Since I just got back from getting groceries, it made me curious as to how many groceries other families go through in a week. We go through (approximately):

6 gallons milk
4 loaves of bread
2 gallons OJ
10 pounds potatoes
2-2 pound roasts
6 pounds pork chops
6 pounds ground beef
5 pounds chicken
2 bunches bananas
6 cans corn
6 can pears
6 cans peaches
4 cans carrots
oodles and oodles and oodles of snack type things

and more (lots of stuff I can't think of as I already had some and didn't have to buy this week :) )......school lunch stuff and personal care, etc.

For tonight's dinner, we will use:

10 pork chops
2 cans corn
3/4 gallon milk
1/2 loaf bread
10 potatoes
1 can pears
probably 1/2 bottle of ketchup :) ----(might be a SLIGHT exageration, but not much!)

How much stuff does anyone else go through???

Wow, that's a lot but then you have a big family. It's just DH, DD (4) and me so that's a big difference. The one thing we go through a lot of is fresh fruit. I don't even have to go to the grocery store every week but a trip to the fruit market is a must (they also sell veggies, milk, eggs and bread). Also DD has recently become a picky eater and favors just a few things.

Tonight DD will have her usual pasta, cheese slices and corn. DH and I will finish the roast chicken, sweet potatoes and veggies leftover from last night.

How many are you feeding?
We have 2 adults and a 13 dd and 15 ds in ours and except for the meat, sounds about right, except we use fresh or frozen veggies instead of canned (corn is alright....but NO other canned veggies.)
DS drinks about 11/2 gallons of milk himself, DD is lactose intolerant and can't drink much milk. As for bread.........it goes sometimes and sometimes not, but probably 2 loaves, and hard rolls or italian bread also.
I use all the coupons I can get my sweaty hands on and sometimes the supermarkets have triple coupons up to 99 cents...I can really save money on the extra stuff (like laundry det and dish det, shampoo, deod, floor cleaner, etc.)
mzdznyduck:D

Looking at your list, I think we're at about 1/2 of that! Except for the snack type stuff - we're oodles and oodles into that too!

Cheesh - that's a lot of stuff!!

No offense, but I think you already know that not many of us are going to be purchasing anywhere near the amount of groceries you do with such a large family.

I think you already know too that you're going to get a good amount of shock value responses from several people because of the amount of groceries you took the time to list.

Yours is not necessarily a nosy question -- just curious as to why you would ask...

10 Pork Chops  How many are the younger ones eating?

Our weekly bill looks similar (because of the daycare), except the younger ones eat less of the meats and more fruits and veggies. The money spent at the neighborhood fruit stand is more than I like to think about.

Do have a warehouse store like Costco near you? We do a lot of shopping for things there. Makes sense when you are buying in those quantities.

I can't tell you how much of each thing we buy but I can tell you what I spend. We are a family of 4 and I spend between $300 and $400 a week in food! That includes groceries and eating out. The reason we spend so much is because we have a 15 y/o son who inhales everything that comes through the door. Put him together with a friend who eats just as much and we go the $400 range. After looking at your grocery list I think it looks kind of small compared to what I buy. :D

Now see, I thought this was a really fun and interesting question and thread. It's interesting to see what a family that size goes through each week and it makes me feel fine about having three kids (not that your having 6 isn't perfectly fine for you! :) )

I'm not one to try to get into the poster's mind though - I tend to take things at face value and have some fun with it! :)

Different strokes, I guess. :)

Ummmm....okay......trust me, I have no evil intentions in mind with my question. No secret motives or anything. No intentions to shock or whatever you are thinking. It was a question, okay? I wanted to see how a "regular" family compares. Good grief.

The older 2 eat two each, me and DH eat 2, and the 3 youngers eat a little less than 1 each.

We do get fresh veggies, too, but the kids don't really go through a lot of those. Mostly eat them with meals.

The closest warehouse is about a 35 miles from here. Usually, I go to Meijer.

I agree! I enjoy learning about different families....including the amounts of groceries they buy.

When I had the 4 kids all here and their assorted friends my list looked like yours. Now that it's just the girls, DH and I, it's about 1/2 of yours. And I'm forever tossing out spoiled food we never get around to eating. I should just accept I hate cooking, stop buying groceries and start eating out every night. ;)

We don't go through anywhere near that, but our little guy is beginning to inhale food so our grocery bill is increasing every day!

Actually, Kristie, for 6 kids, I think you do pretty well!

I don't want to see your grocery bill in 5 or 6 years though!

more shocking to me than your grocery list
is someone actually spending $300-$400 week on groceries
WOW!!! That's alot of dough.
I'm lucky if I spend that much a month for a family of four including one in diapers and on formula plus a cat & a dog

I love my coupons and shop all the sales.
We have quite a stockpile of regular use items
I always stock up when its on sale and I have coupons

Since it is just DH and I, our grocery bill is about 75.00 a week. When our nephew lived with us, it was double that amount.

When my college DS (6'6) joins my other two teenage sons (6'3 and 6'2) for meals plus me and the DH........we go thru tons of food, too. The last time we had tacos I used 3 lbs of meat and 24 shells!!!:D

Kristy,
WOW!! But what is most shocking to me is "WHERE ARE YOUR GREEN VEGGIES?" and corn and potatoes at the same meal? No, no no.......

Well, I've got a family of four (me, DH, DD (12) and DS (8). My typical grocery bills runs about $200 per week not counting meals out. For our hypothetical pork chop dinner, I would make:

6 pork chops (there will be 1-2 leftover hopefully for lunch)
A few "crowns" of broccoli, steamed
Oven roasted potatoes, approximately 3/4ths of a 5lb bag (some will be leftover).
1/2 bottle of ketchup for the potatoes

We have a huge family too.

3 teenagers, an 8 year old and a 2 year old..then us.

We go through about 5 gallons of milk
3-4 cartons of juice
several pounds of chicken breast and several more pounds of salmon
about 10 yams
a bunch or 2 of bananas
one good size fat free french vanilla coffee creamer (3 people drinking coffee in the AM)
several dozen eggs (we only eat the whites so we need about 9 a day for 2 omlettes)
6 or 7 green peppers
6 or 7 tomatos
6 or 7 onions
3 or 4 zuccinis
2 boxes of Special K w/ berries
2 loaves of bread
3 cans of tuna
1 frozen pizza for the weekend
one pack of roast beef/roast turkey for lunch meat
1/4-1/2 box of Quackers quick oatmeal
one box of Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea for me for evenings

We don't snack too much so there aren't too many snack items... maybe one multi pack of chips for the 8 year old for school and less than one jumbo pack of peanut butter crackers for the 2 year and one or two cartons of juice boxes for the younger 2.

I have 2 kids both live on there own.( DS in college is home 1 night a week)

DH works away from home isand is gone weeks at a time!

I would love to have to buy and make dinner for a big family!!!

I spend about $30 a week

WOW!! But what is most shocking to me is "WHERE ARE YOUR GREEN VEGGIES?" and corn and potatoes at the same meal? No, no no.......

:) Well, my kids are not big on green vegies. They get a little in a small salad and that's about it. Oh yes, we MUST have corn with our mashed potatoes..........for some reason, they feel the need to mix those two together......
