While this is not the debate board I thought it would be a good question to ask here. I asked a qusetion in another post and one of the replys got me thinking.

If you are in the parks should you put pins you are not going to trade on your lanyard?

I did. I actually got a lot of compliments and a ton of good conversations out of it.

I figure they are that person's pins. They can do with them what they will.
I wear what I want to trade on a lanyard. Any others I wear on my clothes. And I don't wear a lot of them. We do go on a lot of rides and I just don't want to lose the non-traders.

I wear my signature pin at the bottom of my lanyard. It is the Lady and Tramp 45th anniversary from DL. It is not for trade but everything else on my lanyard is fair game unless it is late after a day of heavy trading.

I always point out to anyone that asks that everything is for trade except the Lady pin and of course that is the one everybody wants.

Of course, I am very rarely stopped in the parks to see my lanyard. Usually I just get the once over as they slide by. How you can see what is on people's lanyard like that is beyond me? (of course that is different debate altogether) So I figure that most pins on people's lanyards are not for trade because they hardly ever stop to look and then trade.

I had a couple people come up to me and were kind of hostle because I had some very nice pins on my lanyard that I was not willing to trade.

I had just got off the cruise and was proudly displaying my DCL Halloween Cruise Line pin - and they were upset that I had it on my lanyard, but I was not willing to trade.

I have actually traded some of my pins that I thought I would never trade from my lanyard when someone would show interest.

I like to wear things that do stir up conversation - that is alot of the fun of Pin Trading.

I am not sure what is the right way to do this - sometimes I wear my traders on one side of the lanyard and my keepers on the other side.

I am interested in hearing what other people think of this.

I put some really cool pins on my lanyard due to the fact that I do a lot of PR work (no not Puerto Rican) for the meets.

You know The Contemporary meet every Friday night starts at 7:00pm ever hear of it. Or The Polynesian pin meets every Saturday at 7:00pm. (Shameless plugs live on)

Anyway yes it is a tease in a way, and I have felt very bad in several cases when a person has found a holy grail on my lanyard, and was disappointed only to find out it was not up for trade.

Some feel it’s a bait and switch tactic, but I’m not selling anything so how does that work out? I have gotten into many a squabble with other pintraders who feel that if they are on my lanyard, they should be up for trade.

Soooooooo rather than waste your time go through your book and tell you I found nothing that interested me, or offending you by telling you I’ll trade it for something your not willing to part with, I’ll just tell you up front these are my keepers, and not up for trade.

I even had a parent bring back a manager because I would not trade my Flubber for his sons rack pin, he insisted the manager tell me to trade. I was as polite as humanly possible sometimes people just don’t get it.

So with all the hassle why do I do it?

I am simply showing you my best pins for the following reasons, and again this are my reasons others may feel differently.

1 I’m a walking advertisement for Disney pin trading, and the pin meets, I put my best on my lanyard, I pick my most colorful pins, the ones that will attract the most attention for this very reason (remember I minored in sales and marketing)

2 Any pintrader new or old will be drawn to you like a magnet; no sorry I’m not trading these but let me tell you about the Contemporary pin meets. Shameless plug time.

3 I worked hard to get these pins, I use them as examples to educate the new pin traders out there on what was available, and which are good type pins to try and get.

4 It gives people a chance to see what these darn mystery pins look like, most people have never seen a Flubber or Wet Paint pin except on Pinpics. You would not believe the people that have said to me oh that’s what it looks like, I was way off, or I thought it was bigger than that.

5 It lets people know I have been at this for a while, and have some knowledge of what pins are worth, so you can be assured I wont trade a wet Paint for a Capt Mickey. (Yes I was asked this at Epcot) but can answer your questions.

6 It makes you feel good to see people point and whisper as you walk by; to me its say yea I traded well.

7 It a great way to break the ice and start a conversation with other pintraders, new pintraders, or somebody thinking to get started in pin trading.

8 I led a sheltered life, I’m way shy and I’m reaching out for attention (Me shy and in need of attention I don’t think soooooo Tim). It just great fun that’s all. Okay before the Caballeros grab on to it yes… I grew up in the Florida Keys so yes it was sheltered.

Just like Nat has his yellow page in his book, I have my blue lanyard and my black one as well, once you get past the black and reach the blue, you have just hit the not for trade section, thank you, but please feel free to look though.

There is a down side as well.

Somebody will find that Holy Grail and get crushed that wont trade it. Example Kathryn gave me my Wet Paint as a gift, you can offer me a Haunted Mansion Dangler for it, and I swear to you I’ll say no. A friendship means more to me than any pin.

People always think I’m a cast member, and want me to trade, this can viewed as good because it gives me a chance to explain pintrading and I’ll get some new friends out of the deal. There will always be that one person that thinks you are a jerk, but hey you can’t win them all.

Sharks will curse you and tell you trade it or put it away, if you notice some cast members that trade pins will sometimes put their Holy grails on their shirt collars, or on their ties.

Ride those rides and pins will break off and go flying, if your Holy grail goes flying off kiss it bye bye, and you have nobody to blame but yourself.

I have rambled enough… Lets see how the others feel about it.

I have seen this post before and I think it is a very interesting topic.

For the conventions, I wear both on my lanyard because there are some pins that I want to show off. I'm a big villains fan so those pins represent my personality. The nice people will usually admire the lanyard and ask if I will trade a pin. I have been yelled at when I've said no and I politely tell them that there is no "rule" that whatever is on a lanyard is fair game. Honestly, would they say that to a small child wearing Mickey ears or a tiarra? I'm not a cast member for goodness sake. It's my understanding that everything on their lanyards IS fair game.

For GWP days and others when I go to the park, I try to put traders on my lanyard so that I don't have to carry around a bag too. It's basically just for the sake of being easier.

I love this topic. I think we should do a whole pro/con, affirmative/negative thing.

It's kind of funny how the people who think all pins on display must be for trading seem to have forgotten why many (most?) people collect pins. How about because they enjoy them???!!! Essentially we are collecting jewelry - very macho jewelry, gentlemen - that was originally designed and created to be worn by a person, on a person. Lanyard, lapel, vest, hat, sox, boxers, I don't care where, you should be free to wear what ever where ever!

I personally think it is fun just to look at someones pins. I don't have much to trade with (but I'm getting there!) so I'm not looking to trade. Raulandpinboy is right, I really enjoy seeing pins I've heard of or read about in person - you keep wearing them!

The story about the woman who complained to a manager about your refusal to trade is amazing! Wouldn't it be a wonderful world is every person we saw HAD to give us whatever we wanted?!

"Hey fancy lady, I like that huge diamond ring you are wearing. You MUST give it to me in exchange for this plastic gumball-machine ring of mine. What? You aren't interested in trading? Then you shouldn't have the ring on your finger, lady!"

People are amazing...

Also, once I trade for a pin, I would put the *new* pin on my lanyard. So chances are it would not be a trader.
I would have it on my lanyard because I just traded for it. I wouldn't want to stash the newly traded pin away in a fanny pack just because someone else may wonder why I am wearing it.

Most of my pins on my lanyard are for trade. I usually have 3 that are not: my name pin, Vince's D.I.S. pin, and my Pinhook for President. When someone asks to look at my lanyard, I automatically say that those three are not for trade. I have occasionally traded a pin and put the keeper on my lanyard so as not to lose it, but I've never had any problem when I've said that a pin is not for trade.

Yeah you almost have to tell people right off the bat if there is something you don't want to trade on your lanyard. A couple of weeks ago we (my family) were in AK and started trading with someone from Japan and we did some good trades. My DH had left some of them on his lanyard because it was just easier at the time. He got stopped at least a dozen times in the next hour by people wanting to trade for one of those pins. He finanly just took it off and stuck it in his pocket because some seemed kind of hostle when you say "sorry, that ones not for trade"..

I would be one that thinks pins on the lanyard should be for trade. I can understand the need to put one s you have just traded on there but I don't like the lanyards that are "ALL" keepers (I have one that is not for trade that I wear. My DIS pin). At a private pin meet I can but not when you are waliking in the park looking to trade.

I do like Darlenes idea. One side keepers on side traders... Not bad the next time I don't bring my book. Thanks for the idea...:)

How are you doing anyway??

Back to the question..I think what we do is "Pin Trading"...not... I want that pin, and because you have it on your lanyard
you have to trade me for it now...

People frame their pins to show them off...I would feel really silly and get pretty tired carrying a frame around my neck to let
people know that these are the ones I have worked hard for, and am proud of them..

Even if you walk around w/ traders on one side, and keepers on the other, and you have had a great trading day, and all your traders are gone.. .does that mean that you can't show off any of your new "finds" and have to walk around w/ a lanyard empty
on one side, so God forbid you don't have to explain that these are all keepers???

Maybe we all need to have a little self control, and if a fellow pin trader tells us that his lanyard contains all his keepers, we should
just admire them, maybe drool a little, congratulation him for getting the holy grail you are still searching for, steer him to
the next pin meet (one more chance), and be on your way..

After all, we the ones that are supposed to be setting the "pin Etiquette" standards..

Don't forget to attend Scoops pin seminar at 1:00 pm most days at the Expo Hall at MK...he answers this question..

Okay this is going well... I like to hear everyones input and to hear from some new voices.

EXCEPT R&P's Wet Paint!

I sometimes wear pins I fully do not expect to trade (HM Dangle, Champs), but I feel rude if I say "Not for Trade." Instead, I say EVERYTHING'S for trade... for THE RIGHT THING! You never know what somebody could have up their sleeve. If the VP of WDW walked up with his Grandkid who just fell in love that Wet Paint gift pin and said,"Would you trade? Here's one I had made for WDW VPs. There's only 25 of these. Oh, and Michael Eisner and Roy Disney wear the ones I gave them all the time, too." How could you say no?

I'll also wear Hot New Scarce pins, e.g. Cruiseline Christmas pin, but not on my lanyard. If it's not on my lanyard, I don't mind saying no. But I really believe lanyards are, by design, for trading. Otherwise, why not just wear them. Isn't that what you do with decorative pins?

I always wear two lanyards.
One is my black lanyard. On this lanyard I put any pins that I have for trade. Some are LE that I wear to get the attention of those who are trader/collectors, some are common rack pins. I still have to thank John59 for getting me started with giving pins to children. I especially love for them to look at a pin they really love and want, and try to pick something off their lanyard to trade with me. Then when they place their pin in my hand I give them the pin they want and the pin they were trying to trade. I tell them it is a gift because they understand about trading and someday they can share with others like I am sharing with them.
The other is my Lime Green DIS lanyard that Scott sent me a long time ago. On that lanyard I wear all my "Peggie" name pins, my Dis Member 2000 and 2001 (Parkhopper, are you making a 2002 edition???), My James and the Giant Peach and My Seal of the Peachident. and of course my 2 three Caballero pins. I use this lanyard to put the pins that I have traded for during that day. I take off my newly aquired pins each evening after returning to my room for the night. I always tell people that the Green lanyard is not for trade but I will tell stories about what the pin means to me or how and what I traded to get the pins on the lanyard.
If someone is really interested, I offer to show them my pin bag where I have the rest of the pins I have for trade.
I try not to put "killer" pins on either of my lanyards. If I make a trade for a pin that is considered "good" I put that into my pin bag. Not only do I not want people to get angry because I won't trade it, but I would hate to lose it. Been there, done that.

But I do have to say, I was in Epcot with a group of traders in November and one of them had on their lanyard with some really great pins. I actually saw someone circle our group three times not saying a word to anyone. He never took his eyes off that lanyard. Now I know what it feels like to be circled by a shark. It really was funny. Even though I have seen this discussed before, it still seems there is a lot left to be said, (especially by R&P, who methinks can ramble more than me, and I have been know to ramble on these boards--and he will probably say in person too!)

Despite the attestations of a few kind people after my last trip, I really consider myself still a "small fish", and in this only 6 months, still a "newbie", so my perpestictive is of one still learning about this hobby. 6 months into it, I now know what some of those "big" pins are, and if I see a bunch of them on a trader's lanyard, I can pretty much figure they are either not for trade, or they are for trade for something way beyond what I have. But right from the beginning, for me and my kids, a lot of the fun was getting to look, and "ooh" and "aah" over some of these very beautiful, and hard to find, or EVER see pins! Before we knew about pin meets, and trading centers in the parks, all we knew about, was lanyards, so how else would we have seen some of these pins that sparked our expanding interest in this hobby? It's like looking at art--it has to be hanging somewhere for me to be able to look at it, and admire it, and I certainly don't expect to be able to take it home from the gallery or the museum.

Another point to consider, that Donna touched on, is what to do with these pins, once we have them? I am still struggling heavily with the costs involved in this hobby, and I often find myself wondering what is the point of spending all this money to buy these little pieces of metal, that are actually little pieces of Disney art? I, too, am not interested in framing them and hanging them on my walls; there is no room for that, as my house is already decortated, and it's not decorated Disney. So, I can put them in books, and look at them myself, which is ok, but like clothes or jewelry, or my decorated house, it is nice to be able to share and yes, "show off" so to speak what we have acquired, and have other people be excited with us for what we have. Both of my boys have very nice collections for just starting out, but they have virtually nothing to trade. They are proud of their collections, and their collections actually say something about their personality, so it's natural they want to wear them, and where else can they do that except at WDW? Jeff isn't going to wear it to his high school, and if Ryan ever gets a job, I don't think it will fit in the office attire!

So, after much rambling (told ya) I think 2 lanyards, or half keeper/half trader, are definitely 2 good options. And as far as just wearing to show off, there is no reason, new traders--children AND adults, can't learn that some people choose not to trade, just as they have to learn other pin trading rules, and etiquette.

P.S. usually by time I'm done rambling through my post, the topic is dead, and nobody reads it anyway!

I don't usually wear my keepers on a lanyard for one reason - I'm paranoid that they will fall off :earseek: !! You guys should be grateful too.. you are the ones that would have to listen to it for the next month if I did loose one of my favorite pins! :D ;)

I don't have a problem with people filling their lanyards with keepers. I like seeing their collections! In fact, I have learned the history of pins I found on lanyards 2 years ago and haven't seen since by seeing them on people's "keeper" lanyards and books and asking about them.

It's really funny that people seem to have the idea that because it's on a lanyard that it HAS to be tradeable. Even if they were tradeable, there is no guarantee that you would have just what they wanted in exchange for that pin!

Also, like Scoop said - what you might have thought wasn't tradeable might suddenly become tradeable if the right pin came along (ok..EXCEPT for Raul's Wet Paint and my CCT and WDWPTP).

Okay, moral of the story... don't assume that just because a person is wearing a lanyard full of hard to find keepers that they are showing off.. you just might be missing out on meeting a really cool new pin friend!
