A Message to Lands' End

I've been one of your best customers for many years.

But I have to say, I really wish you'd just lower your prices a bit in this economy rather than sending me annoying emails EVERY DAY that you're having a 50% off sale or free shipping. It's lame.

Do you really think anyone's going to pay full price knowing how often your stuff goes on "sale"? Or how you can pick stuff up at the end of the year at Sears for a fraction of its original cost?

Wouldn't a better strategy have been to simply lower your prices a bit in the first place rather than "cheapening" your items this way? :confused3

And I really hope the rumors I've heard about your quality going downhill turn out to not be true. In truth, I've found your emails so annoying this year I've found another store to shop at whose marketing strategy feels more palatable to me.

That is all.

I suspect that they know what they're doing. They know that some folks will buy at full price, as an impulse, especially when a style is "new". It's the nature of the consumer marketplace - most of the profit to be derived, these days, is from selling an impression, not products. Too often, just selling products barely covers costs.

I think you hit on something, though, toward the end of your message: It is important to shop where you feel comfortable with the marketing strategy. Some folks will relish having this season's fashions at the beginning of the season, or will get a charge out of "saving" 50% so often, while others will tend toward other approaches.

I feel the same way about Kohl's. They are always having a grand opening sale or something going on. Only a MAN would pay full price there!!!

I just wish they would ship out of the USA. I don´t understand why, it´s not like they´ll be paying the shipping...

I will continue to shop at Lands' End because I finally found some pants that fit me the way I like. Yes, I pay a little more, but it saves me looking all over for something that I'm going to have to hem. And I love their polo shirts. I have bought them everywhere, and only Lands' End don't shrink and fit the way I want.

Most people would rather shop a sale then to buy something at regular price. There is some kind of thrill in saving money that you don't get when you pay full price, even in the full price is a cheaper one.

Don't think for one minute that stores haven't figured that one out. People complain about high prices at certain stores, but they are right there shopping when there is a big sale. For some people it is a rush.

OP here - don't worry, this is not a Men = Bad, Women = Good thread, as my DH would say. My DH likes to shop like I do, and he loves a good sale, too!

And don't get me wrong, I love the thrill of a sale, too. I just don't like this "40% off sale" thing I get almost EVERY DAY. As I said before, I love Lands' End merchandise, too. I'm just not loving their current merchandising strategy, and it IS driving me away a bit.

I agree with the Lands End marketing...it is annoying and I have found that their quality has gone down. I always buy my swimsuits and I haven't been happy with the styles the last 2 seasons.

For the record, I needed new tennis shoes and went to Kohls...they weren't on sale!!! I bought them anyway and came back that weekend for a price adjust...they were on sale. lol My sil works there and says the only thing that doesn't go on sale is some socks.
