A good lens for AK

If you're going to get the 70-300, you may as well get the IS one. If you're going to spend that much money, you should get the 70-200 f/4 L instead. It's not too much more money.

If you're going to spend that much money on a lens, you want to do it right, so you should get the 70-200 f/4 L with IS. Of course, the IS isn't always a substitute for a wide aperture, so you should get the 70-200 f/2.8 L instead. But then again, sometimes IS is better than a wider aperture, so instead of compromising, you should get the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L. Yeah, that's it.

The best place to take pictures is in the last row. You can get great pictures from the sides and the rear.

You have a more open view in the back, but it is at least twice as rough. You have much less risk of camera motion blur in the front. The best thing to do is to have two people in your party taking pics on either side of the truck.

One thing that goes against all of us photographers is that when the lighting is bright, the animals tend to stay hidden. You see more animals and they are more active when it is overcast. I think that overcast makes a better picture, but it gets tough to have a fast enough shutter on that ride with overcast conditions.

I usually go on it more for the ride than the pics, and prefer the last row for the fun factor

The tiger photo was taken from the first overlook, to the post on the wall by the pool, maybe 50 feet? The image I posted is a cropped version, I probably should have used the 1.4x too.

Why didn't I buy the 70-200 f/2.8 IS? Price, size, and weight. The f/4 version is about as much as I care to carry around all day but I sure would like the extra stop and IS. Maybe one day...

Good point. It's probably best to buy the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, the 70-200 f/4 IS and the 70-300 DO so that you can pick the appropriate one for each outing.

I should probably point out that I own shares of Canon stock, so I have a bit of a conflict of interest.

I think Mark has the answer, one of each! Maybe I could get the 70-300 DO for DW so I can "borrow" it...
Or the f/2.8..."gee Honey, that looks awfully heavy, I'll carry it for you... on my camera!"

Jann, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS sells for about $1700 online. The 70-300DO is about $1100 and is not as good optically as the 70-300IS at $600.
