A Winter Escape to the Enchanted Forest-Jan'13 TR:**5/21 Parting Thoughts/New PTR!

Darn, no BOG availability! I'm in the same boat. I have an ADR for the day after we leave! We changed our travel plans and now I can't get another reservation. I would extend our trip just to dine at BOG again but that is a little obsessive... not to mention something I'm sure my DH wouldn't agree is necessary.

As for your other ADRs - I'm a HUGE fan of Kona breakfast and I love Jiko! I've never been to Flying Fish but I would love to try it sometime.

Your back up plan for California Grill sounds good!

Isn't that crazy how hard it is to get a BOG ADR? If I can't find an ADR then I'll try to experience it for lunch since we didn't get a chance to try it during our last trip.

Every time I picture Tonga Toast in my head, I start drooling!

I agree that I need to make the most of this opportunity! It doesn't happen very often for my conferences to be in Orlando/Disney. The conference itself is taking place at the Convention Center but they're suppose to have shuttle service. This is seriously going to test my tolerance of leaving the Disney Cocoon

At this point, I'm not very optimistic that we'll be able to get an ADR for our family trip in January even if it's a slower month. We shall see.

I forgot to mention in my update how DS refused to wear one of the two t-shirts I bought for him. It was a Donald Duck t-shirt. Not sure why we was so set against it especially since Donald is now his favorite character from the Disney Jr Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show.

BTW, have you and Paxton seen the episode where Donald has the whole clubhouse to himself and they play the show's theme song reworded for Donald? "D-O-N-A-L-D~ D-U-C-K-Duck~ It's the Donald Duck Clubhouse!"

Tuesday January 29th - 11:45am

Once we finished BTMRR, I texted DW and they were waiting for us in front of Pirates of the Caribbean. DD had nooooo interest in going on this one. Is there a word for unreasonable fear of fictional pirates? Sparrowphobia? Anyway, DS wanted to go, so DW, DFIL, and DS went in while I waited outside with DD. We found a shade which is hard to come by in this part of Adventureland and DD just plopped herself down declaring that she will not be moving away from this particular spot.

This pirate was checking on us the whole time.

About 15 minutes later, they emerged and DS seemed to be in good spirits. We walked over next door to Peco Bills for lunch for all of us except DS. I found a nice big round table in the corner with a giant window looking out to the patio portion of the restaurant and set up shop there with DD and DS while the other two adults went to order the food and use up our remaining quick service credits. We decided not to try for Be Our Guest on this trip. The lines were ridiculously long and I think the kids would have liked spending the same amount of times going on rides than waiting in line. As much as I wanted to check out the dining area, thought it would be best to do that for our next trip.

While we were waiting for DW and DFIL to return with the food, DS suddenly gets up from his seat and tells me that he has to “throw up” again. My mind went “Yiiiiiiiikes, not in a restaurant!” Before the last words came out of his mouth, I scooped him up, started jogging towards the restrooms while looking back at DD and telling her to stay right there and I’ll be back. I hurried over into an open stall. Turned out to be a false alarm. He felt better once we were just standing in the bathroom so we walked backed to our table. 5 minutes later, same drill. Same false alarm. Poor kid. He must have been feeling nauseous. He eventually fell asleep in his stroller while the rest of us tried to eat our lunch after some meticulous hand washing and Purell!

I had been so focused on DS during the lunch, I hadn’t noticed what DD was up to while eating her hamburger until I looked up and saw that she had turned around from her seat facing the window and laughing and giggling with a couple in the patio on the other side of the window, mostly through miming and improvisational sign language. They saw me and waved. I laughed and waved back. When I asked DD what they were “talking” about, she said they were telling her that their son was asleep in the stroller, just like her brother in the stroller. Cute.

As we finished our meals, and I decided I didn’t want to look at another quick service chocolate or carrot cake for at least a year, DD popped off her chair and walked over to the next table where a large family whose kids were having a good time and bursting out an impromptu rendition of “We are the champions”. She interrupted them and was telling them something, but none of us could hear what she was telling them until one of the moms came over and started telling the kids to quiet down just a bit. Apparently, DD was asking them to be quiet because her brother was not feeling well and was taking a nap. We laughed and told the other family that it was okay and DD was just being a sweet over-protective sister right now. Then DD started trading “war stories” about BTMRR with a couple of the other kids. I just love these types of interactions we get to have at Disney.

I asked if DW wanted to go on BTMRR with DD this time. She really didn’t want to. Based on her experience with EE, she didn’t want to get another headache especially since DS wasn’t doing so well. So DD, DFIL, and myself went back to BTMRR while DW took DS down by Crystal Palace to look for the first aid station and see if she could score a bottle of Tylenol as DS was now starting to get a fever. In some ways, it was good that he didn’t get sick until his last day since he got to fully enjoy the trip. On the other hand, without a hotel room to go back to, we didn’t have a home base for him to rest up so he ended up spending his sick day outside. I guess there are worse places to spend your sick day than in MK. The CMs gave DW a sick kit that included some pull up diapers and liquid Tylenol. Once he got his medicine, DW took him into the stores along Main Street to get themselves out of the sun.

DD in the meantime was having a blast riding BTMRR two more times. Once with me. Once with DFIL and the other with me.

I’m pretty sure this made her completely forget about Barnstormer being closed. Each time she came out of the exit, she was skipping and hopping along and couldn’t stop talking about how fun the ride was. When I asked her which one she liked better, Barnstormer or BTMRR, she said Barnstormer was “fun”, but BTMRR was “fun fun”. I guess she now has a rating system for rides now. Two funs are clearly better than one fun.

Yes that is a great one! Paxton loves when they run through the opening scene again and they call Donald's name 5 times and he runs to all the different positions. He has gotten so obsessed with MMCH lately that he asks for certain episodes. That is one in particular he likes.

Okay, that is just too sweet how DD told the other family to quiet down for her sleeping brother. What a great big sister! Gotta agree, you can't beat those random and funny interactions with other guests at Disney World.

Ooh, I had forgotten that y'all had already checked out of your hotel!! Those days of being "homeless" are always a little tough even without illness thrown in. I hope after a little medicine DS started feeling better. Tylenol is one thing I never thought to carry in my park bag, but I will have to remember that for next time, although it is good to know that you can get it at First Aid. I don't know if I would have thought of that!

That's my favorite part too! I was laughing a lot louder than my kids were when Donald did the roll call all by himself! I've been watching way too much Disney Jr lately. I found myself singing Doc Mcstuffin songs to my toddler and preschool patients lately when I'm examining them. "Time for your check up~ Time for your check up~". The look of confusion and amusement on their faces are priceless.

We did pack tylenol for the trip but the bottle was in our suitcase in the car parked at TTC.

A little side story about traveling and trying to be prepared for the kids getting sick. When DD was 1, we took a trip to visit my brother in NYC which was our first major family long distance trip. Of course, a day into our visit she got sick and developed fevers and cough that worsened into what appeared to be increased rate of breathing. Us both being pediatricians, we reeeeeally wanted to take a look in her ears and listen to her lungs but we didn't pack anything to help us out with that. We didn't even have tylenol/motrin for the fevers. We ended up putting our ears up against her chest and heard some lower airway wheezes and went to a local pharmacy where they were very helpful and understanding (yes even in NYC! ) and once DW provided them with her credentials they gave us albuterol and steroids. DD felt a whole lot better and fortunately we averted a trip to an urgent care or emergency room. Ever since that "traumatic" experience, we have always packed a stethoscope, an otoscope, tylenol AND motrin for every trip we have taken!

That's brilliant!!! Never thought to bring my stethoscope either, but now I will have to remember that! No otoscope, but that would definitely be helpful too. That's great that they gave you the prescriptions. Nothing worse than an ER visit, except maybe the bill!!

I agree - it's a sad feeling when I'm nearing the end of my TR. Which is why I usually start up a PTR as soon as a TR is completed!

Hi Dave! Sorry your DS felt so poorly - good move with the "sick kid pack" at the first aid station. That's good information for any parent. (Being a non-clinician I can't say that I would know medical terminology beyond emesis and febrile which I spy in your poor DS.)

Your DD is quite the adorable character. That's good that she is protective of her little brother. Sounds like she has some assertiveness in her by speaking up with the next table.

She's definitely not shy around other kids and in many cases other adults. She's also very interested in making new friends with perfect strangers by striking up a conversation. Once I took the kids to Panera for lunch and as we were waiting for our food she spied a couple of girls her age with their mom eating at one of the booths. For the rest of our meal, all I heard from her was "Can we go sit and eat with those girls?" I did finally let her go say hi to them on our way out.

I'm always astonished how assertive and engaging she is with people since I was the complete opposite when I was a child. She just participated in her first ballet show and had absolutely no stage fright. I remember how terrified I was standing on a stage as a kid.

I would also like to complement your DD on her rating system. If Barnstormer is fun and BTMRR is fun fun, I guess that makes Rock'n Rollercoaster fun fun fun. I guess we'll have to wait a while to get that official rating from her though.

The next step in my master plan to get her to become a thrill ride junkie is to get her to go on Expedition Everest and Tower of Terror in January. I'm hoping I'll get the fun fun fun rating from her. RnRC will of course be the Mount Everest of Disney thrill rides, wait that's a little confusing since there's a ride called Expedition....oh never mind.
