My oldest niece is leaving in just 4 hours for college for the first time. My sister had a going away party tonight and Mom and I just got home. My DN is so excited, but there were some tears on the part of the "grown ups." She is a sweet, beautiful young woman. I didn't see her every day, or even every week, and she is only going to be 4 hours away, but it is a new chapter in her life and who knows where the road will lead her. I can only hope it isn't too far from home. I'm sure my sister will be shedding quite a few tears herself tomorrow. We are a crying family.

Bless your heart. The children growing up is a bitter sweet thing. I have a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old, and I find myself feeling a bit nostalgic for the times when they were smaller. I know for sure that when mine leave home, I will be one sad mama... at least for a while ;). Though she will surely miss her daughter terribly, I'm sure it will get easier for your sister and the rest of the family as time goes by.

Going away to college is definitely one of those bittersweet events. You want to celebrate this rite of passage but its your baby leaving home.

The good news is you can be that special aunt who sends the unexpected surprise packages.

Kim -

I got a growing up reality this week as well. My oldest, 25 next month got engaged.

I know he is all ready grown up, he went to college, owns a house, etc.. but when he told me I just wanted to cry.. For some reason I am just not ready for this.

We raise them to grown up, but darn does it ever end :)

Congratulations Kelly,

You're right, we raise them to grow up but does it have to go so quickly.

My oldest will be 25 next year and has moved about 4.5 hours away, finding that special person in her life is the thing she is looking for the most.

I am feeling the same way these days.
My DD17 just started her last year of high school and has been bringing home college/university catalogues which is great, but also very sad for me. I am a single mom, she is my only child and it has been us against the world for the past 17 years now! What will I do without her around to tell how un-cool I am daily? ;)
It's tough but also very rewarding to see our kiddies grow up. She is an outstanding young lady and I can't wait to see what wonderful things she does with her life.... The next chapter begins.....:sad1:

I understand what you are saying Kim. I still remember the day my parents dropped me off at college when I was 18 years old. I was in a dorm and when they left we both knew my life had hit a crossroads.

Little did I know I'd find my wife Kim in a few years, or move on and get a Masters degree while moving to Indiana. There will be so many opportunities for your niece down the road. Just be glad for that and know life will treat her well. :wizard:

we're a crying family too Kim...
it's so hard...

When my son got married in April (at the age of 22), DH, DD and I kept breaking down and crying about it....
we've always done everything together...the 4 of us....
so we would cry about how all that is changing...it's exciting for him of course, but still it's sad that that period in our lives is over....

we were supposed to be in WDW for the past 2 weeks..
when i was planning the trip i kept breaking down and crying that our son wouldn't be going with us for the first time ever....
i have to admit that when i had to cancel the WDW trip i was sort of happy about it...or maybe happy isn't the right word, but not as sad as i should have been canceling a trip to the mouse....
but the trip just wouldn't have been the same without DS...

anyway, we're a crying family too ;)

You guys all have me a little sad, and my dd is only 10!

Kim,
My niece, who I am very close to, and who is also very close to my dd, just left for college a few weeks ago, too. I love that she is going away and being a very independent woman now, but I still hated to see her go. She is my sister and BIL's only child, so I know it's hard on my sister. I know she'll do great, though, so it's exciting to see her expand her horizons.

Congratulations on this big milestone in your life! They can certainly be bittersweet in so many ways.

This year was full of those for our family. In May our DD graduated from college and then got married in July. Our DS was just married on Saturday. I know what you mean about those tears!
