A little doggy question

So Onslow and I just finished his walk today. A good time but as he is doing his business I see that's he's a lot loosey goosey. Not Diarea especially but he was a tad loose last night as well. So I remembered about hte canned pumpkin being mentioned in other threads for this occurence. I just wonder how much we should give him. DH is picking up some on his way home from work today so we'll give it to him tonight. Also should I mix it with his food, or just give it to him straight?

I've used canned pumpkin for CONSTIPATION, not diarrhea! I think that's not a good idea if your dog is already having loose stools. I've used it for my cats before and just mixed a little in with their wet food, they ate it with no problem.

But I really would not suggest it for anything other than constipation! Hope your dog is better soon.

OK, but i just did a search and it seems that there are DISsers who have used it for both constipation and diarrhea. Sure can't complain about search now, it gave me threads all the way back to 2004. Not all doggy related but still.

Anybody else care to chime in?

Diarrhea = gut not working right; not absorbing water like it should. You need to rest it a bit and either give little to no food for 24hrs (major diarrhea) or something easily digestible, like a small amount of chicken w/ broth and rice (minor diarrhea).

You need to be careful about sticking with a diet that's as regular as possible. Many dogs have sensitive stomachs and even minor changes can bring about stomach upsets. Be careful about too many treats or fatty foods.

Oh we don't dare switch his diet. Did that once cause in the first Noreaster in NOV. cause we basically had no choice and he had no food. We learned our lesson. He had a little chicken added to his Nutro last night but i doubt that's it cause he was loose b4 he ate it. I wouldn't say he's all the way dairrhea, but he's very loose and he didn't seem to think he was finished. He hasn't really eaten yet today but that's normal for a weds. He seems to want to eat later in the day when I'm off. Don't know why.

He's been loose b4 but its usually just a 1 time thing or a tail end bit. This is the first time he's been loose twice in a row.

I feel like I am an expert of dogs with diarrhea. Ranger, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, had serious stomach issues last year. It took about 6 months to get him sorted out. Went from Pedigree dog food to boiled chicken and rice to Dick Van Patten's dog food (yeah the one from 8 is enough) which only has 5 ingredients to now Purina One. He seems stable on the Purina One.

Anyway, the diarrhea can be from anything and nothing. Sometimes eating too much will cause it. Do you put water in his food or give him canned dog food? That can bring on looser stools. Could be stress related. If it continues though take him in. Ranger's problem never got a good diagnosis but I narrowed it down to a corn allergy. It came on after being on Pedigree for a year so go figure.

As for the pumpkin, I had a vet (on call emergency vet) tell me when Ranger had his first episode of the diarrhea to give it to him to move things on out of his system which I took to mean more diarrhea so I didn't do it. I also had our regular vet tell me to give our Sheltie pumpkin for her constipation. I don't think I would give it in this case. Now when the Sheltie has some looser stools I give her a banana or cheese or crackers. Same as I would give a toddler with a stomach bug. Seems to help her.

I've never had a dog that didn't have diarrhea from time to time, and some dogs are more prone to it than others.

IME, though, it's usually food related, as in, ate a little something he shouldn't have (sometimes you may not even know).

All you need to do is get the system back on track.

The only thing I can think of food related is that he occassionally decides to help himself to the discards of our Cockatiel. Rally's like every other tiel in that when he's burrowing for food some of it winds up on the floor. And every now and again Onslow will help himself to it, though we do sweep on a regular basis. Just makes no sense to sweep every time a crumb flies out of the cage

We have two small dogs, a yorkiepoo and a cockapoo, who have had several bouts of diarrhea over the last few years. What our bet recommends that works for us is a mixture of plain white rice and cottage cheese. Mix together and feed instead of dog food for one or two meals and it usually does the trick.

Yes, pumpkin is well known to firm up loose stool. It also works for constipation.

Just give a spoonful either by itself, shoved into a Kong, or on top of their food.

Pumpkin is good to give on a regular basis to aid in good digestive health.

My dog went through a bad time after whelping puppies.
I fed her chicken (cooked chicken breasts) rice and canned pumpkin.
Worked like a CHARM.

I just cooked a breast, added some cooked rice and about 3 TBSP of pumpkin. Each feeding.
