Disney Day 9: Sunday, 8-Jun-2003
The Storm Troopers were once again on guard at the park entrance. As on our first day that the Studios, we headed for Sunset Boulevard at park opening. Once again the Tower of Terror already had a 30+ minute line, so we pulled FastPasses for the Tower and went to ride the Rock n Roller Coaster. The line was very short, and this is our favorite ride, so we rode twice. By this time, our Tower of Terror FastPass time had arrived, so we were able to get a FastPass to ride the RnR again later. Disneys presentation of the Tower of Terror theme and story is almost as good as the drop part of the ride, but the kids prefer to spend any extra ride time at the Rock n Roller Coaster after one ride on the Tower of Terror.
We all enjoyed Who Wants to be a Millionaire, so that was our next direction. When we got to the FastPass machines, there was a CM announcing that the current show was All FastPass, and there were plenty of seats available. During Star Wars Weekends, two of the shows each day were Star Wars versions, and this was one of those shows. We had underestimated Disney when we assumed that the meaning of a Star Wars Version was that it had Star Wars questions. It did have Star Wars questions, but it was also an extra long version, with an opening comedy sketch involving 2 jawas, and then a visit from Jeremy Bulloch and Peter Mayhew. They were interesting and witty, and we thoroughly enjoyed this show.
This makes the second trip in a row that we have slipped up and left the Animation Tour until the animators have all gone home. It is still interesting, although the guide moves you through really quickly. The animators presentation was about the new feature Brother Bear, which is scheduled for release this fall. It was interesting, and he was very good at the presentation.
One Man's Dream is an exhibit and movie about Walt and his plans and hopes. It is almost a museum, with photos, clippings, artifacts, and models. We especially enjoyed the pre-construction drawings and models. This exhibit is definitely worth a look!
We then took a break for a fast food lunch at the ABC Commissary. The Cuban sandwich w/plantain chips was very good. On the way to lunch, we saw that The Great Movie Ride had reopened on schedule. We were pleased that we didnt have to miss this excellent attraction.
We have enjoyed Drew Careys shows, and we were looking forward to Sounds Dangerous. It was a disappointment. The old Monster Sound Show was no E-ticket, but it was at least interesting to learn something about how sound effects are done.
We then went to see MuppetVision 4D again, this time from the middle of the theatre. I love this show!
After MuppetVision, we decided it was time to use our FastPasses for the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. The line was only 5 minutes, so we saved our FastPasses. After riding once, the line was still only 15 minutes, so we rode again. Then the line was up to 35 minutes, so we used our FastPasses. After our 5th ride of the day, we pulled FastPasses for later, and headed to the Beauty and the Beast show. This is a very elaborate and well done show, but the venue not as intimate as that of the Lion King Show in the Animal Kingdom. In the Lion King show, we felt like we were right in the middle of the action, while at Beauty and the Beast, it felt like the action was happening down on the stage.
After Beauty and the Beast, we went to find a spot for the parade. Once we were settled in, I went to the ice cream cart to purchase a cold snack. While we were waiting for the parade, my son kept coughing because someone was smoking nearby. I would have asked them to stop, but I never spotted who it was. The only time I complain about smokers is when I cant just avoid them, (like waiting for a parade or show, or waiting in a queue.)
After the parade, we went to ride the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster one more time with our FastPasses. When we arrived, the CM at the FastPass line was encouraging people to go through the standby line, as the wait was only 15 minutes. (Im not sure why they would care, and it seems like it would be better if people went ahead and used the FastPasses.) We rode in the standby line, and then the line was up to 25 minutes, so we used our FastPasses to ride one more time. That made 7 times in one day! Cool!
We then headed to Epcot, for dinner and IllumNations. Dinner was at Akershus, which was the only table service restaurant we visited twice on this trip. (We also ate twice at the Pepper Market at CSR.) For Illuminations, we sat in almost the same location as the night before, except on the Mexico side instead of the Canada side. This was a very good decision, because the other side breathed a lot of ground level smoke that night, while our location saw almost none. Before the show, we were talking to the families around us, and the gentleman next to us told my son (the one that wants his own flame barge,) that the flame barge holds 1000 pounds (455kg) of propane, and that if it wasnt all consumed in the show that they would burn it at 10:30PM. We went out to the boardwalk at the Yacht Club at 10:30, and found that the gentleman was correct. The excess propane burn off was significantly larger than the burns during the show. My son was quite impressed. (OK, me too!)
