A question for the ladies

Do you have maintenance guys come to your house while you are home alone? it’s time for the water softener yearly maintenance to be done. I can’t be there as we are working 6 days a week. Usually 12 hours mon to Friday than 8 hours Saturday. So I made a appointment when my wife is going to be off. She is all mad saying you know how dangerous it is. No it’s not dangerous you think a maintenance guy is going to come to someone’s home and the lady is home alone and rape her or something. I’m sure it happens like everything happens but a very very slim chance of it happening like one in a million. I’m going to cancel the appointment to make my wife happy but she has nothing to be scared of. Nothing bad has happened in her past so I don’t know why she is acting this way.

It's never been a problem for me to have people come when I'm home alone.

Majority of maintenance workers wear a company shirt with logo.
Also name tags are common.
I often get emails from companies with the persons name and photo of who will be at my doorstep.

I’m always home alone when service men come to the house and I’ve never had a problem. The only time I want my DH to be there is when something technical needs to be discussed that I know nothing about.

I don’t even like them coming in my house when my husband is here. I would NEVER let someone in when he was gone. I have two little girls winch makes me trust people even less. My cousin was raped, abducted and murdered when she was a teen and home alone. Regardless, I don’t think it’s ok for her to feel scared or uncomfortable in her home. It’s very different being a woman. Just reschedule it.

I agree with your wife.
If I have to be alone, I’m on the phone the whole time with someone who knows the situation and my address and can call 911 for me when they hear screaming.

Doesn't bother me to be alone with a serviceman but then I did use to walk from the "El" to Union Station in Chicago by myself when I'd take the train back and forth to and from home in my college days. Chicago might have been safer back in the 70's tho. :scratchin

I have been a single woman on my own, a single woman on my own with children, and a married woman with children. I have never been attacked in my home by a maintenance worker. I'm usually ok with them coming in to do work, provided I know they are coming ahead of time, and that they are from a reputable company.

I did feel creeped out by a roofing guy who came once, to do an estimate, and I requested he not come into the house (only the garage where the damage was) and made my husband stay home that day, so he could deal with him. He was the owner, of the small roofing business, but that didn't make him any less creepy. I guess when a man calls me "little lady" and talks to my chest, it makes me uncomfortable....

I have no issue with being home alone when workers come, as long as I know who's coming, and they have the correct ID/paperwork. But, as mentioned, if your wife does, you should listen to her.

Everyone has their own comfort level for things.

I've been home alone with a maintenance worker many times, but I try to respect other people's personal anxieties.

I know they're not always easy to find in some locations, but maybe your wife would be more comfortable if you hired a female contractor.

Yes I have had people over while I'm alone.

Our house was completed in Sep 2014, for our 11 month inspection my husband was away in TX so I dealt with all the stuff by myself. Additionally when I lived in apartments when I was in college and after I graduated and at times had people in for inspections, repairs, replacements, etc.

I can understand if she's uncomfortable with it though I guess I would wonder if something sparked it (not saying something actually happened but maybe she read a story or a person she knows or whatever) unless she's just never been alone for maintenance so it's making her anxious?

I’m a divorced mom of 3. Thanks to Covid and everyone being home, I haven’t yet been alone with workers (had cable internet issues and my well pump go this year). I tend not to reveal that I am single. I’m also pretty knowledgeable about the stuff in my house now. I’d be annoyed if I was talked down to or if someone tried to upsell me.
