My husband and I just happened to get lucky enough to land an ADR at The Yachtsman Steakhouse last Friday at 8pm. We are steak lovers, and have dined at California Grill at each of our previous trips. (Even had our wedding reception there this past February.)
Since I have food allergies (shellfish and almond), our waiter took our drink orders and said the chef would be out shortly to discuss my allergies. Thirty minutes came and went and the chef never came. Our waiter brought us a basket of bread and told us that the chef was very busy, but he'd pass the allergy information along. We both ordered appetizers and filets as our main course. It took another fifteen minutes to get our appetizers and after another thirty minutes had passed, my husband went to find the manager. We have never waited this long for steak in our lives!
I would like to point out that the family to the right of me had been offered another basket of bread and the couple to the left had already received their meals (brought out by the chef personally) - both of these tables had been seated AFTER us, adding to our frustration.
The manager came over and said she would go check on our meals, about five minutes later we were finally served. Our server brought our second bottle of wine over and tried to chit chat with us; since this was the first time he had bothered to stop by our table since taking our appetizer order my husband told him that he was no longer speaking to him and that he would deal with the manager exclusively.
Thankfully, the steak was delicious but that didn't make up for the service. They comped our appetizers ($20 worth) and we still ended up with a $200 bill. My husband and I were both very upset by the service we received here. Quite frankly, we get better service at the local McDonald's. In my eyes, that's a problem.
We spoke with the manager at The Beach Club (our resort) about this experience, which was completely unacceptable in our minds. My husband is a project manager for a large contractor and I am in guest relations at a nationally-ranked hospital, so both of us deal with customer service issues on a daily basis. It's possible that we are overly demanding and critical, but I think that waiting about 1.5 hours for a steak is outrageous.
One of our concerns was my food allergy - had I consumed anything that had come in contact with almonds, I would have ended up in the hospital. (Particularly bad since we were only there for the weekend.) We were both bothered by the fact that nobody really knew the extent of my allergy and nobody bothered to update us on the status of our food. A simple, "I apologize for your wait." or "We're a little backed up, but we've not forgotten about you." would have gone a LONG way.
The strange thing was that the family sitting to my right when we arrived were complaining about the bad service too, so I know it wasn't just us.
Since when is it acceptable to be ignored when spending that much on a meal?
I just wanted to let everybody know what we encountered. We are considering contacting Guest Relations regarding this meal.
