A small Dumbo update and an interesting thing I learned in the park today (+ pics, as always)

As you can (sort of) see in the first pic below, the Dumbo refurb is coming along. I spoke to a fellow-Chicagoan CM and she explained that it's still on track to reopen on April 27.

Here's something else interesting that she told me: until recently, she worked in the parking structure. If guests get lost/can't remember where they parked, structure CMs can determine which level they're parked on if they're told the approximate time that the guest arrived. I had no idea! Apparently they keep track for just this reason.

Here's another interesting CM tale from the trenches. I often talk with CMs and ask him/her what their favorite story/experience from the park is, good or bad. An Autopia CM told me today that one guest didn't like the row and car color that she'd been assigned. The way she expressed her dissatisfaction was to take a full-on swing at the CM. Then she ran off. Of course park security found her and she was escorted off premises. I didn't ask, but I certainly hope that she was banned permanently.

Surprisingly (at least to me), this sort of thing isn't uncommon. Others CMs have told me that guests have hit or shoved them, usually for something inconsequential that most (all?) sane guests would take in stride. One I spoke with about a year ago said that park security will remove the guest and then charges may be pressed with the Anaheim PD at the CM's discretion. Crazy. I often wonder where people think they are.

Anyway, here are some pics from the park today. Again, the first is of the Dumbo walls. The others are largely self explanatory. I was the first in the park and I always like to get pics of a vacant Main Street and the like. I also fared well on Buzz today. I was very pleased with my score of 2,072,700. As I've mentioned countless times in the past, if a score passes 2,099,999 (or thereabouts), it will be reset. That happened to me once today and it's always irksome and frustrating.

Crowds were typical for a Sunday today. Neither better nor worse than average. I often try to game the system and speculate that, for whatever reason, attendance will be low on a given day -- The Super Bowl, The Oscars, the anythings. The only thing that seems to make any real difference is heavy rain, in which case, attendance will be light.

Side note: at rope drop this morning, I stepped off at my usual brisk walk. But almost immediately I spied a guy bolting -- bolting -- ahead of me. He was running at top speed. That kind of thing always annoys me because it's unsafe, unfair to other guests and commonly triggers other guests to run. Those that do, in effect, thereby steal the spot(s) of guests that managed their time well and arrived at the park early. I won't tolerate this and -- like it or not -- I'll also run to preserve my position. Posters have criticized me on this board before because, they argue, this makes me no better than said runner(s), essentially. Criticize all you like -- I won't be cheated. If someone outwalks me, props; all the credit in the world to them. But if they run, I'm sorry but I won't stand by and do nothing. I wish that CMs were empowered to do more to help. Other than verbal warnings, it seems there isn't much that they can do. Runners seem to know and benefit from this. In any case, I was happy to be first on Peter Pan today.

Please enjoy the pics! I picked up a few sets of maps, if anybody needs one.

Despite the fact that this pic was taken at around 8:25 this morning, I was still able to snap it with no guests in shot.

I enjoyed watching CMs mix the pink coating for the Tigger Tails. They'd add a little white, then compare it to an already-made Tail and then add a little more, if needed, until the colors matched.

The Splash Mountain refurb is also coming along. The folks at Fresh Baked saw boats floating towards the top the previous day so it seems that at least testing is underway.

This is what the former Pinocchio parking lot looks like now.

And my obligatory/customary Buzz pics (plus a few others):

A few more points and I would have lost everything. It's always a challenge to score in the sweet spot -- between 2M and 2,099,900. Anything under and you haven't broken two million. Anything above ≈ 2,099,900 and you lose everything; your score resets. Bear in mind that once you pass 1M, all that will display is 999999. You have to do you best to keep track of your score in your head. It's not always easy, which is why I often go over 2,090,900.

Well, I was once "punched in the face" at Disneyland. It was an "accident" inflicted on me, an innocent bystander, but hurt like heck (clean version of how it felt)! The person didn't listen to a Castmembers and did something stupid. I paid the price. The second thing security asked me, after checking if I was okay, was if I wanted press charges (I did not). They are very on that. The person was detained by security and then escorted out of the park. I spent over an hour in first aid. And the bruise lasted over a week!!!

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me at all. Last year at MHP, several guests (all adults, in completely unrelated incidents) thought I was a CM (wasn't dressed as one, acting like one, posing as one, etc.). What was surprising about the rude behavior and borderline abusive treatment that these guests handed out was how normal it seemed to them: yelling at me, shoving trash at me, hitting me to get my attention, etc. We spoke with several CMs about it later, and they all agreed that this kind of guest behavior isn't unusual. It just made us that much more aware about how we treat the CMs.
And now on to the main point of this post: Welcome back to your home park! I'll bet they missed you at BLAB!

Thank you! I had a wonderful time in Shanghai (the city, not necessarily the park) but it's great to be home. Now: if I can only get over this 15-hour-time-difference jet lag... ;-).

Yikes! unbelievable how someone would treat CMs so bad.....what are they thinking??.....oh, yeah, brainless morons.
Thanks for the report....and pics are great!

That is just so sad. I remember you sharing this story when it happened. I truly cannot fathom how people can treat other people that way anywhere, but especially at Disneyland and a party at Disneyland at that.

Awesome pictures! Can I ask how the streets are so empty? What time do I need to be there to experience such solitude!

Always love your updates! Our first day in the parks for our May trip is a Sunday- can you share how early you arrive to get through security/gates etc please?

Thanks for the great pics, they're always appreciated!
Sadly, I am sure the CM's stories are very accurate. During our last trip a couple of years ago, We saw and experienced visitors getting physical and even trying to start fights. I just don't get it but I wish Disney would increase their security presence and eject these people.
Between the overcrowding and abusive guests we experienced, we haven't been back.

Thanks! Typically I arrive at the front gates around 7:15 or so (on days when the park opens at 8:00). The streets are only like that for about four or five seconds once the guests begin to pour in. In short, it doesn't last. Many people try to grab this kind of photo so you have to walk as fast as you can to be there first. Sometimes other entrance gates let people go a second or two ahead of mine and then this shot becomes impossible.

I arrive around 7:15 or so. In your case, perhaps aim to arrive even earlier. Say, 7:00? People I know arrive even before then. Hell, they get to the parking structure at 6:00.

Lastly, with this round of Buzz, I knew I was getting close to 2M, so I stopped shooting with my primary gun and picked up the second. So, in effect, my score was approx. 2,345,000.

We are staying across at Desert Inn and Suites - thanks for the info!
