A Sensible Dinner - Pearlieq's Journal

Good morning, Pearlieq! :sunny:

Sounds like you are having fun in Vegas. I agree, Disney does spoil a person. DH and I were discussing that the other day, but it's our one big luxury, so we wouldn't give it up.

As far as the show girls. I am sure that part of the problem that you are having with your reaction is the fact that show girls are always portrayed as very thin women, so seeing something different does throw you for a loop. In my opinion, I think Dear Abby is correct. If you were truly comfortable with bigger sizes being attractive, you wouldn't change how you yourself look. At least it fits my thinking. I see women who are bigger and who have very beautiful faces, but there is always a part of me that knows that if they lost a few lbs, they would be even more striking. To me, that is just a fact, not so much a judgement, but I guess some would say that I am judging. From my standpoint, I find that when people lose weight, they feel better about themselves and most generally will take better care of themselves which adds to the attractiveness and definitely boosts confidence. Personally, I know that I am dressing better and spending a little more time on myself in the mornings. And yes, DH seems even more attracted, but I don't fault him for that because I am the one who made that difference.

Sorry, for the lengthy post, but maybe it helps to hear someone else's opinion on this as you figure out what you feel about the issue.

Hope that you have a great day! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

10/18/05 - It's raining in a desert!

9:00am

--1 medium size spinach, tomato, and cheddar omelet
--1 piece white toast w/1 pkt strawberry jam
--1 cup hash browns

This was a quite tasty. I've been shocked at how good the food at our hotel has been on this trip, and then it struck me that the last few times we've been in Vegas we've stayed in less than posh accomodations--of course my expectations for the food have been low! This is by far the nicest Vegas hotel we've enjoyed, so I now just need to break the habit of cringing ever time I order something in the coffee shop.

The morning was pretty quiet. After breakfast DH played roulette for a little bit. He had a bunch of friends that sent a few dollars with him to wager on their behalf. Unfortunately for them, it was all lost pretty quickly. I'm so not a gambler--to me it seems like a huge waste of money. I could buy groceries for a week on what he lost in less than 15 minutes! Still, he had a good time and DH has a good sense of his limits, so I won't complain.

After his spin on the tables, we headed upstairs for an IMAX show called Mystery of the Nile. It was so cool!!! This film crew tracked the Nile through the source of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. The scenery was just so breathtaking, the story was compelling, and the music was well chosen--it was a great adventure! There was a bit of a Tenzig Norgay problem in that the man was accompanied by a largely unacknowledged native crew. Hopefully they're acknowledged to have completed the journey as well.

12:00pm

--1 veggie burger w/mozzarella on a whole wheat bun
--4-5 steak fries
--1/2 cup sugar free chocolate gelato

After our show we made the trek back over to Mandalay to get registered for the conference. It's a heck of a hike from here to the convention center. It's honestly about a mile, which is another reason I'm not worrying too much about what I eat here!

After we got checked in, we headed back toward a restaurant we noticed yesterday called the Burger Bar. They had not one, but two types of veggie burgers, which is practically unheard of! Usually you're lucky to get a reheated Boca patty. The burger was amazing! It was made of grains, rice, soy, veggies, cheese, and spices and everything was very well balanced. I'm hoping we can get another one before we leave. Once we were done with lunch we had to stop in on the gelato shop next door! DH and I split a medium chocolate gelato and it was also really good.

DH is off to his first sessions now, so I've got the afternoon to myself. It's still raining, which kind of put a kink in my plans to walk around, but I think I'm going to walk through Excalibur over to the Tropicana to see their Titanic exhibition. I don't know why but I've always been fascinated by the Titanic and it seems to be a pretty elaborate spread. After that I may look around some of the hotels and do some shopping, or I may just head back here and enjoy some quiet time and a book until I have to get ready for the show tonight.

4:00pm

--1 sm vanilla cone
--1 fruit 'n yogurt parfait.

Well, I headed over to Tropicanca to see the Titanic exhibit. On the way there I stopped by their Las Vegas history museum. It was brief but interesting, and since it was free, the price was right. The Titanic exhibit turned out to be the same one that traveled to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago back in the late 90's. I couldn't wait to see it then and I really enjoyed it now as well. It does have a creepiness factor though. Obviously it a morbid subject to begin with, but it's also very dark with lots of blind corners and shadows. Plus, they have a replica of the ships boilers thudding away like a tell-tale heart. It's just very easy for someone as easily creeped out as me to get, well, creeped out.

I did love seeing the replicas of the cabins, the mock iceberg, and the salvaged section of the ships hull. First class passage started at $45,000 in today's dollars. Can you imagine spending that on a 7 day cruise with no ports and minimal entertainment? I feel better about my egregiously overpriced Disney cruise now!

When I was done with the museum I headed over to MGM and then New York, New York before realizing there really wan't anything I wanted to see at either. So, I headed back to our room. I'm going to enjoy a book for an hour or so and then start getting ready for the show tonight. I can't wait!!!

7:00pm

--1 SB bar

So, I tried to get ready for the show and it was kind of a bust. My hair didn't turn out, I looked like a kabuki ghoul when I finished my makeup, and the dress I picked didn't look quite as good on me as I remembered (a happy problem, since the problem was it was too big, but still a problem at the time). But, it's dark in the theater, right? :teeth:

We had an easy time getting over to Caesar's and found the theater and our seats quickly. We had amazing seats--4th row center! As far as the show goes--I have no words. :goodvibes

But of course I'll use several of them to try to express it. It was beyond incredible. Our tickets were over $500 and the show was worth every single last cent and more! We had such a clear view of Elton, though if we ever go again (which I would do, and pay for, in a heartbeat!) I'd love to be farther to the left so I can actually watch him play his piano. We could see his face and all, but it would be really neat to watch those hands work! Elton himself was friendly, spirited, energetic, and wickedly funny. He had both DH and I in stiches when he made jokes about Celine Dion, who does most of the performances in that theater. He made a point of walking around the stage and acknowledging the crowd often, and taking special care not to neglect any section of the theater.

The music was amazing, but what truly made the show spectacular was the videos/vignettes created by David LaChapelle to go with most songs. He did a brillant video of Justin Timberlake playing a young Elton John preparing for a show for "Rocket Man". That one was my favorite. DH was really impressed by the one for "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" which featured a lyrical pas de deux. I'm not usually a huge fan of lyrical dance but this was so raw, intense, and innovative that I was simply captivated. I honestly didn't know the human body could do some of the things these dancers did! I kind of felt bad because the videos were so compelling that I actually forgot to watch Elton for several songs! He did make an interesting comment that the song people people seem to be most confused about is "Daniel". Do people really not get what that's about or am I missing something? The video for that was also quite touching.

When he starting playing "Saturday Night" they allowed the folks in the first 5 rows to go up on stage! DH and I did not know it was coming and by the time we realized what was going on most of our section had cleared and the stage was a giant mob of people. We held back for a while, mostly because we were shocked and feeling bashful, but eventually made our way to the very edge of the stage for a closer look at Elton. What a neat thing to offer, though I'm sorry we didn't go right up. It just goes to prove the adage that it's most often the things you don't do that you regret. Still, I have no complaints about the night.

He ended the show with "Your Song" and I actually found myself crying, which surprised me at bit. It is a very sweet song, though. All in all it was an hour and 45 minutes with no intermission and it was just amazing. If you ever have the opportunity, RUN to see this show!!!

10:00pm

--2 cheese enhiladas
--3 T sour cream
--1/2 cup mexican rice
--1 raspberry smoothie
--1/4 basket chips
--1/4 cup salsa

We were supposed to have dinner at Olives at the Bellagio, but since it's been so rainy the outdoor patio overlooking the fountain was closed. Since that was the main draw for us we passed and headed back to the cantina at the Luxor. The food was great, just like last night.

I paid for the meal with my Disney Visa, and as our waitress brought the check back she asked it we were Disney people and if we ever went to the DIS boards! It was so cool! My first ever real life encounter with a DIS person!!! It turns out she's going on a cruise soon and we had posted in the same thread on the cruise boards today. How cool is that?!?

11:00pm

--1/4 cup M&Ms

Just a little something sweet after dinner. DH is off playing poker (am I a poker widow yet? :teeth: ) and I'm relaxing up in the room. I may take another soak in the tub, or I may just curl up with a book and save it for the AM.

Not sure what I've got going on tomorrow. The company that is running the convention bought me access to all of the convention meals, which was very nice of them. Unfortunately, breakfast is at 7:00am and I hear it's continental. I'm just not sure I want to get up at 6:30 am and walk a mile and a half for a bagel, even if it is free, kwim? I will be meeting DH for the convention lunch at 12:30, which kind of throws a wrinkle into my day. I think I may just hang around here for the morning--sleep in, catch a bath, do some more reading. Then after lunch I'm going to go catch the showgirl tour at Bally's and then do a little shopping and sightseeing. It will be a leisurely day, but fun!

I really appreciate the perspective. I gave this a lot of thought last night. Most of the problem was that the women were in showgirl costumes that would make a Barbie doll look pudgy. Of course they didn't look good, they were stuffed into very unflattering costumes. I'm still not sure where I stand on the issue. Is fat inherently ugly or is it the way a person carries and takes care of themself?

I think of a woman like Queen Latifah. To me she's beautiful and I don't think she needs to lose an ounce to be attractive. But, I also have several friends who have gained weight and are less attractive than they once were. I think you make an excellent point about self-care, becuase a lot of the friends, and myself as well, stop dressing quite as nicely or doing up their hair and makeup. It's harder to dress nicely in larger sizes--the bigger you get the more clothing starts to resemble a polyester tent!

I'm starting to think there's a tipping point, and by my highly unscientific estimate it seems to be around the size 16 mark. I know lots of women in the 12-14-16 range and yes, they're bigger, but I don't think they're inherently any more or less attractive. Once a person gets past that point it starts to seem like the fat takes over and makes a bigger impact on their overall appearance. At least that's my current theory.

I have a somewhat unique situation with my DH in that I was about 370lbs when I married him. I never doubt he finds me attractive because he liked the way I looked enough to marry me back then, and anything I do now just makes it better. Still, he has been appreciative of the changes, but I know a lot of that is due to me making more of an effort, seeing as how there isn't really a huge physical difference between 370 and 315 pounds.

Hi there!!!!

Sounds like you are having a great time!!!! Relax and don't worry about a thing!!!!

Keep up the great work!

Hi Pearlieq!!

Wow lots going on during your trip! I hope you keep having a good time!
I think you are exploring some good issues with your questions about your response to the dancers. It is a complex question and one I hope is not taking up too much of your trip!! hehe :) I know for me it is not about a person's size but their confidence and comfortability in their own skin. If a fat person is comfortable and confident I can find them attractive, but if they are obviously not happy and uncomfortable, not so much.
Enjoy your exploring, walking, and yummy Vegas treats! Oh, I wanted to add that I think we are definitely spoiled by Disney service, but then what's wrong with that??? hehehe!

Have a great night!
Mike :goodvibes

Take care, have a great time, and thanks pearlieq! :goodvibes

10/19/05

8:30am

--a few small handfuls of cashews
--a few small handfuls of M&M's :rolleyes1
--1 SB bar

I decided to take a leisurely morning today. DH had to be at his sessions at 8:00, but I had nowhere to be until lunch at 12:30. So, I slept it, read, and took a nice long bath in the soaking tub.

I finally got around and went to check out the hotel spa. It looked nice, but it was outrageous! They wanted $110 for a 25 minute massage and $175 for a facial. I don't think so! I did see the pool while I was down that way. It looked nice--I think I'll head there tomorrow morning. Eventually I started making my way to the conference center at Mandalay Bay. I checked out a few of the shops along the way and explored a little of the hotel. All in all it was a very relaxing morning.

12:00pm

--1 1/2 cups tossed salad w/ranch
--1 1/2 medium pieces cornbread
--1 pkt butter
--2 T bean salad
--5 roasted potato wedges
--1 sm cob of corn
--1/3 cup green beans
--2 bites pecan pie
--1/2 cup apricot peach cobbler w/vanilla ice cream

This looks like a heck of a lot more than it really was! While everything was tasty, you may notice I'm missing an actual meal here. There as some kind of snafu with the meal request and they weren't notified they'd need any vegetarian meals. D'oh! I made do, but this didn't stay with me for long. I did enjoy chatting with some of the other conference attendees. I really appreciate the kind of people who can strike up friendly conversations with strangers. They really add a lot of joy to the world, in my opinon.

After lunch I caught a cab to Bally's and got my ticket for the Behind the Scenes tour for the Jubilee stage show. The tour was really pretty cool. We were escorted by one of the dancers--our guide was a man named John who'd been in the show for about 4 1/2 years. They took us up on stage and showed us some of the props and the big moving elevators that make up most of the show stage. Then they walked us back to see the quick change rooms which are about the size of a walk-in closet. At any given time there are three performers and dressing assistants in there getting everyone in and out of their costumes. We got to see the costumes--they're certainly something else! They kind of look like what would happen if you let a 6 year old loose with a Bedazzler. They were nothing if not eye catching!

We also got to see the dressing rooms, tailoring rooms, and the headgear storage. The heaviest of the headpieces weighs 35 lbs. The woman who wears it has to run off stage, down 2 flights of stairs, change her costume, don that monster of a headpiece, and then run back up 2 flights of stairs in high heels to get back on stage for her number! The most interesting thing I found out is that the starting pay for one of the chorus members is only about $30,000 per year! They put on 2 shows a night, 6 night per week, plus rehearsals, fittings, and public appearances. It's kind of jarring to realize that to most of the dancers it's just a job to pay the rent. I mean, I'm sure they like to dance and are happy to be doing it, but it's still a clock-in, clock-out kind of thing to them.

3:30pm

--buffet at Paris

This really wasn't supposed to happen. I was pretty hungry by the time the tour ended and I figured I'd walk around Paris and find a snack while enjoying the scenery. I came up on the buffet and their crepe stand, which are directly across from each other. I took a look at the buffet offerings and I thought I saw that it was $12.95 for lunch. The crepes were $7 each plus another $2.50 or so for a drink. So, I figured that I'd spend almost as much on a crepe and soda as I would for the whole buffet and I'd heard the buffet was good so I decided to try it. Oops!

It turns out I must have read the sign incorrectly as the buffet was $17.95. Ouch! Also there really wasn't much in the way of veggie offerings. I did really well navigating the buffet. I only took one or two bites of things I was interested in and I stopped eating them if I didn't enjoy the first bite. I had a few bites of assorted potato dishes, some broccolini, spinach au gratin, a few bites of pasta and pasta salad, some marinated mozzarella and tomatoes and most of a spinach and cheese crepe. I splurged most on 3 thin slices of fresh french bread and butter--it was awesome!

I took a look at all of the desserts, but nothing really jumped out at me as a must-have, which was odd because it was practically an orgy of different desserts and each was prettier than the next. I did sample a yummy cookie, a medium blueberry muffin, and taste of some kind of crisp pastry. I might have gone back for more, but my attention was diverted by the gentlemen sitting next to me. They asked me if the crepes were good and we got to talking. The one was from Baltimore and the other from Poland. It was his first visit to the US and he's here for a month and pretty much doing a crash-course on the US. They'd explored the northeast, spent a week in Chicago, were now here in Vegas and were planning on going to the Grand Canyon and Orlando. It was fun comparing notes on their travels and experiences here in Vegas. We passed several pleasant minutes talking and by the time we were done I didn't really feel compelled to get back to the dessert offerings.

I left Paris and headed across the street to the Bellagio. As luck would have it I arrived just in time to catch the water ballet. This one was to "All that Jazz" and was lots of fun! After the show I went into the hotel and went to check out the Conservatory. It was quite an explosion of fall! They had made a water mill and a cottage out of plants and flowers and had other large displays in the most lush, intense fall colors. It really is quite a work of art! After that I made it back outside to catch the next water ballet. This one was to Rodeo, which has been ruined by commercials and is now know as the "Beef. It's what's for dinner" song. You know exactly the one I'm talking about. Again, the show was amazing!

I was pretty tired by then so I hopped a cab back to the Luxor. I didn't really want to just sit around the room until the party started, so I bought a ticket to see the Wild Safari 3D IMAX film. In retrospect, this was a bad idea. The frame of the film was that we were going on a game drive through 4 game reserves in South Africa to see elephants, water buffalo, rhinos, leopards, and lions. Unfortunately, they seemed to do a lot of the filming by strapping the IMAX camera into a Land Rover with a driver and filming from that perspective. The combination of the bouncing and the 3D images caused a lot of people, myself included, to get pretty nauseated. I had to take off my glasses during the motion parts or I seriously would have booted my lunch there in the theater! The still shots of the animals were pretty neat. They were able to get really close to the elephants and it was really interesting to watch their behavior. Their trunks are so fascinating! They managed to catch up with a pair of leopards that had met up for mating. Did you know that when leopards get together to mate they will do the deed up to 100 times over 3 days! They don't hunt, eat, or sleep while they're together. Talk about devotion to duty! Watching the lions and leopards really made me miss my kitty beasts. I can't wait to get home to see them!

Once the show was over I went back to the room to get ready for the party. I had brought along a cute black top and a nice pair of jeans. I did my eye makeup pretty dark and blew out my hair so I had kind of a dramatic look going on. The piece de resistance, though, was my cranberry colored Mary Kay gloss. It's the perfect red for me--intense without making me look like a clown. I felt pretty good about myself as I left for the party!

7:45pm

--1/4 cup mashed potatoes
--1/4 cup white rice
--1 small white roll
--1 6" tortilla
--1/2 cup shredded cheddar
--2 T sour cream
--1 T salsa
--1 cup ice cream w/strawberry sauce and crushed heath
--4oz of a amaretto stone sour

I hate to say it, but the party wound up being an exercise in bad event planning. They had plenty of food and beverage stations, and the food looked wonderful, but the only veggie options were plain rice, mashed potatoes, bread, and some of the condiments! There wasn't a single entree! The funny thing is was they had an Asian station with a dish of stir-fried bok choy, but they did it in beef broth!!! How hard would it have been to offer one veggie option? They asked about it ahead of time and DH did indicate I was a vegetarian. What gives? I did not wind up eating a very healthy selection of foods.

Aside from the food, their main event, the Gigadrome challenge, was not well planned or executed. They spent tons of time promoting the event. They had Jamie from Mythbusters design and build these "Gigadrome" machines and there was supposed to be some kind of contest between them at the party. They encouraged people to sign up to be part of it--the implication was you could drive or control the machines.

So fast forward to the party. There are 3700 attendees to this conference. It turns out only 16 people, chosen at random, were going to be allowed to drive the Gigadromes. Another 80 people were chosen to be "crew", but didn't really have anything to do. So, of all these people and all the hype, less than 3% actually get to participate in any way. They had set up an arena in the event space with stadium seating for maybe 800 people, tops. So, of course it was a madhouse of people pushing and shoving and squeezing in everywhere while trying to balance their drinks and food. Once they've squashed as many people as they could in the arena, they bring out the Gigadromes. These things looks just like those rounded fiberglass bumper cars they have at carnivals. :confused3 There was absolutely no "wow" about them.

The "challenge" was the last straw. It turns out the cars were supposed to race through a series of 8 cones without knocking them over. Wow. That's a real nail-biter. But even worse was these things had a top speed of 4mph. It took about about 90 seconds for each car to run the 40 foot course. So, you know, it was super exciting. Most people gave up at that point--there was a huge exodus from the arena after the first match, DH and I included.

I know the event planners tried--the food did look delicious, the lines weren't too bad, the open bar was generous, and they set up a bunch of seating areas with games and other fun things. It was just a big disappointment for this hardcore geek crowd for the main event to be so...lame, for lack of a better word. We didn't stay for more than about 45 minutes.

9:00pm

--1 veggie burger on whole wheat w/mozzarella
--2/3 serving zucchini fries

We went back to that Burger Bar we tried yesterday. I'm really in love with their veggie burger! The zucchini fries were great as well, though I'm sure I could have done without them. They had a wonderfully spiced crumb breading, and tasted a lot like my beloved cheese sticks. It was a great meal!

We made a beeline back to the room once dinner was over. DH is now fast asleep and I'm about to join him!

10/20/05 - I get to see my kitties tomorrow!

9:30am

--1 spinach, tomato, and cheese omelet
--2 pieces sourdough toast w/1 1/2 packets jam

I decided to get out this morning and I headed over to the Hark Rock Hotel to have a peek around and get breakfast. The memorabilia was really cool. I can't believe how tiny the costumes are! Do people really fit in there?

Breakfast was tasty and afterwards I headed across the street to a shop that specializes in wide shoes. You'd be amazed at how hard it is to find a selection of wide shoes. Usually you're lucky if there's one or two types, and they're usually both grandma shoes. There was an embarassment of choices at this store. I finally picked out a pair of dressy shoes. They're black heeled sandals--they have straps that cross at my ankle and toe straps with sparkly beads. They have a low kitten heel and they're by far the cutest shoes I've owned in a long time. It feels so nice to be getting back to myself--having nice clothes and shoes and working to look nice. It's a fun part of me to rediscover.

12:30pm

--2 large slices French/Italian sandwich bread
--2 slices american cheese
--3/4 cup tossed salad w/ranch
--2 bites each pasta salad and tomato salad
--1 small pickle
--1 sm slice carrot cake
--1 sm slice cheesecake with strawberry sauce.

Again, not much to pick from on the veggie front, but I did OK. I've been working hard on this trip to really slow down my eating. It took me almost 40 minutes to finish all this and I was much more satisfied at the end than I would have been otherwise.

DH is back at his last conference sessions and I'm not sure what I'm going to get up to this afternoon. I had thought about going to the Fashion Show Mall, and I still might, but I'm kind of tired. I actually timed the walk from DH's conference back to our hotel room. I left there at 1:16pm and I did not get back to the room until 1:34pm!!! I'm certainly not worrying about missing workouts!

Regardless of where I go, I'm pretty sure I'm going to hit the pool later this afternoon when the sun goes down a little. This is the first warm sunny day we've had and I want to enjoy it!

4:00pm

--5 or 6 honey roasted cashews
--1 pkt Ritz cheese sandwiches
--2 T M&Ms

Finally the end of the M&M's! This was a nice snack that hit the spot. So far it's been a quiet afternoon, but I'm on vacation so that's perfect!!!

7:00pm

--Luxor dinner buffet

I'd say this was medium-indulgent. I didn't go nuts but I did have some treats, probably more than I "should". Still, I feel OK about it.

I'm enjoying this so much, the being OK thing. I've spent the last few months wrapped up in this horrible cycle of coming up with unrealistic plans and goals for myself, then failing, then feeling terrible about myself, then coming up with these unrealistic plans and goals for myself... It feels so good to just be OK. To not worry about it. To make decent choices that might not be perfect but that at least aren't covered in self destructive self-loathing. I've really been touched lately by things that I've read in Christin's and April's journals. This is not a race. There is no timetable. Every day is about treating myself well and being healthy. This should be a journey driven by love for myself, not disdain and hatred.

I think I'm going to take down my ticker. While I love it and it's cute, I need to be thinking about this in a different way. This isn't about goals and how long it takes to get to a certain point. This is about living better and becoming a better person. If I starve and beat myself down to 300, yes, I will get to move my little fishy to end of the ticker, but what have I really accomplished? I'm going to start recording in an open ended format of just X pounds lost, because that's where I need to be right now.

************************************************
Wow, anyway, back to our regularly scheduled journal thread.

After dinner we headed up and played a little bit in the arcade before the show began. The show itself was a lot of fun. The group is called Toxic Audio and they do their entire performance using only their voices--no backup tracks and no instruments. They incorporated a lot of humor into their show. For one number they pulled an older lady out of the audience and seated her on the stage. The rest of the group members sat with her and they passed around a remote control. Each time one of the singers changed the channel the group did another TV theme song. However, when the remote was passed to the lady from the audience, the group acted like she had changed it to the "blue" channel, and did the cheesy music and sound effects while pretending to be horrified. It was just hysterical. They also did a riotous and very innovative verson of "Lime in the Coconut"! I'm very glad we went to see them.

DH is now down playing poker and I think I'm going to finish packing and go take one last soak in the tub. Less than 24 hours until I see my kitties again!!!

Hi Pearlieq!!!

Glad to hear you see the kitties soon! I am sure they miss you!! :)
Sorry to hear the conf did not deliver the best veggie options for you!! But does sound like you had a nice trip overall, I am glad. :)

Have a great night and safe travelling home!
Mike :goodvibes

Good morning, Pearlieq! :cool1:

It's a little cool back here. All in all, I think you have navigated through Vegas very well. Even though you were not adhering to a strict routine, your mind was still concious of your choices. You have come a long way in your journey and have made some excellent progress.

I will talk to you when I get back.

Have a good flight home! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

10/21/05 - East or West, Home is Best

Our last morning in Vegas. We've got to be packed and out of the room by 11am. After that I think we're going to head toward the MGM Grand, find some brunch, then try to get in at the CBS research center. We have to leave for the airport around 2:30 or so to catch out 4:40pm flight. The whole flying process is really such a hassle, but I can't wait to get home to my kitty beasts!

10:45am

--1/2 packet sour cream & onion chips

DH and I got over to MGM without incident, but there really wasn't anything open and the buffet line was very, very long. We decided we'd sign up for the early test screening at the CBS Research Center and then look for meal options afterwards. We split this bag of chips just to stave off hunger pangs for the past hour.

There was some confusion about the time we were supposed to be at the screening and we wound up 3 minutes late. One of the attendants tried to get us in but the Survey Nazi inside wasn't having it. No research for you!

The finally worked out whatever the problem was and let us in, but the Survey Nazi did not get any nicer. She kept barking out instructions and yelling at people who deviated. She finally cued up the test show--Flight Attendant School. I thought they were joking! I thought it was like some kind of Satuday Night Live-type paraody. Nope! Painfully serious. Ugh. The show tried desperately to create drama and a compelling story but just fell flat. It was a very painful 45 minutes. I really hope this doesn't make it to screen. Still, it's always fun to preview new shows and give an opinon.

12:00pm

--MGM grand buffet

This one was medium-heavy indulgent. I ate a lot, but did a pretty good job giving up food that I didn't want to finish and restraining what I took to begin with.

After lunch we headed through the MGM lion habitat and then picked up souveniers for some friends back home. By the time we were done with that it was time to head to the airport.

The airport experience was predictably miserable. I don't know what the problem with the TSA people at the Las Vegas Airport, but the last few times I've been there they've been absolutely dumbfounded by our 3rd seat. They check the tickets, look at us, check the tickets again and can't seem to grasp why we'd have another ticket. After being questioned over and over by this one lady in the security line who just didn't get it I finally snapped a little. She asked (for the nth time, by the way) "But why are there 3 tickets and two of you. What's the extra ticket for?" and I finally just fired back "For my big, fat behind!" That shut her up pretty quickly and got us through the line. The lady was awfully lucky that I'm not painfully embarassed by this or anything, because she was so dense and insensitive!

5:00pm

--2 Fig Newton bars
--1 100 cal pkt wheat thins
--2 oz cashews

Snacks on the plane. The flight was pretty uneventful. We were about 15 minutes late, which is not bad at all.

We got back to Midway, picked up our bags, and met the limo only to find we'd been assigned a share again! Ugh! This one was way out of our way--she lived in Batavia and we're in Montgomery! It was a half an hour out of way and it was after midnight! We weren't thrilled and will be taking it up with the limo company.

1:00am

--good size bowl of cheerios
--2 sm cheese quesadillas

There was no food in the house and all the pizza places were closed by the time we finally got home so I scrounged for what I could.

There was a joyous reunion with the kitties and then we all went to bed!

You're making me miss Las Vegas. We stayed at Bally's and would eat breakfast at the cafe in Paris every single morning. It sure could get crowded.

Your description of the show at the Stratosphere had me laughing. The reason the show is free with the price of a drink is that if you have several the show actually starts looking good! Don't tell me you didn't wear your beer goggles to the show. No wonder it looked so tacky!

I loved reading your descriptions of your Las Vegas trip. It makes me want to go back again. Have a safe trip home!

Pearlieq- I just wanted to come here and say how much I appreciate what you posted in my journal. I can't tell you how nice it was to read that. I've been feeling a bit out of sync lately with a lot of my friends whose comments just make me feel worse, but what you said was so nice and so helpful. And I'm thrilled if something I said made a difference for you as well.

I'm glad you had a good time in Vegas! :)

Oh reading all the fun makes me really want to go back. We used to go every year, but we have not been back in 2 years. Oh how I want to go back!!! I am glad that you had a good time. I bet the kittys were glad to see you!

Keep up the good work. Hope you had a great day!

--2:00pm

--1 veggie and provolone sandwich at Jimmy Johns
--1/2 bag barbecue chips

4:00pm

--1 large bowl Cheerios

5:15pm

--1 Boca burger, no cheese

7:00pm

--green salad with cheese, croutons, and ranch
--3 2"x2" squares of veggie lasagna
--2 small slices garlic bread
--1 sm slice apple pie
--3/4 cup apple pie ice cream.

We had a very nice dinner at our neighbors house. It's kind of jarring to see the difference in life between people with kids and childfree adults. When we have a dinner party it starts around 7 or so and usually goes to 11 - 12pm. When we eat with our friends with kids we start at 6pm and we're always home before 9pm! Different worlds!

The one thing I was a little bummed with tonight was that the parents seemed pretty intent about keeping the kids away from us. They were shooed away to go play upstairs and then fed in a separate dining room. I don't know if they thought they were being polite, or thought we wouldn't want to hang with the kids, or just needed a break from them themselves, but I was kind of disappointed because I really enjoy their kids. Either way, it was a very fun night!

DH is now happily playing and watching poker at the same time, and I'm trying to get caught up on some email and other things I missed last week.

11:00pm

--1/2 med cheese pizza
--1 large Snickers

So when I though about getting home and getting back to the plan, this is not what I had in mind.

10/23/05

12:30pm

--1 reese's peanut butter cup
--1 sugar baby

My mom's got an ugly case of bronchitis and has been home recuperating all week so I went over there today and did some shopping and a few odd chores for her. We actually had a nice talk about a few things that were bothering me. Nothing like you mom to make you feel better, right?

4:30pm

--1/2 serving fettucine alfredo w/broccoli
--3/4 6" round italian bread
--1/2 green salad w/ranch
--1/2 piece chocolate cake

DH and I got a nice meal together this afternoon and actually got some time to talk. Things between us have been a little rough lately--mostly just feeling disconnected and doing a lot of sniping over home responsibilites. It was nice to be able to talk it out. We decided we're going to adjust our budget and rehire the cleaning folks. It's amazing how much conflict you avoid when someone else cleans the house! We'll have to make some sacrifices to make it happen, but nothing that can't be done. We're also going to try to find some things to do together. DH and I have very different personalities and, surprisingly, very little in common. DH isn't much of a talker so I think it's important for us to find experiences we can share. I feel a lot better having talked it over with him.

7pm

--1/2 portion of cheese dip
--2/3 sm box of reduced fat wheat thins

9:30pm

--the rest of my pasta
--sm piece bread
--the rest of my cake

It was a nice night. We watched some TV, watched the Sox win, and I caught up on some reading I had missed while out of town. A very peaceful evening!

10/24/05

--8:30am

--1/3 of 6" round of Italian bread
--6oz milk

This is going to be a heck of a day! I'm swamped with a big, complex work project and the timeline is pretty tight. Plus, there's a bunch of errands to run and calls to make and I had to be up very early to let the construction manager from our builder in to finish the last repairs on the house. I'm going to be so glad when this is all done!

7:00pm

--1/2 med cheese pizza
--1 carton Ben & Jerry's

Yeah, not a proud night. It was a heck of a day and by then I just didn't care. I honestly don't remember what I ate all day but I know it wasn't much. I can't wait for this dumb project to be done!!!

Good morning, Pearlieq! :goodvibes

Glad to see you made it home alright. Sorry to hear that the TSA agent gave you a hard time, but I can imagine that she was sorry she kept asking such a dumb question. But at least you are home and can get back to "normal".

Personally, I think you navigated Vegas very well. It's also great that you got to spend time with your mom and that you and DH found some time to talk. Communication is the biggest key in any relationship.

As for the friends sending the children off into another room, I wouldn't let it bother you although I can understand why it did. We get together with some friends who have the children eat in the kitchen while the adults eat in the dining room. At my house, we all eat together, but this is they way they entertain. The main reason they do it is because they crave adult conversation and it is the best way that they can get that from time to time. My guess is that your friends fall in the same situation.

Hope you can get your work done today. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Today's going to be another nose to the grindstone day at work. I'm just hoping to make a significant dent in what's left, but it doesn't help that the work is unpleasant and tedious. Still, it must be done!

I had an awkward conversation with our neighbor last night. She was watching our cats while we were gone and confessed she forgot about it on the first day. I talked to her the day before we left, and this had been agreed up for a long time, so I'm really not sure what to make of it. I know she's got a lot on her plate at the moment, but it seems like she's spinning out a little.

I appreciated her confessing, as I never would have known, and she did seem ashamed/remorseful for doing it, and the cats were of course fine, but I'm still a little appalled it happened. She's set up to take care of our cats through next summer and in exchange we're giving her DVC points to take her family on vacation, so I feel a little locked in to the arrangement. I guess I'll just have to make a point to call her the first day we're gone next time, to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Speaking of the cats, they had their own adventure yesterday! My blood pressure is nearly back to normal. Yesterday was a very busy work day and we also had a painter repairing some nail pops in the wall. Well, I was right in the middle of something when the guy finished and he said he'd let himself out. I didn't know anything was amiss until I got a call from my neighbor across the street telling me there were two cats on my porch!!! Yikes! Yesterday was a very windy day and the painter must not have shut the door all the way and checked that it caught. The door was open about 5-6" and there were my kitties, having a little field trip outside! Luckily Magellan came back in right away and Diana came in as soon as I opened the door and got out of her way. I can't imagine what would have happened if the neighbor hadn't seen them! We had a long talk last night about staying away from doors and not going outside. Well, I did most of the talking and they stared at me and waited for me to get the laser pointer out so they could chase the dot. :teeth:

********************************************************
I can't say I remember what I ate during the day yesterday. It was probably some very unstructured munching between crises.

Come afternoon I was feeling lot better and got myself freshened up and finally went to the grocery store. I got all sorts of yummy foods--fruit, salad, yogurt, bean burritos, popcorn, and sugar free ice cream. It feels nice to have food in the house again!

I got these amazing cookies from Natural Ovens. They're an oatmeal carob chips and they're wonderful. Each huge, hearty cookie only has 90 calories, 3 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of sugar! They were expensive beyond all getout, but they were wonderful!

Dinner was salad, spinach lasagna, and garlic bread. The college where my mom works has a culinary program and several times a year the students make a bunch of entrees and baked goods and sell them. My mom picked the lasagna up and gave it to us. It was awfully tasty!

I had some of the new Edy's Grand Light slow churned, sugar free mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert (wow, do they get a prize for the world's longest product name?!?). It was very, very good. Not as good as "regular" but good enough to enjoy as a light treat!
