We're headed out soon on the Fantasy on a Western Caribbean itinerary and I have a question that is basically a matter of life and death.

Ok maybe not, but it's close:

Is there anywhere at any port (Grand Cayman, Costa Maya and Cozumel) to buy a Cuban cigar?

Just keep in mind it is illegal for a US citizen to import Cubans into the US. Technically, it is also illegal to purchase them, but you will probably get away with it.

Beware of the fake Cubans. I remember being on one of the first western Caribbean cruises and you couldn't walk deck 4 because of all of the guys out there smoking their "Real Genuine Cuban Cigars"

I'm asthmatic, so don't ask me how to tell the real ones from the fake ones. My guess is that the farther you get from the port the more real they get.

I would ask one of the officers on the crew. I found out that many of the tourist cigar shops have bogus Cubans. When I was on board I asked one of the concierge hosts and he found where to get the real ones. Sorry I don't remember where however.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you need to find a reputable tobacconist, preferably one who has a large climate and humidity-controlled walk in humidor area where high quality products are stored.

In Grand Cayman, off the pier, cross the street and turn right. I can't remember the name, but there was a tobaccoist with a large humidor, where my companion bought some Cubans. All I know is it was BEFORE the Craft market, and probably after the museum. In fact, if it were me, I would go in the museum and ask the ladies for a recommendation or directions. They are local and know everybody.

There are a lot of laws out there. It's impossible to follow them all. I'm not a cigar smoker, but I do find that Cuba make the world's best rum. I'm enjoying a glass right now from a fine bottle I procured on a DCL cruise.

UPDATE:

Cubano procured from Havana Club in Cozumel. A five pack sampler. So. Good. I also had one Cohiba Presidente. It was unbelievable.

For the record, when coming back into the US, the customs guy said "these are Mexican, right?" I said yes. He said "good answer!"

So this might be dumb... is it illegale for Canadians to bring them back??? I don't know anything about it but I know a few people here who would like one when we go on our next one!

As far as I know it's a good ole USA thing.

It is legal for Canadians to bring them back....but you can't take them into the US (Illegal), and except for a panama and up to Vancouver, BC on the Wonder (Unlikely) you would be going through the US to get back home.
