Tonight, as a friend of ours was walking out our front door after a visit, she noticed a cat laying in the middle of the road in front of our house. We recognized it as the cat belonging to the neighbors across the street. We approached the cat and realized she had been hit by a car. It must have just happened because our friend was only over the house for a few minutes and the cat wasn't there when she arrived. I ran into the house to get a towel to wrap the cat, my friend went and tried to find the owners, and my husband called the emergency vet clinic. The owners weren't home, so not knowing what to do we left our cell phone number for the neighbors to call us when they got home, and drove the cat, wrapped in the towel and cradled in my arms, to the emergency vet clinic. It was about a 20 minutes drive, but the cat died on the way. When we got there the vet confirmed that the cat had died, and while we were trying to figure out what to do with the cat our neighbors called and we told them what happened. They asked that we bring the cat back home to them. The vets were very nice and wrapped the cat up in a little bundle. We drove back and handed the cat to them, and there were many tears.

I had a feeling the cat wouldn't be able to be saved. I take a little comfort in the fact she died in my arms and not alone on the street.

I'm trying to process it all, so I thought sharing it here would help.

Ohhh -- giving comfort to that poor kitty and trying to get it to the vet's were exactly the right things to do (I hate to think how many people would have just figured an injured cat was none of their business) but I can totally see how upsetting this must have been. :grouphug:

That happend to me once, awful feeling. You did all that you could. But it is sad....

Your compassionate care for the beloved cat during those final minutes will stay with your neighbors forever.

Would that all neighbors were as caring as you and your husband.

I'm SO very sorry you had to experience that...but at the same time, I'm happy the poor little cat, was not alone, but safe in your arms.

That's terrible. You did the right thing in trying to help and offering some comfort when the cat really needed it. I'm sure your neighbors appreciate that.

Oh how sad! But you are such a good neighbor....many people would not have done what you did!

Sorry to hear about this.
Glad you were there for the kitty.
I'm sure this made it MUCH better than your
neighbors coming home and seeing him/her in the
middle of the road. That's not the last memory they
would have liked to have had in their heads.

Wonderful neighbors!

wow- that is such a sad story. :guilty:

Thank you for trying to help that poor cat.

Oh my gosh...how awful. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that.
Thank you for being there for that poor kitty.
I know that if it had been one of my kitties, I would have been very thankful to have someone like you.

What a wonderful thing that you have done:hug:
Trying to do all you could to help the injured cat - the cat must have been so scared but when you held it for its finally moments I am sure the cat felt your compassion and went feeling safe and at peace - God bless you:hug:
