Alligator kills Florida woman

FORT MYERS, FLA. -- A woman died Friday after being mauled by a 12-foot alligator that dragged her into a pond and nearly tore off one of her arms.
Janie Melsek, 54, was attacked Wednesday by the alligator as she worked on landscaping behind a home on Sanibel Island, just off the Florida coast in the Gulf of Mexico.
Melsek was standing in a pond and trimming a tree when the reptile attacked. After the animal pulled her into the water, a neighbor and police officers engaged in a fierce tug-of-war to pull her from its jaws.
Police shot the 457-pound alligator in the head after Melsek was freed. It required six men to lift the carcass to shore.
The alligator's remains were being sent to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Talahassee, the capital, for veterinarians to perform a necropsy.
Since 1973, there have been 13 deadly alligator attacks in Florida.
