We just got today's mail delivered. Included was a letter that has me thinking about the meaning of this holiday season...

Before we bought our house, we rented a house on the city's north side. All of the houses there are very close in, side by side, seperated by the driveways.

You got to know your neighbors very well.

We had borrowed a big stake truck to move our stuff in. Matthew, my DS, was four at the time and really wanted a ride in the truck. He sat up front with me. We pulled into the driveway and I went around to let him out. I started to unload the truck. As I came around the truck I noticed Matthew reaching through the chain link fence that seperated our driveway from the neighbor's back yard. He was picking our neighbor's ripe tomatoes through the fence!! Soon enough our neighbor came out. I apologized for Matthew's behavior. Our neighbor, Gerry, smiled and reassured us that it wasn't a problem. He picked another couple of tomatoes and gave them to Matt. His wife, Eva, came out and soon we were all talking at the fence. Unloading the truck was put on hold.

Despite our age difference (Gerry and Eva were in their late 70's), we became very good friends.

After a year in the house, we bought our house and moved away. We visited every so often, but as the years went by we stopped going. Soon we exchanged Christmas cards to keep in touch.

Today we got a letter from Eva.

Gerry died last January. We didn't see the obituary because we were so busy with the holidays, I'm sure. Eva, soon after Gerry's passing, had a heart attack and triple by-pass surgery. She is recovery slowly. Last September their daughter also had a heart attack and died. Their son lives 'out west' somewhere. I think that 'out west' in this case is more of a emotional, rather than physical, state. Eva also lost her sister this past year.

So now she sits in that big house, all alone at Christmas.

From Eva's letter...."It sure is lonesome here. Come over and see me. Call me xxx-xxxx"

My family is planning this wonderful Christmas this year. All of us together. Little ones with beaming faces. A stash of gifts under the tree.

We are rich beyond compare and so, so lucky.

I'd like to ask you all to keep Eva and her son in your thoughts this Christmas. If you are one who prays, I'd appreciate you adding them to your prayers.

If you know of someone who might benefit from good thoughts and prayers, please add them here.

Merry Christmas to you all and thank you! :)

Prayers and good thoughts for Eva and her son.

Thanks for the reminder that we are truly blessed in so many ways and have so much to be grateful for.

Bernie...a very sweet post. Thank you.

The elderly neighbor I keep an eye and ear on, has gone to her daughter's for the holidays. Before leaving the family told me this would be her last year in the house. It made me so sad to think she wouldnt be there.

merry Christmas Bernie...and to all those you love and those that love you. I wish for you much happiness and laughter.

I will keep Eva in my prayers and her son . I f you could keep my niece in your prayers during the holidays as her little 2yr old past away last march from a brain tumor as they are being strong I know they are going through h*** inside and just going through the motions for her three other children.

Will do, Bernie.

And I was going to ask the same thing as Browneyes -- got room for one more? Call her up and invite her to join you? :)

Just an idea Bernie... but you have a houseful of voices.... a quick trip to carol her would probably be the highlight of her day... and I bet you would all have a good time too. :)

I will keep Eva in my thoughts and prayers. I will also be thinking of my DF's daughter Sammy. She has been fighting cancer since she was 7. She just turned 9 and is losing her fight with this horrible beast. Our little town decorated the homes and downtown very early this year, so that when Sammy came home from her last hospital stay... she would be welcomed back in grand style. She loves Christmas and we all wanted to honor that and show our love and support.

Let's hold that spirit in our hearts.

What a beautiful post Bernie! I will keep Eva in my thoughts and prayers today. You are right, so many of us are so very lucky for what we do have.

Thanks, Bernie, for sharing a bit of Eva's life, both past and present, with your DIS family. She will, along with so many who hurt in body and spirit, be in my thoughts and prayers. A story close to the heart. And Dbl D, Sammy also will be among them.

Oh gee, that's so sad Bernie. Eva will be in my thoughts and prayers today and tomorrow, as will her son. I too and very fortunate to have family and loved ones near by (even though we've been bickering and snipping at each other for weeks now  ). That sad letter does stop and make one think.

Will do, OK, and I hope YOU will plan on visiting her sometime in the next 12 days!;) Nice story.

So sad. I hope you can find a place for Eva in your festivities, Bernie.

I tend to pick up the strays every Christmas Eve. We have quite a few this year, friends from India who don't celebrate Christmas but have no where to go since there families are so far away. And a few elderly friends I have picked up over the years - people alone and forgotten about. I can't bear the thought of people spending the holidays alone, so I force them to come to my family celebrations! :)

I'll say a prayer for Eva and her son.

Thank you so much for sharing this touching story, I will be sure to keep her in my thoughts and prayers! :D

Something to think about. Bernie, I will keep EVA in my thoughts and prayers. Have a wonderful Christmas my friend.

Thanks for sharing Eva with us Bernie. A real kick in the pants to be grateful for our family & friends to share this holiday with. I know some of my family won't be 'enjoying' this Christmas as much as they have in the past. :(

I hope 'Santa' is good to Eva this holiday and, brings her better health in the New Year. She's had a really bad year.
