Today we tried something new to us to raise money for our cheerleaders. A local grocery store, Winn Dixie, let us come up there and bag groceries for tips. We had our cheerleaders come in two hour shifts and we had tip jars at each register. We worked from 8-6 baging and cheering for the customers. The manager was great and announced every hour or so that we were bagging for tips. He really made it fun for us and the customers seemed to love it.

You will not believe how much we brought in doing this. After the last shift we were at $2000.00 plus change that needs to be counted. it was an awesome day!! :goodvibes

I have read several threads in the past asking for fundraiser ideas so I thought I would share something that worked well for us.

They do that around here and Winn Dixie is my go to grocery store. Food World does it too.

I hate the little beggers in front of Walmart. I always tip the kids bagging groceries. I would rather tip someone trying to earn the money than give money to kids that attack you outside the store.

What a great idea!! My DD is in band and they have the same fund raisers year after year. No one what's to buy flower bulbs or 31 brand lunch boxes anymore. We do car washes but they always start at like 5:00 on week days. I am going to suggest we do something like this. Maybe the school band can play some music too. :thumbsup2

I would much prefer it to the money grab the cheerleaders try around here- Just standing around outside the store. I don't know when begging became the norm.

Great idea! Continued success!

I feel the same way. This was our first year to do it and the manager has put us down to do it again for the same weekend next year. I hope that we can find a way to do it around Thanksgiving or Easter when the grocery store will be extra busy. He loved it too because as busy as they were they never got backed up and the lines ran real smooth so it was a win win. :)

I hope this helps give someone else an idea for a fundraiser because it was sooooo easy!! :thumbsup2

Sonic does this and you car hop for tips . I miss Winn Dixie we have not had them here in Tx for years

I NEVER give money to kids standing around with money jars and doing nothing. I will buy the heck out of baked goods, pay for coupon books I'll never use, get inadequate car washes, all of that good stuff. Not give stuff to kids for nothing. That's not a good life lesson to them.

I love the bagging groceries fundraiser, sounds like a great idea!

I am a cheer mom & not fond of fundraisers...lots of work for little return. Just might have to look into this!:cool1:
How many girls were bagging at one time? (only 10 girls on freshman squad...)
THANKS!

My first thought was "What a great deal for Winn Dixie!" -- your girls saved them from having to pay their regular baggers that shift. :rotfl:

You did great! Congratulations! :cheer2:

That's a great idea! I'd love to look into seeing whether a supermarket would allow the band to not only bag but help the customer load their trunk. I'm not talking little kids but High Schoolers.

Great idea! I, too, hate begging at the door.

That could never happen around here- the food workers union would never go for that! And where I shop they have the special needs people bagging up your groceries for a paycheck. Though I go to the self service line because I prefer to bag my own!

We have a lot of union grocery stores so that wouldn't really work. W hole Foods will allow it but that is one of the few stores that would .

...

We have one store here that is bag-it-yourself, but the checkers are Union. If you tried this plan here you would have a major grocery strike on your hands.

Yeah I was confused and wondering if you don't have baggers at your normal grocery store? Man if it was a fundraiser for bagging I would feel pressured to tip even though that's money I don't normally spend at the grocery store ...

Our biggest fundraiser every year (back when my kids were in marching band) was what we called 'band night'. Every fall, just after the football season started, the kids, dressed in their summer band uniforms, gathered at the school one evening and were sent out in groups of 4 or 5 with a parent, and they literally went door to door in the whole school district, asking for support. They were very polite, thanked everyone regardless of whether they wanted to kick in a few bucks, handed out flyers about public concerts they were going to be giving, and raised several thousand dollars over the 3 hour event.

No selling stuff folks didn't want to buy, just a sincere, polite ask for financial support from their neighbors. Every kid had to participate, so the burden of fundraising was shared equally. And it's been working for over a decade now - so I'm guessing if there was a lot of outcry in the community, the school would have put a stop to it long ago.
