A kid just threw up in DD's gymnastics class

You don't blink an eye but can you understand that other parents are really worried about their kids getting sick. Unfortunately, there is a large group of parents who send sick kids to activities because it's easier than keeping them home. I can not tell you how often a listless, obviously sick child gets on my bus in the mornings - coughing, sleeping, with red eyes and chills. I send them to the nurses office and tell them to have the nurse call their mother to come and get them. I also have to isolate them from the other children and call out' everyone go in and wash their hands immediately.'

But you do it so the sick kid doesn't feel akward, right? Since it probably wasn't his choice to get up and go to school.

That's the catch 22 with most school systems attendance policies. The kids aren't excused unless they produce a doctor's note stating they are excused for so many days. A parent calling in sick just doesn't cut it. I work in the school system and think it's ridiculous. I would much rather excuse the absence of a sick child than have the poor thing miserable at school.

Is it possible that the kid has some kind of chronic issue that causes throwing up? My son has significant respiratory issues. He sounds like he has swine flu or something for all of allergy season. I take him places like soccer practice because I KNOW he's not contagious.

I still think this is an issue that even if a child isn't throwing up for contagious reasons, his vomit isn't sanitary, but I can image families that become accustomed to their child vomiting, in the same way that I don't blink an eye when my child sounds like he's on death's doorstep.

My son has an eosinophilic disorder. He pukes. He pukes because of his chronic disease. It's not something we can anticipate and it's not something I can stop from happening if he's flaring. He's not contagious and I clean up after him if he's puked. He's puked everywhere...it's gross, but it's who he is and I love him. The only way to ensure that people outside the family don't have to witness him puking would be if we were hermits. He's not in any way contagious and we pretty much live in doctors' offices (so it would not be uncommon for us to say we'd just been to the doctor's office).

Glad the owner sent them home.

If the kid had a disorder that caused him to throw up commonly, this would have happened before, and the father would likely have talked to the teacher AND the other parents BEFORE this. I certainly would if my son had reflux or lung problems etc etc that caused him to throw up routinely!

Soooooo, I should go up to strangers and announce my child's illness to them because I want them to make him even MORE of a social pariah than he already is? Sorry, you don't have any business knowing about my son's medical issues. If he does get sick in public, at that point I explain that he's not contagious (like this father does) and I usually say it's an eosinphilic disorder. It's gross to see puke, but the kid is not always passing around the plague. Next time you see it happen, remember it may be one of our eos kids.
