Is the band on his CD "his" band, or made up by the record company?

I just read about his band in Entertainment Weekly.

Though Daughtry talks a lot about breaking the mold, the 12-song CD is as calculated as a Britney Spears album. A savvy rock producer (Howard Benson) was hired, along with proven songwriters like former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody and hitmaker Dr. Luke, who helped pen Kelly Clarkson's ''Since U Been Gone.'' (Daughtry contributed three wholly original compositions, and co-wrote most of the disc.) The Nickelback-esque sound was created by seasoned players, and auditions in Hollywood last fall found the appropriately pierced and mohawked sidemen now known as just...Daughtry. (His old band, Absent Element, were invited to audition, but didn't make the cut.)

He already lost one member within weeks of starting to tour. Maybe Chris demanded he get a matching 4 inch high "DAUGHTRY" tattoo on his back as a band uniform? :rotfl:

The band he used in the studio is the band he's been performing with, with only one change (rhythm guitar).

Howard Benson is an amazing producer. The problem is that the label is calling every shot to package Daughtry as a psuedo-rocker to appeal to a wide audience.

The whole "appropriately pierced and mohawked sidemen" thing cracked me up, because those guys look as tame as tame comes. With a few quick strokes with a comb, every one of them could work on Wall Street. Short hair, no easily visable tattoo's that I can see, it's actually a pretty lame look.

But then again I've always said that while no doubt Daughtry is a good singer, his look is far from original. In fact I can name 15 other guys in currently unsigned bands who have the same look and can sing equally well if not better. While I"m not knocking him, I am saying that he had the third element that it takes to "be a rock star," which in all honesty is the most important. The first is talent. The second is look. The third is the dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time.

They could put Daughtry on as front man for the Wiggles and I'd buy the CD. He is awesome!:thumbsup2

I'm really enjoying his album. Whatever they did, they did a good job and he certainly seems to be extending his audience beyond the Idol fanbase.

Don't you think that Daughtry's voice is just so "listenable"? I think it's smooth and unique for a rocker voice. I love it - throw any band behind that voice and you have magic.pixiedust:

The other thing is that he appeals to a wide audience. I love the album, my husband who never watched AI loves the album and my son and his girlfriend (teenagers) both really like the album. There is definitely something very appealing about it.

ITA - I'm actually going to give the CD to my 64 year old mom and see what she thinks, as she liked him on AI. I think she'll enjoy it.:)

I love the CD but I've loved Chris since he sang wanted dead or alive. My DH who isn't into the AI thing even likes the CD and sings along in the car with me.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. I've listened to a lot of what I suppose you'd call "non-pseudo" rockers that appeal to only a limited audience, and I simply don't like them. Even Nickelback, which supposedly Daughtry sounds like, isn't near half as fun to listen to IMHO.

I think that's a great way of putting it.

I love Chris Daughtry and am always shocked that some people just don't think he's talented. No offense ducklite, but to each his own I suppose. I thought he was far and away the most talented singer of last year's AI and Daughtry is quickly becoming a favorite for me (along with Bon Jovie, Van Halen, AC/DC, Nickelback and Evanescence).

Although listening to his album it made me wonder if everything was ok with he and his wife? Every song is about breaking up, don't break up with me, I don't need you etc. Was he singing to her or about former loves? Or was he just singing whatever they wrote for him?

I think the first album was good, but I anticipate his next to be a bit edgier. This one was a little soft. I know he's got more in there!

Dh always teases me when I he walks into the barn and I'm rocking out to Daughtry while grooming the horses..."why don't you just KISS him already" he scoffs at me while he goes and sulks.

I agree about the lyrics, some are so sad-but I wondered with my step-daughter if he wrote them awhile ago (some) before he met his wife-while "Home" is definitely about his current situation. My favorite saying " be careful what you wish for...."

He's basically a pop artist packaged just edgy enough to appeal to a segment of the rock audience while still being conservative and pop enough to appeal to the pop/soft rock market.

That said, the pop market is fickle and he'll likely be yesterdays news with them after his second CD. He's not quite edgy or heavy enough to appeal to a rock audience for any length of time. He's going to need to make up his mind moving forward, because packaged like he is right now, he's not going to last in either market long term.

Agian, your opinion ducklikte. I don't think he's pop at all. However I do agree that he will need to be more edgy with future albums.

Nickelback and Daughtry sound nothing alike, although I can see how they would have a similar fan base. I hear (obviously) Fuel, maybe some Staind, Breaking Point, Trapt, Hoobastank, Theory of a Deadman, etc. (Funny that Howard Benson produced quite a few of those, and Ben Moody co-wrote with a handful of them...)

Where did I say he wasn't talented? He's generic. That means just that. It doesn't mean he's not talented. I believe I even said he was a good singer. Not the best, but good.

I once asked someone what makes a better song, love or hate. They replied that anything that strikes a huge emotion makes a good somg, but hate adds more of an edge, and edge sells.

Which is what I've been saying.

You might not think so, but his label does--which is why they are marketing him heavily to pop radio.

He's #3 this week on Mainstream Top 40, #29 on AC, #1 on Hot AC. Those are the stations that play pop and soft rock.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Depending on how you look at it, that's always a safe or always a hazardous prediction to make. The reality is that, for no reason whatsoever, the vast majority of artists don't appeal to any audience for any length of time. It's therefore pretty safe to make that prediction about anyone. People are fickle, though, so anyone with more than a minimal threshold level of talent (which Daughtry clearly has) could end up having enough appeal to stand the test of time. Over that threshold point, who "wins" and who "loses" is almost a random process.
