A really short trip, have you ever?

Go for It !!!

Just finished our shortest trip ever. Flew from Detroit to Orlando Thursday night. Friday hung around the OKW pool then off to MVMCP around 4pm. Half of us Spent Saturday at Blizzard Beach (it was 82F that day!!) the other half went to Epcot for Candlelight processional. A monorail trip to see the Christmas decorations Sunday morning, then back to the airport to fly home. Three nights and it was Wonderful. My 3 night rental car was only 56.00 all in and scored a MiniVan to boot (there was 6 of us)

Some people looked surprised when I told them we were going to Florida for a long weekend. I said People go to Toronto (3.5 hours from us) for a weekend all the time. My flight was shorter AND less expensive then the Train to Toronto!!!

We've done a short trip before. Hit the parks at 10am on a Tuesday, left at 10pm on Wednesday. So just one night. We did all 4 parks too! Good luck and have fun! :)

GO! We picked up our dd and her friend at school at 1030 on a Thursday flew down from upstate NY that afternoon, spent 3 nights and flew home Sunday night. DW and I have gone several times Sat - Tue when the airfare is "right" and we need a fix! You won't regret it. Kids grow up too fast . . .that's why I refuse to grow up! Do It!

Yes its worth it . Well at least for us who have done this very thing . I left one year on a Friday at 12.00pm with my dd and drove 9.5 hrs to cb checked in for the night . We park hopped all day Saturday and then got up sunday morning and drove home . piece of cake .

Yes!

Going to Disney for your 13th birthday is Priceless. You both will always remeber it!

As an alternative: How would DS feel if you said "Here's $500 for your birthday, I'm taking you shopping?"

Presumably, there will be other trips to WDW, for longer periods?

A kid could get some cool stuff with that much money, and it would last longer than a weekend. :)

I can take him out of state without permission, but need permission to leave the country. Also, if he is going to miss any school, he needs permission.

I would love to leave Friday after school. Go to a park on Saturday, his birthday and then lounge around and swim and DTD stuff Sunday. Then watch the Super Bowl on property and come home Monday.

It would cost about $600 for the trip...

Is it worth it?
If the $600 isn't a big burden, it's worth it. The fact that you're thinking about it tells us the value to you.

It's not about money.

Toys are just toys.

I haven't found any "stuff" yet that lasts longer than memories.

The $600 isn't a deal breaker. We are fully renovating a home, so it could be used there.

However, I just look at 5,10,20 years from now the cost won't even matter, but the memories will.

He comes back tomorrow (NYE is our holiday this year to have him), so I am going to ask what we be an awesome birthday and see if this would even register to him as something he would want to do.

Shortest trip we had was actually our honeymoon. Got married on sat. Flew out sun. Went to the parks mon. Flew back home tues for the wife to be back for mandatory clinicals wed. Luckily I took her back two years later for a second honeymoon for 7 nights.
Short trips are fun if they mean a lot to the people who are going. I'm sure y'all will remember it forever.

He is my son from a previous relationship. (We have joint physical care. We have him 26 weeks a year.)

Many times he is not allowed to go on trips with us, as his mom won't allow him. He went on our DCL Cruise in 2010, but she has not allowed him to go on any since then.

I know he would enjoy it. I wouldn't tell him until the day we leave. I just don't know if its worth the cost for 36 hours.

Only you can decide the worth - but I took my DS for his 13th birthday - and he is 17 now and still talks about it. I picked up him and his best friend from school on a Friday afternoon, it didn't click until we got to the airport that we were going anywhere.

If the Mother has a reasonable bone in her body - she would go for that. She doesn't realize how lucky she is that you are still in his life - I know many that have walked away.

Toys are just toys.

Couldn't agree more.

My sister's grandson has only been to Disney once and it was a 2 night trip (1 full day). He's never forgotten it and she's never been able to take him back but the memory for both was stellar. Go for it.

As others have said the memories are the important thing, and the time you spend with him is priceless.:thumbsup2

I have two 20-something sons who just aren't able to go to WDW regularly anymore due to jobs, personal lives etc. They LOVED WDW that age. I sometimes wish I could wave a wand and have them be that age again for our Disney trips. So just do it - you won't regret it!

I have done 48 hour trips, totally worth it IMHO, cost more than my longer trips (dollar cost averaging) but are priceless just the same.
If you believe he would enjoy it, I say go for it!

I was talking to him today and he told me that the "experience" is better then the gift.

He mentioned going to a water park hotel with a friend or 2 as an example.

I need to get my wife on board with this plan and make sure that I have grandma lined up for the other boys. DW works Saturdays, so I need to make sure my bases are covered.

I see a $100 fare for Monday on a direct flight that would be awesome. We could watch the Super Bowl on Sunday night with a day of swimming.

I guess DW has to consent to anything, so we shall see.

January 2013, DD & I went down to Florida to look at a college. We arrived 11p, Friday night. Saturday we spent half the day at AK and half at MK. Went on the college tour Sunday morning. Spent the rest of Sunday at HS and EPCOT. We were on our way home Monday morning. We walked onto all the rides we wanted. We had an unbelievable wonderful time, we will never forget. :goodvibes

Magic is often what you make it.:wizard:

:thumbsup2 I agree the memories are so worth it!!! Oh how I miss those days!!!!

6+ years ago, SW had $49.00 flights in July so on a whim I booked one night at Saratoga and off my DD and I went down for her 12th birthday and the did the Mother and Daughter Spa Package at Saratoga, had dinner at her favorite restaurant - Spoodles and just relaxed at the pool. We left on a Wednesday, 7 am flight, arrived at Saratoga around 10:30 am and just had a blast and did so much in those 2 days. I think the insanity of going for just the 1 night made it even more fun. Thursday we took an 8:30 pm flight home...but the memories are for a lifetime. My one regret...I should have stayed two nights and not have worried about getting back to work for Friday -- should have called in sick.

Enjoy!!
