A Stringbean, a Wingnut, and a plan! (A January '12 PTR) TRIP REPORT STARTED!! 1/16!!

Sorry to hear about your back! and how does one scratch themselves on a frozen roast beef? :confused3

You do have redeeming qualities! You update your PTR! There are so many that I'm subscribed to that people just give up on. Thanks for that! :thumbsup2

I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year so I'll be cooking the bird and all its trimmings! Well my mom will be bringing squash & I'll make the potatoes & green beans (easy ;)) Oh and I'm making a cheesecake but before you  its a NO BAKE cheesecake! Easy peezy lemon squeezy!

Day 21: Your Favorite Character to See in the Park - I like seeing Goofy, he's the only one taller than I am! :lmao:

Day 22: Your Favorite Parade- Spectromagic. Gives me goosebumps each time!

My first WDW trip was in 2000 and I LOVED the Tapestry of Nations parade. I had to buy the soundtrack before I left! :goodvibes

Thanks!! I have absolutely no idea, but apparently it IS possible! Defrost with caution, people!

Aww thanks!! I love updating, no chance of me abandoning my report!

Wow, very impressive! I'm sure your bird is going to come out great! And I have made no-bake cheesecake before!!! Isn't it the most brilliant thing ever? Actually, I invented a recipe for it (that can easily be made dairy-free!) a few years ago, it's inspired by magic cookie bars!

Crust:
1 cup of Pecan Sandies cookies (I'd say about 8 of them would be good - I ground up 10 and it was too many)
1/2 cup of graham cracker crumbs
3 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of sugar

Filling:
8 ounces of cream cheese (A great substitute here is Tofutti's Better Than Cream Cheese - in my opinion, it has a great texture and taste.)
1/3 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
1 cup of Cool Whip (thawed)

Topping:
Semisweet chocolate chips
Butterscotch chips
Toasted coconut (put as much shredded coconut as you'd like on a baking sheet, turn the oven to 350, and take it out every 2 minutes or so, tossing the coconut around, until it is dried and lovely golden hue)

To make:
*Crush the cookies, and mix together with the rest of the ingredients for the crust in a bowl until everything is lightly moistened and looks like it will hold up to be a mighty fine crust. Press the mixture into your springform pan, and refrigerate until you're ready to add the filling.
*Beat together the non-dairy cream cheese, sugar, and lemon juice until it is smooth. Incorporate the Cool Whip. Spread the filling on top of your crust.
*Sprinkle the toppings on top of the filling (I added the toasted coconut after it had been frozen for awhile, but either way is ok)
*Freeze for at least two hours (I froze it for a day).
*Place in the refrigerator an hour before serving.

While it doesn't have the exact rich cheesecakey qualities that, well, cheesecake itself does, this is still a pretty good dessert!

I love that CD that has the Tapestry of Nations music on it! That one (at least the version I have) also has Illuminations on it too! :lovestruc

I am definitely trying a Napoleon when we go. My mom and I have plans to shop and eat around Epcot so she can get the lemon tart and I can try the Napoleon...

Oh my gosh I was so upset with my sister when we got off Stitch :lmao: That ride stressed me out so badly and I said I'd never believe her again and I should have just gone with what the DIS said about it!

Sorry to hear about your back, I hope it's better by now!

Favorite character to see in the park...never actually seen him in the park but I would LOVE to see Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh. He was my favorite when I was a child and I still love him. Favorite parade: I also LOVED the Tapestry of Nations parade. I have the soundtrack on my iPod and listen to it all the time. It was such a great parade! My favorite current (well, current-ish) parade is SpectroMagic. It's the one parade we always used to see and I just get chills when I hear "on this magic night..." :goodvibes I'm sad it probably won't be there in January but I am willing to give MSEP a chance!

I think that is an excellent pastry plan! :thumbsup2

Hahahaha Stitch is pretty awful! I really did think that people talking about it were exaggerating though, before I actually experienced it. Never ever ever again!

Thanks!! It's definitely starting to get better, thank goodness!

I don't think I've ever seen Rabbit around either. I think if he was going to be anywhere, it'd be Crystal Palace, and I'm sure he's not in that lineup.

Tapestry of Nations really was a fantastic parade! I love MSEP for the nostalgia of it, it's a fun one too (but the music does get a bit... repetitive...hahaha)

Sorry to hear about your back. You know what will make it better?

A Disney holiday shirt. from Target. Yup.

Fave character to see at the parks? Jessie - all because of the reactions from my little girl. And Minnie Mouse.

Fave parade? Spectromagic. add me to that list of bitter people that it's gone. My fave way to the end the night was watching Spectro and Wishes. The music just gives me the Disney feeling.

Yum baking! I just made ginger snaps for a get together at our apartment and they're all gone already. I know too many boys. We don't really celebrate Thanksgiving so no real special baking for me :sad1:

Day 19: Stitch. Stitchstitchstitchstitchstitch. Such a waste of space. I can ~see the point~ of pretty much everything else, but not that one! (And Lilo and Stitch is one of my favorite Disney movies!)

Day 20: Hmm.. have to stick my old favorite, funnel cake!

Day 21/22: Ah, we're not really character or parade people. I really don't like the Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It parade. The night parades at MK are pretty neat but I just really like decorative lights. Bear wants to meet Cap'n Jack at our MVMCP if the line's not too long (we'll do Rapunzel/Flynn if it's not outrageous as well).

I hope your back feels better!

Hahahaha perfect medicine! :thumbsup2

The reactions from your little girl to any of the characters are awesome, but the ones to Jessie and Minnie are especially great! She is such a character-loving girl! :goodvibes

Spectromagic is getting so much love here! The music for that parade really is so "Disney" and wonderful.

Hahaha I baked the brownies last night to bring for Thanksgiving - I like to bake them in those disposable pans that I just bring them right in (convenient, and it stops anyone from sneaking one!)

Definitely same here - I love Stitch the character, but definitely not the ride!

We're the same way, not really parade or character people. But it is fun to see them sometimes!

Thanks!!

Me: Do you want to take a look and see what parks we want to go to on each day?

Wingnut: Sure.

So we start going through the calendar/ADR list, noting what makes sense (Crystal Palace breakfast ADR - morning at MK) and filling in the rest with a combination of Epcot, DHS, and MK.

Until Wingnut was all:

Why don't we give Animal Kingdom another shot?

(Okay. A bit of back story here for those of you that are like, "I was wondering why you were skipping AK in the first place". I had been to AK a couple of times before the ill-fated trip this past time with Wingnut. And to be honest, I was never THAT particularly enamored with it.

Me, several years ago, in AK.

(Unflattering picture ahead.)

("Can we go back to Epcot now?")

And so, particularly since our last trip, AK had pretty much been deemed a "not really our kind of thing" park. When I had been getting the park hours for our trip, Wingnut had even told me to skip getting the ones for AK, as they'd be totally unnecessary.

(Back story over pixiedust:.)

Me: Um. Really???

Wingnut: Sure. We both weren't feeling well last time, we could give it another try. We both liked the safari. And maybe we could go on Dinosaur. But no Finding Nemo this time.

Me: Okay, we'll give it another try!

And that is the story of how Stringbean and Wingnut WILL be going back to Animal Kingdom this time around! (Probably not the most shocking news of the decade, but hey, I was still a little surprised )

And so now, your help is needed! What attractions/activities (remember, pastries count as an attraction!) would you AK-lovers recommend? We enjoyed the safari, did not like Finding Nemo, and aren't really roller coaster ride people. (Unless Wingnut has another startling announcement in store :rotfl:.)

On AK-unrelated notes:

The Muppets comes out today!!! :yay::yay: Wingnut and I plan to see it at some point this weekend (what point exactly remains to be planned), and are very hopeful that this movie is on a par with the classics.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful and delicious and safe holiday!! :grouphug:

I love AK. To me the attraction is all in the details of this park.

So - here are my suggestions:

Even if you don't ride EE, walk through the queue. It is cool and filled with so many unique things. Are you absolutely sure you can't ride it. It is a very unique ride. The view from the top of the mountain is worth the trip alone. If you ride - avoid the back rows. The backwards part of the ride can be a tad intense, but is way better if you sit up front and close your eyes. It's not as bad as RnR, but a notch above Space and Big Thunder.

How about the paths - Mahalarajah (sp?) and the other one. It's an opportunity to get some great pictures.

One of my fav things to do (if you like to take pictures) is walk all around the tree of life and see how many animals you can find/take pictures of. Denny and I did this one December and we literally spent 45 mins to an hour back there in complete solitude. It's a path that actually had a name, but is often overlooked.

I enjoy just walking through and around Asia and taking pictures of EE and all the other interesting themes.

FOTLK? Do you like that.

I love Dinosaur. I don't know why, I just do.

I also really like the parade, but that means you would have to spend more than a 1/2 day or arrive later.

Take LOTS of pictures. Almost everything you see there is picture worthy. When you start seeing all the small, over looked details you many start to like the park better.

There's the bakery in Africa right by the enterance for the safari. Sorry all my suggestions will probably be food related.

I love FOTLK, its sort of like how HS's BATB isn't really the Broadway version, but similar, FOTLK has more Broadway version in it.

Its not going to be hot enough for the rapids. I can do Everest but after the 2nd time my head starts hurting. BF liked walking through a trail and seeing the tigers.

I heard Flights of Wonder is good too.

We love Animal Kingdom!!!

and Festival of the Lion King.

AnimalKingdom10-09045.jpg

I hope you can find enough to make your time at Animal Kingdom a good experience for both of you.

Hooray for second chances...even AK deserves one! I love EE, and I am a roller coaster wimp. It's by far my favorite "thrill ride" at WDW. The Maharaja Jungle Trek is awesome, too. Dinosaur always leaves me feeling like I need a chiropractor, but I ride it anyway. :lmao: I cannot say enough good things about FOTLK...easily the best show on Disney property (IMO). I put off seeing it for a long time because I was certain there was no way it could live up to the hype, but I'm a true believer now. If you're in to photography, there are tons of unique photos opp!

Wow MeMom - this is a GREAT picture! In all my 1000's and 1000's of Disney pictures, I have yet to get a really good picture of the lion.

Love your AK montage. If that doesn't make Stringbean and Wingnut long for the AK, I don't know what will. Hmmmmm....maybe the Dawa Bar and a Lost on Safari????? :rotfl:

I lost track of your PTR but recently found it again and caught up thanks to your links. :yay: Yay for staying at the Poly!! That's my fave Monorail resort and I hope one day to be able to stay there.

AK may be my least fave park out of the 4 but I still love it. We usually give it a day if not more. The Lion King show is worth the visit to the park alone in my opinion. I also like the Majarajah Jungle Trek and the Pangani Trail for the Tigers and Gorillas, respectively.

As MEK said there is so much there that is picture worthy as well.

I was never a huge AK fan either, but I've come to appreciate it more and more each trip. Asia is absolutely beautiful. It's too bad you guys don't like coasters, because EE is so much fun! Do you like BTMRR? If so, you can handle EE, it's a little more intense, but it's not scary! :cool1:

Dinosaur is fun, Festival of the Lion King is amazing! And the safari is great too!

Oh and the jalapeno pretzels there are fantastic. I wasn't planning on doing AK on our short December trip at first, but now that we have another day, I'm squeezing it in, partly just to get one of those pretzels. :yay:

It's funny because after reading your PTR (ok, and lurking for a long time as I've lapsed from commenting-sorry!), it seems like you and Wingnut have very similar taste to DH and myself with one exception: we both LOVE Animal Kingdom!

I really enjoy the safari, and I agree with others who suggested doing the nature walks. We also love Festival of the Lion King and It's Tough to Be A Bug. I would also say that Everest is worth doing-the views are neat, the line is fun and the "story" (with the Yeti) is cool, too.

As far as food, I will admit that AK is no EPCOT. But, we like Flame Tree BBQ for something quick and pretty tasty. The buffet at Tusker House is pretty good, too. I know some people seem to love Yak & Yeti but I personally wasn't a huge fan.

I think you made a great choice and I hope you have a blast! MY DH and I are both EPCOT people through and through, but I think we both always love doing an AK day because it's so different and you can take a really slow relaxing pace there.

I completely understand your lack of enthusiasm for AK. We've been three times now and we had one really good day there, out of the three. That said, I'd love to go back without Max and get a chance to really slow down and take it all in. There are so many beautiful photo ops. And I did love EE! It only looks super scary from the ground. And Mary Ellen is right...the queue is great.

Well, I am not a huge AK fan, either, but I was determined to give it another shot on our last trip (and the details of the day will be the next day on my TR). We enjoyed it this time! Now, if I'm being honest, I could still take it or leave it, but we definitely appreciate it a lot more since we went in with an open mind! It has AMAZING picture spots, and the jalapeno pretzels and frozen pineapple bars are delish. It will always be a "no more than half day" park for us, but it was still fun. There are even things we have yet to try, but we'll try those next time since there are now things we never feel the need to do again:thumbsup2.
Our favorites: jalapeno pretzels, frozen pineapple bars, safari, Maharaja Jungle Trek, and Everest (though you might not enjoy that).

Thanks for the great suggestions!! I am a big ride wimp, so I don't see actually RIDING EE in my future, but maybe we will take a stroll through the queue!

I really want to see FOTLK this time around, it does look great.

It does seem like AK is a "focus on the details" sort of park. I think that we will be much more amenable to that when unencumbered with the wheelchair!

There's the bakery in Africa right by the enterance for the safari. Sorry all my suggestions will probably be food related.

I love FOTLK, its sort of like how HS's BATB isn't really the Broadway version, but similar, FOTLK has more Broadway version in it.

I heard Flights of Wonder is good too.

Hahaha food-related suggestions are perfect for us! I've seen pictures of the awesome offerings of one of the bakeries in AK - is that the place with the elephant cupcakes?

I've been on the rapids before, and thought it was fun, but kind of short. I was still expecting a big drop when we rolled back into the dock :rotfl:.

We love Animal Kingdom!!!

I hope you can find enough to make your time at Animal Kingdom a good experience for both of you.

Awesome AK pictures, MeMom!! (Actually, your pictures made me realize that I've never even been inside any of the shops at AK! How can THAT be??? :rotfl:)

Well, for Wingnut, this is a second chance (for me, this is more like a 4th chance - I really have tried to love this park before!). I'm very excited to see FOTLK, it really looks awesome! Wingnut wants to ride Dinosaur again, we'll see about that one though (it's just SO loud and bumpy!!).

:rotfl:

I always get lion-butt pictures too :rotfl:. Or "that beige lump in the grass is probably a lion" ones.

Bar??? Now we're talkin! :lmao:

I lost track of your PTR but recently found it again and caught up thanks to your links. :yay: Yay for staying at the Poly!! That's my fave Monorail resort and I hope one day to be able to stay there.

As MEK said there is so much there that is picture worthy as well.

We're really excited about the Poly - I've never stayed on the monorail loop before, so this will be really different for us!

I never expected the Jungle Treks and Trails to be recommended so much, honestly! We'll definitely have to give at least one of those a try!

:cool1:

I think that BTMRR is a bit too bumpy for me (yes, I know, biggest ride wimp on the planet), we'll see though...

Oooh I definitely want to give those pretzels a try? Are they very spicy? If they're spicy, they'd be right up Wingnut's alley then!

I WANT to love AK, I swear!

Flame Tree BBQ does look good for a lunch option. I am looking forward to giving AK another try, taking it slow, and appreciating the surroundings (hopefully!).

From the little amount of time I've actually spent there, I have noticed that AK definitely is full of great photo ops. I hope that we are able to enjoy it more when we go though! Maybe we just get used to running around the other parks that it's hard to switch gears and stroll down a path at AK for us?

Well, I am not a huge AK fan, either, but I was determined to give it another shot on our last trip (and the details of the day will be the next day on my TR). We enjoyed it this time! Now, if I'm being honest, I could still take it or leave it, but we definitely appreciate it a lot more since we went in with an open mind! Our favorites: jalapeno pretzels, frozen pineapple bars, safari, Maharaja Jungle Trek, and Everest (though you might not enjoy that).

That's what we're hoping for! I know it'll be hard-pressed to be my new-favorite park, but I would love to appreciate it more!

Mmm...frozen pineapple bars sound really good! Perhaps AK has better snack options than I had thought before!

We are now well under 50 days until our trip, and I feel as though we've hit that Disney planning lull (actually, I think normally people hit this much earlier, but we move things around so much, so it gets a bit delayed...). No Mickey Mail yet (doesn't that come at around 45 days and 20 days, or am I remembering that wrong?), just Wingnut continually asking me how many days we have left to get us both all excited.

Did you guys go see The Muppets??? Did you like it? Wingnut and I did, we were really happy that we both thought it was a great Muppets movie :goodvibes.

(This isn't giving away any plot, I promise...)

(Did anyone else's movie theater have dressed-up characters (ours were Kermit and Fozzie) wandering in and out of the theater before and after the movie? It was definitely a cute touch, if not a bit random )

We've also been VERY excited to start decorating the apartment for the holidays, and did that this past weekend:

(Wingnut's is Santa, I got the snowman)

I'll admit it, back when we were first even LOOKING at this apartment, I was getting excited to decorate the banister for the holidays

(We haven't decided on a tree topper yet .)

Feel free to share your decorations too!! :goodvibes

And how about two more questions, while we're all here:

Day 23: The Scariest Ride

For me, that has to be the Tower of Terror, if only because I am scared that I will ever have to go back on it again! I can successfully say that I have done it once (my dad and I went on it years ago), and we both HATED it! We're definitely more Splash Mountain people than ToT!

Day 24: Your Favorite Face Character

I know that they probably aren't traditionally thought of as face characters, but I'm going to go with the Streetmosphere people in DHS. They always make me laugh when I'm there (I love the director in particular), and I love reading about their antics in people's TR's here.

How about you guys?

Yep, that's the same bakery as the elephant cupcake. Its sort of hidden on the left towards the safari before the leather and face painting booth. I midst packing for December and decorating, but this year its very Disney themed. The last three years its been blue, white, and silve themed.

Day 23: The Scariest Ride

For something I rode, Splash. I hate drops. or Space Mountain, I hate not being able to see where I'm going. For something I haven't ridden, ToT scares me and RnRC, Mission Space, Dinosaur. Yep I'm a ride chicken!

Day 24: Your Favorite Face Character

Belle. Rapunzel. and Tiana. I just love Belle in general. But I appreciated Rapunzel and Tiana taking time to talk to me and not feel awkard to be a solo adult in their line to meet them. Can I add the parade performers? That has been be a tough job to do the same thing multiple times a day and weeks in all sorts of weather!

Ah, the dreaded planning lull. I know it well.

Your decorations are great! I love it when I'm all done and can stand back and just soak in the Christmasy feeling. We're putting ours up this weekend, after buying a new tree. For some reason, Gabriel is against my pink tree. :confused3 I was way too into the pink Christmas thing last year. Don't judge me. :lmao:

My scariest ride is also ToT, but in a good way. I'm a charter member of the Thrill Ride Wienies of America (no Islands of Adventure for me!), but I actually like most of the coasters at WDW. Except RnR. Not fun for me. But there's something about ToT's heart pounding :scared1: stomach dropping :scared1: OMG I'm gonna die :scared1: and ain't it great :thumbsup2 awesomeness that I love.

I am SO crazy. :upsidedow

My favorite face character is Jack Sparrow pirate:. My BFF and I had the BEST interaction with him! Two words: Awe. Some.
