A "is this a good college" thread for all college searchers...

so some new ones on the list
College of Charleston???(small scale and they were super friendly-over the top with sharing emails to high ups at the school - that won my son over)

Wentworth? In Boston?(technology school)

University of Scranton(closest to home I could get him)

Georgia Tech was one that he was interested in too from the college fair and based on his major.

Unfortunately Purdue the one he was most excited about had the lamest person manning their booth. Just nothing. but we are still going out there to check it out ourselves.

anyone on any of those?

College of Charleston is on DD short list. Great school. We went to an open house in April. They have relatively small class sizes and from talking to some of the students the professors are very approachable.

I don't know if you have visited yet, but one of the things that was mentioned several times in the info session was that the school is "unadbashedly Jesuit." I'm not sure how you or your son would feel about that---just throwing it out there. And, this is nothing to do with academics, but Scranton was the only school that gave us a voucher for a meal in their dining hall. We really appreciated that, and the food was quite tasty.

That's a plus for me as I went to BC, another Jesuit School. Still have not gotten there. We're heading out to Purdue in July. I'll report back after we go! Thanks for the info on Scranton's!

and SC minnie maybe they'll be classmates! I told him he would have to work on his "southern Gentleman" skills if he goes there!

If anybody checking this thread is interested in Belmont University in Nashville, I'd like to give them my vote. During our search process, every time we were on-campus they treated the prospective students and their families like gold.

One thing that stands out in my mind is how they handled the food..
*Visit #1...Signed up online for a general campus visit during the summer and they gave us each vouchers for lunch in a campus snack-bar (since the cafeteria wasn't open)
*Visit #2... This was for Campus Open House, when there were probably hundreds of prospective students and their families visiting. For this visit, the school provided free (and quite generous) box-lunches to every single attending person (who had signed up for the visit). That included all family-members. This was nice because we didn't have to stand in line at overwhelmed campus eateries. (At another institution on another Campus Open House Day?...we never did get to eat our 'free' meal at the cafeteria. We had to get to an on-campus fast-food place in a rush, so we never did find out what the actual cafeteria food was like...other than the fact that they *really* really couldn't handle a big crowd.)
*Visit #3... Last visit before National College Decision Day(May 1st, by the way). They provided a free voucher for the student to eat in the cafeteria, I had to pay but it was only $6.50 *and* it was an all-you-care-to-eat buffet. Getting to eat in the cafeteria was one of the reasons we wanted to visit again and the food was really good, lots of different choices (hot pasta and meat dishes, sandwiches, desserts, homemade soups, make your own salad bar, peanut butter/jelly/bread station, etc.), plus ingredients/calories listed for each item.

Yeah, I bet you can tell which place DD picked.
agnes!

Two of our friends have kids going there this coming fall.

Bumping to see if anyone has info on the University of Evansville. We are heading out next week to check out Notre Dame and Evansville.

I haven't visited this thread in a while, but just wanted to report that we have a visit scheduled in August for Penn State-Hazelton campus. We saw Penn State University Park last summer and DS16 said it was WAYYYY too big.

We are visiting Eastern University and Messiah College in the fall.

He is still not sure what he wants to do, but he is leaning towards ministry, specifically youth ministry. I think Psychology would be a good thing to major in, and then go on to seminary after.

Any information on University of Redlands in California? The twins got info in the mail yesterday and the campus looks amazing--now, how is the school :lmao:.

What areas are they studying? I wonder if DD might have met them at Towering Traditions/Class Registration earlier this week, there are only about 1200 Freshmen... We had a great time, LOVED the Professor who is head of the Honors Program, great guy, really cares about the kids. And the campus is GORGEOUS, immaculately landscaped, buildings look like they're in good shape. PS - DD got all the classes she wanted :cool1: .

One is studying music production (I think) and the other I am not sure, something in music :lmao:. It's very possible they are both in the honor's program so if he met an Anna and/or Zach from MN that's them.

:cool1:Good to know. We'll head down to check it out. We leave for Purdue next week!I'm excited to check it out. I hope my son is:rotfl2:

We have some good friends who's son just finished his junior year there-he LOVES it!! He is going into Pharmacy.

I know you posted this awhile ago but I just saw it know and thought I would still share what I had known just incase it still might help:thumbsup2

My cousin went there for graduate and undergraduate and I have visited the school a lot of times. From what I have seen on my visits it's a very nice school. It's next to Northeastern but because of it's size it doesn't seem as overwhelming or as urban. It's a clean campus and the area around it is nice and Boston is right there!

I know that they have a high job placement for graduates and a lot of places in Boston look upon graduates from there very highly.

Ok, expanding our search some, what about Ohio schools? What is good out that way? Looking for something under 10,000 students, science/math as possible majors. Suggestions to investigate?

For those asking about Georgia Tech, it's a great school. I'm a little biased because I go to UGA but Tech is a great school. It's just REALLY hard. Like, people with 4.0s from high school struggle to keep 2.7s hard. It's really competitive, and there have also been a couple of "incidents" (violence-related) in the past couple of years. Stabbings etc. It's in the middle of Atlanta so there's a lot of stuff to do, but it also doesn't make Tech the safest place you could go either. I do know a lot of people who go there though who feel very safe and love it. It really is an amazing school... really well known for its engineering program.

We have visted both Univ of San Diego and UC San Diego. They are close together geographically, but that's about all they have in common. UC San Diego is a large, public university. Unique among the UC system is the six college system they use at UC San Diego. Each college has it's own General Education requirements and they vary a LOT. Housing is aval on campus for freshman.
Univ of San Diego is a small, private school...plenty of housing for all 4 years. Small campus, small classes. A friends' D loves it there...my D won't be applying.

Oh, and since this is the Disboards...about 2 to 2 1/2 hours south of Disneyland. Amtrak avaliable to get back and forth.

Hope this helps someone.
