having lost weight, i tend to forget sometimes that discrimination/humiliation of those with "ample proportions" is the only acceptable form of discrimination left, then something like this reminds me. i've been in that poor person's shoes, and although i don't recall ever "draping" myself over a shopping cart, i know all too well how your look of disdain made her feel...each time it happens, it crushes your spirit just a little more, until there's nothing left. merry christmas.

there are a lot of overweight men and women who stand up straight and carry themselves well. this is not a post about overweight women. believe me, after being immobile from rotator cuff surgery, i can stand to loose more than a few pounds. its about posture. i haven't noticed any thin people draped over carts. obviously it is totally understandable why an elderly person or a pregnant woman would use the cart in the manner. this post was not in reference to them.

Maybe because they can't walk any other way? Maybe because they have a medical problem (back, hips, sciatica, etc) that makes that the most comfortable way to walk. :confused3 I guess they should be more concerned with being as attractive as they can to you, than their own comfort.

that would certainly apply to a few but it doesn't account for the women i see, week after week, from the parking lot, through the store and back out the door. this "affliction" seems to only affect them going up and down the aisles. i never see men doing it and certainly most of the men i see at the grocery store are old enough to be retired. surely they would suffer from similar maladies. :confused3

Quite possibly not. I'm sure your dh would know, but I know a lot of women get sciatica with pregnancy, so maybe more women have it than men? And back problems, too, I'm guessing that herniated discs are common among women with big (and loose from child birth) bellies.

Maybe they're just tired.

Maybe they are tired. Maybe they have an invisible health problem that we don't know about. Maybe they were up most of the night with a sick child. Maybe they really don't like shopping and it's the only way they can motivate themselves to get through the store. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

Maybe they don't like the way I can be in a little too much of a hurry. Maybe they don't like the way my son can get whiny if he's shopping with me and doesn't get his way. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

The street goes both directions. Or the aisle goes both directions. And I'm as snarky as the next person and would maybe notice something like that (I haven't, BTW), but I'm not going to give it a second thought once I'm out of the store. And trust me, I have plenty of grocery store annoyances. :)

I do have sciatica pain and when it's flaring it's no fun. I don't lean on the cart, but I do like having it there for backup. It helps having it there to hold onto.

I just drape myself over the cart to get a good hold on it as I go careening down the aisles. Those carts don't corner very well, you know.

You mean I'm not supposed to hold onto the cart for dear life? :rotfl: Oops...

Me too, but people draping over carts is NOT one of them. Why should that bother me? :confused3 Now if this same lady keeps pushing her cart into my heels, then we have a problem.

I have an idea. You should try this. Make eye contact. Smile. Say hello.

They will miraculously become human to you and you may realise that this is not something you should be worrying about.

Good luck, let us know how it works out.

I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to. But was it really necessary to cuss me out in front of everyone, yelling at the top of your lungs? I have yet to go back into that store. :sad2:

:rotfl2:

I walk like this all the time when I get groceries. Im a 19 year old guy with a BMI of 23.

I once worked with a lady who refused to shop in anyplace that did not have a cart. She used it as a walker.

All I care about is the people getting out of my way so I can get what I need! I once had a lady stand in front of the pies doing absolutely nothing. I would move in to grab what I needed and she would just move closer to where I was. Weird! DH was with me and he thought so too.

Well, I guess they could use an electric cart. But I'm sure that would incite a whole new thread. ;)

linda, i do all of the time. i am about the friendliest person that you could possibly run in to. i can't tell you how many times someone barely grunts back at me and that is the truth.

Amusing thread to say the least. :goodvibes I personally could care less how other people walk with their carts as long as they get out of my way when I need to get to something. LOL The only thing I notice in a grocery store is when the carts dont roll right or get stuck on something on the floor. Oh that and the free samples, takes the edge off of shopping hungry, those I definately notice. :rotfl:

OT...speaking of grocery stores, I had the WIERDEST conversation with a lady today. I had time to kill while waiting for the lesser half to come back from taking our DD Xmas shopping for me (he dropped me off to buy meat while he went to the dollar store with her) Looking at holiday items when this lady HAD to show me the cute plate on the shelf LOL I mentioned my DD would like it and that started off a 10 minute conversation on childbirth(detailed) of then vs. now (how her grandmother and cousin, and whoever :confused3 had passed while giving birth) which turned into an other convo on transplants. :confused3 Sigh...nice lady dont get me wrong but absolutely the STRANGEST interaction I have ever had in a food store. :lmao:

That said I am going to go make 8 pounds of the world's easiest fudge (see Christmas treat thread for recipe) and cause other ppl to be weight challenged since I am giving them out as gifts this week. Please dont look at my bubble butt as I leave the room, it makes me very self concious.. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

But apparently you missed the most important part of my post.....the part where you realise its not something you should be worrying about!

Maybe your next post should be about "those fat people who only grunt at you when you say hello! :rotfl2:

I have to do this when I grocery shop now or really shop anywhere. I never did this before but being almost 8 months pregnant - I really need that crutch....and if I don't do the shopping, it ain't getting done. ;)

I'm guessing all the ample weight the obese women are carrying must be even worse than what I am carrying right now.

I can remember doing this late in my pregnancy as well. It gives me a back ache to think about doing it now. I tend to pull the cart along behind me rather than push it anyhow.

Anne

This is what I do and then I run it up on my own ankles. I have nobody to post about but me.

I irritate myself so much. :sad2:
