Bernardo was a Shark, Riff was a Jet, and Tony had been a jet but left the gang and was working in Doc's drugstore when he met Maria.

Tony was a Jet, but he was making an attempt at being responsible, so he got a job and quit the gang. I LOVE West Side Story. Nothing like watching a bunch of street gang members break into song and dance during a rumble.
