So I am almost 25 and have never been on the teacups.

I am scared to get on them for fear they will make me vomit!

For all of you fans out there, I have a question, I know the teacups go around on a track and that there is that thing in the middle to make them spin, if you don't spin it yourself using the handle (?) in the middle will they automatically spin?

Techinically, if I don't spin it, won't I be taking a fairly lesiurely ride in a circle seated in a oversized teacup?

It has just a natural spin as the basic ride. Me (40) and my son rode it for first time last year. The basic spin is not that bad at all. If you start working on the wheel in the middle you will get a lot more spin.

If you don't turn your wheel, you won't spin AS MUCH- here's the deal:

The teacups are on a large circle that spins one way. Each set of 4 teacups is on a smaller circle that spins the opposite way. Your individual teacup can then spin itself. Potentially, you can spin 3 different ways- largest circle, smaller circles, and individual cups. If you don't spin your own cup, you will still spin in 2 different directions simultaneously. If you get motion sickness, the 2 different spinning motions might get you woozy. But you won't be spinning nearly as fast as if you twirl your own cup.

You will still spin a bit I think there are 16 cars in 4 sets of 4. So each set of 4 cars spin as a group and the 4 groups spin around the center. It hard to describe you will just have to see it for yourself.

blech, this is making me want to puke just thinking about the teacups!

I plan on taking a dramamine early in the day to prevent such mishaps! You may want to do the same! :)

other thing to do is reverse the spin of the cup everyonce in a while even if not spinning it fast still do a small rotation in the opposite direction to lessen the effects.

We spin like Mad then reverse and get off walking with no problem at all.

This is what we do and it works wonders. I love spinning but I get vertigo easily. Love the tea cups!

I procrastinated the tea cups on our trip a couple weeks ago. I finally went on after my DD6 agreed that we would only spin a bit. Well, what I noticed the most was that if I looked around and saw all the other tea cups spinning wildly I really got woosy in the tummy. So I let her have her fun while I looked at my pictures on my camera. I still felt a bit blech but I didn't get as sick as I normally do...until she drug me on the Astro Orbiter!:rotfl2:

Another thing that may help is having someone sit across from you, and you could focus on them. If you start looking around, it can trigger that pesky woozy feeling.

I suppose it depends on what makes you vomit...

I easily get motion sick, and have even got carsick while I am the driver. Not spinning the cup, looking at someone across from me, or spinning in reverse, wouldn't help me. Riding those things make me sick!

I get really sick on rides but I wanted to ride the teacups with my son for the first time. My brother was also with us and decided to spin that thing like no tomorrow . I wanted him to stop but he wouldn't. I didn't puke but I know it woulod have been just fine if he didn't spin it. I think you'll be okay.

Miss Weak Stomach here...

As for me, I take 1/4 to 1/2 of a dramamine pill in the morning. Sometimes I wonder if the effects are mostly psychological... because even though I take very little, it works and doesn't put me to sleep.

The tea cups are NOT bad at all. In fact, you can reverse the natural spin of the cup so that it remains facing one direction the whole time, if you'd like... just hold on to the wheel and pull gently in the opposite direction. It LOOKs worse from the sidelines than it feels while on the ride. Watching it spin makes me dizzy too.

Now, Star Tours... DON'T DO IT! I was yak-ing for the rest of the day. Once was enough for me... and now it is a running joke for the family every time we go.

Oh those dreaded tea cups. My DH cranked on that wheel and I looked like this for the rest of the week.
The weird part is is that from that point on everythign that moved gave me a headache.
I think if you leave that wheel alone its all good. with that said... I will NEVER get on that ride again!

Speaking as a Disneyland teacup veteran: I love the teacups! I've learned to maximize the spinning sensation, so I also know what lessens it. I've also been on with kids who couldn't stand it and had to help them. I encourage you to try it just once. It really looks much worse than it is.

To make it more intense (i.e. things you don't want to do):
  • Get everyone in the cup to spin the wheel! (everyone trying to quickly coordinate hands and timing pulls is almost as fun as the spinning itself - always has us cracking up :rotfl:)
  • Sit back in the cup and look either straight ahead or up a little. Let your head roll or sit perfectly still and watching everything go by really blurry!

To weaken the ride:
  • Don't turn the wheel, of course. It makes a big difference. Or turn it "backwards" very slowly (away from the direction you're traveling).
  • Look at anything stationary, preferably down inside the cup. Focusing on another person's face is not always the best idea since you might also see the blurry scenery behind them.
  • Lean in a little. The further away you are from the outside of the circle
  • You can also try a pirouette "head turn", where you look at a stationary object way in the distance and hold on to it as long as you can. It's how ballet dancers spin themselves silly without getting dizzy.
  • Don't ride with darling family members who think it's funny to spin you faster when you're feeling ill. *glares at her husband *

OMG I did these on my very first trip back in 1992, I can typically do rollarcoasters etc... but this ride made me dizzy , so I haven't been on it since. I am however going to attempt it this June (no spinning) & maybe Mission Space the only other ride I've not done. For whatever reason I found the older I got the less tolerant I was of "these rides. I now have to "manage" my rides. If I do Everest, I have to wait at least a 1/2 hour before I do another ride like that again...:confused3 crazy I know.

I wonder if taking Benadryl would help? Not trying to scare you...maybe just try it once; it's the only way you'll find out. I seriously don't think you'll get as far as physically getting sick though. Good luck

This is the one ride in MK that I cannot go on...I will be sick to death the rest of the day....dont know why cuz as a kid I loved these rides
