A place for those horse crazy DISers starring Daisy

Sherri, I have never heard of a problem like that before, I am fairly new to horses (about three years) and I nothing comes to mind. Where we board are a few experienced and knowledgeable boarders. It is one of the reasons why we board, as well as the fabulous trails and facilities. I'll ask around and see what others think at the ranch.

Sherri, I saw Pocket last Friday. He is doing well and Richard Winters gave us an explanation of his method while putting him through his paces - like when he puts on clinics. My DH says he got a two-er. Richard laughed. He said that Pocket has had some training, and needs to bring it out in him. I have always felt that he needed miles under the saddle. Richard has a good program and Pocket will come back in fine shape.

I am so glad Pocket is doing well...You are so lucky to have someone like Mr Winters so close!

Thanks any insight from anyone would be helpful

So Skye spins when the saddle is on, or when you try to ride with the saddle? Is she fine when you are saddled up but someone else is leading her?

I asked around today, but it seems more information is needed. A pure guess was that maybe the saddle is too small. It may pinch her only when you are sitting in the saddle. She may have gained a few pounds with her winter's rest or she may not have lost her winter girth yet. Which was my guess.

My DD's horse, Lena, does that. When winters are mild and she can get some riding done with Lena. But no matter how much she exercises her horse, she keeps that winter girth on. Then in the spring, it miraculously disappears.

Did you mention her age? Sometimes a horse will physically mature at about 7 or 8. Our horses were 5 when we got them. They are now 8 and we had to buy a saddle for Lena this year. She is a cutter, too and DD also trail rides with her. She muscled out of her saddle.

Anyway, just some thoughts on the subject.

Only spins when someone is in the saddle...but for example if DH is in the saddle and I am holding the reins she is fine.

She is coming on 5 years old this August. The going theory is her winter "off" time due to the injury (and the crappy weather) may have changed the way her saddle fits. We are going to saddle her up tomorrow (if it stops raining) and check the fit all over. I really don't want to buy a new saddle but after we try again with hers we are going to try my Sis in laws Saddle as her Gelding is bigger than Skye and then we will try Bullseye's as hers is slightly smaller and see how she does in other saddles that should determine if that is it.

My thoughts were in line with what Liza said. Have you tried a thicker Saddle pad? To kind of test if the saddle is pinching?

Ah yes, shopping for a saddle can be so much fun. As mentioned, we were saddle shopping earlier this year and what a joy that was. We ended up buying a saddle on a day we were not looking for one. We got a good price on the saddle at a horse expo like venue here in Los Angeles in February. We got lucky. We bought the saddle without sizing it on Lena. We figured we could sell the saddle for what we paid for it if it didn't fit our horse. We were very relieved that it did and it is a cutting saddle, too. DD loves it.

Hopefully you will find an easy solution to Skye's problems. You know horses though. If its not one thing than it is another. Keep us posted. I am curious what the outcome will be.

A thicker saddle pad has done wonders for Pocket's saddle. Just didn't fit quite right, but with the right saddle pad...perfect. They are expensive, but not as much as a saddle. And may help for the short term while she gets into shape with more exercise. That is if the problem is due to her inactive winter.

I'm more suggesting try anything thicker to see if the saddle is pinching even double the pads or blankets just to test it out. If not, yes, maybe she is barn sour.

Liza all that back & forth is the upside to boarding...but I so love havong them close.

We went out with the trainer Saturday and we added a 2nd saddle pad and she did great so saddle fit was the problem. He advised we ride with the 2nd pad for a while and showed us how to check so we would know when the saddle was back to the correct fit and we could get rid of the 2nd pad.

Yep, I thought a saddle pad would do the trick, although I didn't think you would need two. I was thinking more of buying a thicker pad. That is what I would have done (and wasted the money). I am glad that it was an easy fix for you. Saves you lots of money and the hassle of looking for another saddle.

Our horses are boarded very close to us. From door to stall is a 10 minute drive with lots of orange and avocado orchids along the way. Very scenic. In fact, the orange grove that you see on Soarin' was filmed very near where we live. I remember when DH and I went driving around Somis-Camarillo area and came across the orange grove featured on Soarin'. We turned a corner on top of a steep hill and started to drive down it. I looked up and thought that I have seen this view before. That was when I recognized the orchid. The moutains to the left in the back round of that scene are very close to Ventura and the boarding stable.

When you said Orange & Avocado Orchards I looked at where you are from for the first time. I grew up in the Ventura Area. My Dad lives just on the line before Ventura becomes saticoy. I went to Buena High. My first apartment when I married and had just one little girl was just on the Oxnard side of the freeway. Several of my brothers & sisters live in the area too.

Well then you know the area where I live. I didn't grow up here. I came from the SF Valley. My DH did and went to Buena, too. DD goes to VH and DH has a hard time saying "Go Cougars!" :rotfl2: If younger DD gets on the girls volleyball team when she gets to high school, he had better get use to it!

It really is a small world.

If an occasion pops up to go visit the family...maybe on the way to DL in October if we end up driving I will have to let you know so we can go do lunch or something...

That would be great. Just let me know. Of course, if you don't drive, we could always meet in DL, too. I'm always up to a trip to DL for any reason :).

I am going during the last week of October; 26th to the 29th. Just looked at the October check in thread and you are in DLR from the 10th to the 17th. I know that you have your daughter's wedding on the 31st. So I knew there wasn't a chance for Oct. Will be back in DLR in December; 18th to the 21st.
