The other day when I walked into work there was a soldier standing at the counter looking at the menu. I asked him which branch he was with and he told me he was Army.
There are many branches with different types of uniforms and I can’t identify them all.
I unzipped my jacket to show him my ‘unauthorized’ Air Force sweatshirt that was my son’s when he was in basic training. I’m allowed to wear it at long as I keep my jacket zipped up.

My yellow ribbon is proudly displayed on my hat.

He was placing a rather large order to be delivered Saturday for a Christmas party for the recruits that are leaving for basic training. Even though I am only driver, the computer knows that and hates me for it; I took the order and gave him as many discounts as I could.

Later that day, my boss didn’t know what to do with me when I started talking a mile a minute about the Army’s upcoming Christmas party. I was following around behind poking him in the ribs saying “Discounts, discounts, discounts.”

My boss is the greatest. He discounted it even more. A lot more.

And not just because I was hounding him, he’s just very generous that way.

Even though I am a bit of a pest when I want something.

So today was the big day, I had made several dozen Christmas cookies to take over for the Army party, the kind you take from the package and put on a cookie sheet.

I am not much of a cook and didn’t want to be responsible for making the Army sick.

It could be a treasonous act.

It took three drivers with two Chevy Blazers and a car to get all the food to the Army Recruiting Center.

They were a hungry group.

When the other two drivers and I arrived at the Army Recruiting Center, we backed our vehicles up to the door and started to unload the ¼ ton of food.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a large group of soldiers were standing next to us, ready to help us unload the ¼ ton of food.

They were not only a hungry group, they camouflage very well.

They DO have special training for that.

We started a food parade into the Army Recruiting Center when an even larger group of young men were waiting to be fed.

I was very proud to be part of that parade.

When we finished unloading all the food, I looked around and didn’t see the Christmas cookies. I told one of the soldiers I would be right back with the cookies.

“There are Christmas cookies too?” He said and before I could get to the door the young soldier was standing in front of me with the basket of cookies, grinning ear-to-ear.

The Army has mastered camouflage AND speed.

The look on his face felt really good. My 55,000 friends need to know that.

When the other two drivers and I were walking out the door, many soldiers shook our hands and thanked us. edited to add* Can you imagine, they were thanking us?!? One stopped us and asked us if we were ready to join the Army. I looked at him and without thinking said “My son is in the Air force, I did my part, I gave birth.” And I winked at him.

The Army could be working on that now, where they have mastered so many other skills.

I glanced back over my shoulder at the faces of the young men and women, getting into line with their plates to get their food and begin their Christmas celebration, before they are shipped out to basic training to fight and defend our country.

They looked so happy, smiling and joking with their friends.

Mostly they looked so brave.

Brave like my boy.

I am so unbelievably proud to be an American and feel so honored to have been a part of that party.

I had a good day today.

Okay, I'm all teary now. I'm proud of you for helping with this party. Baking cookies, delivering food and shaking hands, I'm proud to know you, sweetie.

I'm proud to be an American too!

That was a very nice post Robin. You are a kind person. I know that warm feeling you get inside when you feel proud for your country and the people who serve. I'm the wife of a former Marine :teeth: (once a Marine, always a Marine he says).

I hope your son and the thousands of others that are serving stay safe.

They are always in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the honor of riding Splash Mountain the day after Thanksgiving with a gentleman who was being shipped out a few days later. He was very nice and polite. I was honored to share his last ride of the night with him. As we departed, I thnked him for all he was doing and wished him luck.

I too felt proud and thank all the men and woman who are protecting us.

delswife,
When I say the following, I mean it with all my heart, and my soul, and my might:

Love ya, mean it!!

Now I have to go find some kleenex and blow my nose and wipe my eyes.....

God Bless America and our brave men and women in the military.

Tears.... I'm in tears!!!

I've loved all your stories so far but this one by far takes the cake!

Great job!

And a HUGE Thank You to all our soliders serving our country!

Awesome story!! I often pray for all our brave troops all over the world and here at home. May God watch over each and every one.

OK here come the tears, as a PAM (Proud Army Mom) I just want to says thanks!!

Proud to be American

Proud of our Troops

Proud to be one of delswife's 55,000 friends

Great story. It should have made you feel a little closer to your son at this time too.

Oh Robin, how awsome! I do a lot of volunteer work for the Army National Guard here in Maine. You and I should put our heads together, we would make a great team! Besides all the new recruits leaving, we have over 600 soldiers leaving the state soon to be shipped all overseas. This is just National Guard, not including all the regular services. Something to think about! ;)

That brought tears to my eyes and cold chill bumps on my body. Thanks for sharing your story. I too am proud of our men and women willing to serve for us all. My brother is in the Air Force and has been home for a few months and in fact I just saw him today. Thanks again for posting and helping to remind us that we still need to keep them all in our prayers.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm sure there are hundreds of other stories just like that happening around the country right now. Here locally a local tourist bus company is bringing home a company of men that will be shipped out after the first of the year so that they can be home for Christmas. the company was given an unexpected leave at Christmas with the stipulation that they had to get themselves home. It's good to know that goodness still exists in this country even if the media doesn't want to tell us about it.
Merry Christmas

Thanks so much for sharing that.
As a military wife that was especially meaningful to me.

What stood out to me in your story was the fact that this was a large group of new RECRUITS heading for basic training--these are people who are brave enough even in such a time as this to sign up to go and serve! May God bless all of them---and you too, Robin! :)
