Just wanted to post some information on the Mountain Top Downhill Rainforest Trek Excursion provided by DCL on the Eastern Caribbean cruise. My sons ages 12 and 9 and I took this excursion this past Tuesday. It was billed as a "rainforest" trek where you could spot lots of interesting animals including monkeys and iguanas. My boys were VERY excited to see the animals. Needless to say, there were no animals....okay...we did see a green hummingbird for a split second, and he was cool, but no other animals.
Our guide was fantastic! We took a 30 minute bus ride from the Dutch side to the French side of the island. We saw the border and learned the history of the island. Donna, our guide, was from St. Martin and was extremely knowledgeable and amusing.....a great island tour! Then, we rode a 4 X 4 truck to the top of the "mountain". The views from the top were absolutely beautiful and then we started our trek. Thankfully, Donna gave us large bamboo walking sticks because the trail was very steep and treacherous. Lots of rocks and loose dirt along the way made the trail a little scary for the smaller children and older adults on the tour. We did see some beautiful old mango trees and a large kapok tree, but again no animals. The trek itself was two hours long and we were provided water to drink. Another plus, there were NO bugs!
So, all in all, if you would like a great island tour, a look at beautiful botany, and a thigh burning potentially ankle twisting or knee blowing workout in St. Martin, this is the excursion for you. If you're looking to see a real rainforest complete with monkeys and iguanas, you may want to see about Costa Rica.
