Free masons are elusive, and some would claim that this is the whole point. Oh, they say on their website to contact your local lodge for membership, but just try and get someone to return you phone call. Ha! My poor hubby's had his hopes dashed more than once by this.
You have to know a Mason to join a lodge, and it used to be that they could not actively solict members- you had to ask to join. I know that the Grand Lodge in PA no longer has the 'must ask' rule (and they also changed the age from 21 to 18). Each state has its own Grand Lodge that sets the rules though, so this may or may not be the case where you are. Your husband's best bet is to ask a known Mason how to join.
And remember the officers of the Lodge are not paid (usually) and most have full-time jobs as well as their Masonic duties. It makes for a busy but rewarding life. Tell your husband to be persistant.
