A question about the bathrooms...

Actually, showers to be a bit more specific. It's been a while, but I started a thread a while back asking about plumbing and why a plumber needs to know exactly what we're doing/using in the bathroom before he will/can do any do any work. Well, now I have another question, if I may be allowed to ask. My FiL thinks that since we're going with a tile shower, instead of a prefab one, that we need to tile the ceiling to prevent any mold or mildew. I've never seen a shower that had the ceiling tiled. And if he's worried about mold & mildew then that's what they make mold & mildew resistant paint. In fact, we had a problem in my current bathroom and after cleaning the ceiling I painted with mold and mildew resistant paint and I haven't had a problem since. So, my question is in 2 parts: 1) Does anyone here on the Dis have a tiled ceiling in their shower, and 2) If you don’t have a tiled ceiling, have you ever had, or did you have, a problem with mold & mildew without a tiled ceiling?

To answer my own questions; I’ve never had a place, be it either of the 3 houses my parents have owned, or the apartments/houses I’ve rented, where the ceiling in the shower was tiled…and no mold or mildew problem. I know my FiL is trying to do what’s right, but he can be a bit stubborn and I want to make sure I go in an argument with him with all the ammunition I can.

Thanks.

No and No. We use that mold/mildew resistant paint too. Seems to work fine.

No we don't have a tiled ceiling in our shower. The only one I've ever seen that did have was really really small. The ceiling was maybe 6.5 to 7' and the entire shower was tiled. I think it was because of the really low ceiling.

I've seen fully tiled showers (including ceiligns) in hotels and in some of my friend's homes. It's not that common though and mostly have been in steam showers.

My mom has two showers that are tiled on the ceiling and it's wonderful! The drywall ceiling never stayed as nice. Really, it's a higher end look and we used it during our own bathroom remodel. We also have a light/fan unit in the ceiling over the shower as well, which is great in a place with high humidity.

I've never had an issue with mold and have always lived in homes with tiled showers and regular ceilings. We have a spotlight over the shower but that's for lighting purposes only.

I'm thinking this is why he wants to do it, because the ceiling is lower than downstairs. I don't know, I just know I'm not a fan of it.

I had to go look! lol Mine is tiled onn the ceiling about the shower. I can snap a picture of it for you later if you'd like.

We have a tiled shower and a painted ceiling.

FYI, tiles collect mildew easier than paint... ;)

Yes. I've never seen a tiled ceiling in a shower, but I suppose they exist. I'd much rather install an exhaust fan if I were worried about mold and mildew.

I have seen tiled ceilings, but as others have noted, they are not very common. My shower is tiled and my the shower in the master bath at my parents' house is tiled. Neither have had problems with mildew on the ceiling. When I was still living with my parents, my bath was fiberglass and had a horrible mold/mildew problem on the ceiling.

i have a tiled ceiling in my bathroom and the shower area and half way up the walls outside the shower area. . And love it. So easy to keep clean. Also have a exhaust fan in also. It helps dry the walls quicker. And no mold or mildew problem

This :thumbsup2 DS has a stand alone shower in his bathroom and it is fully tiled - ceiling and all. I :lovestruc it. It looks so nice and I do find cleaning it easy. It's plenty big as well as they just framed out the space they wanted for it (we didn't build the house) and then tiled it in. It is actually, I would say given some experience when it was *our* bathroom, a 2 (;)) to 2 and 1/2 person shower. It also has the handheld shower which makes it a snap to clean.
