A place for those horse crazy DISers starring Daisy

I am not surprised about the amount of damage a stallion will do to get to his mares. Too bad about having to find him a new home. He sounded like he had a great disposition.

I just learned that our ranch is getting a new boarder and one of their mares is expecting. I'm going to have a little foal to follow and see grow up first hand. I have witnessed a foal being born, but that has been a long time ago. Should be on the ground in May.

I finally got pictures of Pocket on Photobucket. He is a Paint, but has very little white, but he is registered as a Paint. He barely passed. Here are a couple of pictures.

The first two pictures were taken at the stables where we board him. We can trail ride into the back country you see in the pictures. The stable is located on a 7,000 acre working cattle ranch, and we have access to all the trails on the property. The bottom picture was taken at Richard Winter's place. He is a little excited. When we left, he was calling for us. I was told that he kept on running around the round pen, because the two other horses he rode with were in a bigger arena above him. He kept calling out to them. I got lucky when a fellow boarder just happened to be taking a lesson with Richard and offered to take Pocket up to him. Since we don't own a trailer, I jumped on it. I got extra lucky, cuz I was able to get a report from her after we left, since she was there for a couple of hours for her lesson.

He is beautiful and I am jealous of that ranch where you board it looks wonderful!

We have a "barely made it" paint in our herd too My Mom's Ginger is a red roan paint but isn't high color like Skye. she has a large amount of white on her face & legs as well as a sprinkling of white all over her.

I've been sick the last few days and have kind of been bed ridden so haven't been to the pasture but I am going out there tomorrow! I miss all the horses but esp Daisy as she is growing every day and I know I am missing stuff!

He is a beauty.

Thanks, Kaoden39. We certainly think so.

Why is his name not One Sock?

Are there lots of fences and gates on the ranch or can you stay on the horse and ride miles?

Too funny! His real name is Cowboy, but that is a very common name for quarter and paint horses. There were three "Cowboys" on the ranch when we got him. We wanted to change his call name and choose "Pocket" because he likes to walk behind you with his muzzle next to your hind pocket. Not really a good thing to have your horse do (they can spook, take off and run right into you).

The cattle roam in open wilderness areas. The trails are in the same areas the cattle roam. When we ride there are trails that have gates to keep the cattle in certain parts of the ranch. You are generally riding into back country or you can choose to take the fire service roads. Either way, you don't see very many fences the farther you go out from the stables. My DD rides two to three hour rides easily.

I can imagine it. When I was young I lived in the East Bay and hiked around Briones. I don't know if they are still there but much of that had cattle roaming it at the time.

Thanks Sherri. I hope you feel better enough to get out and see Daisy. She is going to look huge if you don't get out there soon.

Take pictures, too, please.

:rotfl:

Don't worry about Daisy aging. Just work on feeling better.

Spent a couple of hours out with Daisy this morning. Would have been longer but we have a pretty icy wind blowing today and it was too cold to be outside long.. If the wind hadn't been so bad it would have been beautiful today! They are however predicting snow tonight, hopefully it isn't much as the mud gumbo in the pasture is just starting to dry out!

My picture mission today was to try to get some action shots since I don't have any of her running and playing yet. When we pulled up she was running in circles around the old tractor (my mom's idea of a lawn ornament) that sits in our pasture and I was excited! But as soon as she saw us she came to the fence to visit and no more running! I am going to have to get a Paparazzi style lens and shoot her from somewhere else LOL! She is getting big so fast!

Her newest trick is she has learned to buck and kick back with both feet so she likes to try and line up to kick back at you.. this is a habit we are going to try and break quick!

My Mom's King Lab Velvet has been kept to the house and dog run the last week because she is convinced Daisy is not a horse, but a stray Dog in her territory and has been barking and growling at her constantly! So while we were all out there today we took her out on a lead to "show" her that Daisy was indeed a horse not a dog! There were some funny moments and I wish I had been shooting pics but it took all of us to make sure the dog, the horse and the humans were safe during the meeting so no pics but it was pretty funny as the lab is almost as tall as Daisy is!

Also when we were leaving she decided she needed to come with us and walked right through the post & beam fence! She needs to grow that couple of inches which will keep her from being able to do this (she was almost too big to pull it off this time but not quite!) She did not like it when she realized that she was seperated from the other horses so hopefully she won't try it again but we shut the gates on the house area so she won't get any further than the yard if she does it again!

I did take some pics and they are loading to Photobucket so I will post them later today.

That's quite the report Sherri.

I hope you can get Daisy to behave sooner than later.

Is Velvet good around the horses otherwise?

What a fun reunion! That kicking certainly has to stop, and I am sure you will succeed in changing that behavior. She must have really bonded to you, and that is a good thing. I hope she can handle the cold tonight.

In the family we have a total of 6 dogs and all of them are good with the horses. Some of them play with them some of them herd them some of them ignore them. Velvet just got it into her head that this was not a horse and was acting as she usually does when a strange dog gets in the pasture.

It is actually cute that she has learned to kick up her heels but she managed to make contact with both my sister & my husband today so yep first real learning thing for Daisy this is not OK!

Yep she is very excited and heads straight for us when we get there so that is def a good thing! She loves having her chin and neck rubbed still a bit ear shy though.

Wish she would grow a little more we tried to get a foal halter on her today when she got out but despite the long legs her head is still too small for the smallest halter so we had to just herd her.

Must have been fun to herd her back. Another thing for her to learn. Did she lick her lips a lot? I always wonder about what exactly did that horse learn when they lick their lips. The good habit or the bad habit? I know it is what they just did, but I still wonder.

I can see her sorrel color now and I like it. She is a cute little thing.

Never knew they licked their lips when learning something will have to watch for it! Yep she has darkened up alot this week...can't wait for her legs to darken up so we can see what her leg markings will be like.

After all that wind we got last night it started snowing about 9am... Poor Daisy isn't liking the weather at all. Her Mom kept her in the barn most of the morning but at 11am like clockwork Mom headed out to the feeding pen to eat and the poor little filly was shaking with the cold so we hauled hay down to the barn and led Rowan back down there so Daisy could get in out of the cold...wish Mom would leave the darn blanket on the baby!

When you teach some behavior (like pointing to the left and the horse turns to the left when longing) and they lick their lips after the behavior is accomplished, the horse is telling you that he understands what he just did is what you wanted. But be careful, they do the same thing if they learned a habit that you don't want them to learn.

Poor Daisy, no outdoor play for a while. Good thing you have a place for her to keep warm.

Do the Horses have any walls to stand aside or behind to get relief from the wind?

They have the barn which is always open, the white house you see in the background of some of the pasture pics which was the original homestead dirt floor house has been converted and they use that too.. also beyond the white house they have a 2 sided lean-to and when the river in not this high they have a protected tree line down on the riverbank that they use most often for wind protection because the river is low just being down off the upper pasture protects them. Daisy would probably have been fine any of those places but the feed pen is an old circle pen and there is no wind protection except the round hay bales and the wind was coming in from the North today and since it usually hits the pasture from the West the hay bale windbreak is set up for wind from that direction so it was no help today.

That sounds like plenty of wind breaks.

Do you grow or buy hay?

Sherri, I saw Pocket last Friday. He is doing well and Richard Winters gave us an explanation of his method while putting him through his paces - like when he puts on clinics. My DH says he got a two-er. Richard laughed. He said that Pocket has had some training, and needs to bring it out in him. I have always felt that he needed miles under the saddle. Richard has a good program and Pocket will come back in fine shape.

OK all you other horse crazy disers ? on an odd behavior we are seeing from Skye (the black & white paint) I think there is a pic of her somewhere on this thread I will have to go back & check.

She was our most gentle horse as far as riding goes and she and Colton were going to start boots & saddles rodeo this year but if I don't figure this out that will be on hold for now.

Early this winter she had a puncture wound on her leg which took almost all winter to heal. The vet says she is sound and shows no lasting effects from the injury. Just thought I would add that info in case anyone thinks it is relevant. Due to the injury she has not been ridden all winter.

All of us even Colton at age 6 can ride her bareback with no problems. She stands fine & lets us put her tack on but as soon as you mount with a saddle on she spins in circles and will not do anything else. This has happened several times this week. If my husband is on her back and I lead using the reins she is fine. We do use the reins when we ride bareback so I don't hink it has to do with the reins or bit.

Anybody else have problems like this ever? Before we got her she was used for cutting so spinning is a learned behavior but not like this She spins you dizzy so you have to dismount. We need to stop this behavior quickly before a previously great rodeo & pleasure horse is ruined,
