This is meant to be lighthearted because I found it funny!

Heard a lot over the last few years how all those takers, and moochers and losers ought to get out there and make something of themselves.

Worked hard, got a new degree and student loans.

Heard a lot today how my new profession is overrun with new grads and the schools ought to quit turning out newbs so the older and more deserving techs can find work and get paid better. Said by a 3 year out of school grad

Does that fall under "Irony" or "tragedy"?

It does upset me that so many of the kids and even adults are creating student loans, and not enough jobs to go around. How do they expect them to repay the loans? Even then if they find a job it does not mean that the hourly pay is going to cover their regular living expense, let alone repay the loans that were created.

Not to be insulting, but I see two problems here:

1. Student loans. I know, I know, the cost of education, from where is the money to come? But inexpensive options do exist. They're not always convenient or easy, but they exist.

2. Lack of research. All degrees aren't equal. Some lead to good jobs, while others don't, but it's not a secret which is which.

So what do you do at this point? You take whatever job you can get, you live a frugal lifestyle and plug along at the loans, and all the while you search for the good job you really want.

Funny enough (or sadly) the real issue is that the older generation cannot afford to retire at the same age so there are no jobs to be had! It's now becoming more and more common for people to push back their retirement because they cannot stop working. My sister recently finished her bachelor's degree and her boyfriend, who has never been to college, makes more money than her as a mechanic. She is very upset and frustrated knowing she has student loans and nothing to show for it at the end of the day. My mom went back to school to finish her degree and she couldn't even use it when she was done because no one wanted to hire someone without experience. Sadly degrees are a dime a dozen these days.

the disney mindset contributes a bit to this, unfortunately.

too many people want to get a degree in what they "love" or enjoy most, without considering whether there is a lot of demand for the skills they are learning...

My dh and I both work in places (govt. and non-profit), where there are people who are approaching their 80s who cannot afford to retire. Some are still working well, others cause a lot of problems because they should have retired. I do think there is definitely a trend of people working longer than is ideal because they cannot support themselves otherwise.

I'm not insulted. I did what I thought was best and am happy to have a degree and training in a field I will like. What I am going to do is make myself available wherever there is a job for me in my field, NOT going to take just any old minimum wage thing after all that work I am willing to go pretty much wherever I can find something. But we own a home and have a 12 year old in a school system that will fully pay for her college. So there will be sacrifice on my part but just not that way!

I am now trained in a good healthcare modality. I researched, I will find a job, just maybe not right here

Try to keep a positive attitude. DS graduated with Bachelor's in 2012 and Master's in 2013 in (gasp) history. While working on his Master's he got an unpaid internship at a non-profit museum, when he graduated he was hired as their curator. It is a National nonprofit. He has been there about 16 months and is now interviewing at an even bigger museum. All he heard for 5 years was how stupid he was to major in history!

Yep, I hear you! I am a bit older and get a bit freaked out thinking this might have all been for nothing, but I going to stay positive and flexible
We lost 2 good jobs here in our house and it has been a journey getting through it all.

Which takes me back to laughing about my original post sort of damned if you don't and damned if you did, lol

I am one of those with huge loan debt, yet not making enough to justify it. Don't get me wrong, I do make my payments, but I will paying until I die. Every job I've held to date (graduated over 10 years ago), I've gotten based on my work experience and am making nothing near what I thought I would when I decided to get my MBA. My degree has opened zero doors for me, much to my chagrin:/ And the financial burden is very stressful. If I had to do it over again, I would've probably skipped college all together or just gone part-time. I would be so much farther ahead financial that way.

Sorry to hear that. Both my kids graduated in the last 3 years and have loan debt. They chose a school they could commute to and lived at home. We helped them as much as we could and they both worked full time. Their debt isnt too bad but they both work in the public sector and it will take years to pay off. They have friends who have over 80k in debt. I can't imagine.

I know someone who has a debt of over 100k for school. The payment runs 1100.00 a month. And sadly the money they earn barley covers just regular expenses.

Research only gets you so far. When I entered college there were tons of jobs in my profession. Then, in a short amount of time, word spread that there was a need for more degreed people in the field. New programs opened up at several schools and people entered the profession in droves. Now you are lucky if you can find a job. I feel your pain OP. I honestly don't know if I'll push my kids to go to college when they get of age. I can't afford to fund all four of them through college and it seems like the ones who really get ahead these days are those who learn a trade, start a business, and work hard building their business and funding their nest age from a young age rather than going into debt just to get a job.
