My daughter phoned home this a.m. to let me know she won first chair for the band percussion section! Woohoo--she's worked hard for it and beat the 4 boys that also play. It's triple sweet because they chided her about how that (her beating them) wasn't going to happen! Girl Power!

It was very nice for her to win. Percussion is her secondary musical focus--she also plays piano. She took up percussion because there is no piano in the band (no symphony band or orchestra at the school) AND we already had the drums, etc.--my husband is also a percussionist.

She hopes to study music in college and be a band director some day--a nice goal. It seems to be one of those fields that more and more women are pursuing.

She's still beaming this evening!

My DH is a percussionist and is a music major. He is the percussion instructor at a local highschool and out of about 20-30 percussion kids, there's only ONE girl.
