I have been an off and on runner. Recently, I have gotten serious about it and am enjoying it ... however, my body is not.

I am much better at reading a book about a subject ... so I was wondering if anyone could suggest a book about running for beginners (I would love to run a 1/2 marathon someday, but I need some sort of guidance.) Thanks in advance! :goodvibes

Here are some good beginner books:

The Courage to Start
No Need for Speed
Marathoning for Mortals - all three by John Bingham (aka The Penguin)

Running for Mortals - John Bingham & Jenny Hadfield

Galloways Book on Running - by Jeff Galloway

There are a whole slew of books out there for women beginning to run. They have lots of advice which I cannot personally judge, so I am a little hesitant to recommend any of them specifically.

Also, head on over to the WISH forum here on the Disboards - plenty of runners there, with lots of advice.

I second Marathoning for Mortals.

And, if you want more inspiration than instruction Born to Run is a wonderful book!

I liked John Bingham's book Marathoning for mortals. Even if you don't run a half or full marathon, it has great beginner's information.

I trained for my second marathon using it. (I had coaches for my first one through Team in Training.)

Thank you TRIMOM. That book looks great also. I need all the help I can get as far as dealing with the physical aspects of training. I don't get out of breath, my legs are just weak and the next day my joints are hurting just a little too much. I am only running 2 miles at this point, but I can only run every other day. Hoping the books will help. Thank you again!
