went to see Les Miserables which is currently touring at the National Theatre. We hadn't planned on seeing it this time around since we saw the same 25th anniversary production last year at the Kennedy Center. But, after treating my parents to a showing last week, I couldn't resist any longer and bought tickets just last week and to my surprise somehow scored first row center seats right behind the conductor! By far, our favorite musical that stands the test of time pretty well. This was the best cast I had seen since Broadway and the best Marius we've ever seen. DW and I loved all of the performances.

The atmosphere was awesome too. Seated to our left, a woman in her mid twenties who was seeing the show for the 43rd time and this was her 7th showing just in the past couple of weeks!! One of the orchestra members looked up from the pit before the show started and recognized her. ;) Then to my right was a man in his late forties(?) with his wife. Well, he didn't have the typical emotional filters of an average theater goer. Maybe it was the drinks he had sipped but he actually gave a fist pump in the air with a "YES!" at the end of Javert's "Stars" :lmao: And at another point in the show, (when Javert finds Val Jean), he said out loud "S***!". Part of me appreciated his honest reactions and the other part of me strained very hard not to laugh out loud.

Finally, during the intermission, I had noticed a couple of the musicians straining to find someone in the audience. I first thought they were looking for one of their friends or something. Didn't think much of it. When the show was over, as we were exiting the theater, we saw a long motorcade parked out front waiting. DW thought there must have been a VIP in the audience or something. The next day, I found out from Les Mis' Facebook page, that the Veep himself, Joe Biden was in the audience! That's how I roll - hobnobbing with DC's power players :rotfl:

Anyway, those are the highlights for the past two weeks! We'll be hosting Christmas for my side of the family and will head up to NYC to my brother's for New Years.

I hope all of my DIS friends have a wonderful Holiday season! Next week, I'll start posting my day to day itinerary and touring plans. The trip is starting to feel very very close now with only 34 days to go!!!
