A First-Timer's Take: 12/28-1/8 with Deluxe Dining! New: Boma

So on New Year's Eve we were in Magic Kingdom, and for some reason I decided it would be a better idea to just eat counter-service lunch and dinner than to have sit-down meals. I'm not sure why I decided that :confused3, but so it was.

Anywho, for lunch we ate at the elusive El Pirata y El Perico, since I had heard good things about it, and it was open! :thumbsup2

I've only got one pic of all our food here, so I'll give you the whole order: Two taco salads, a coke, a chocolate milk, chocolate cake, and a chocolate chip cookie (mmmmm chocolate )
P1010191.jpg

The taco salad on the left is how it comes from their counter, and the one on the right is mine after I added some lettuce, cheese, and a wee bit of salsa. There is a room next to the room you order in that has a large fixin's station with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, salsa, and some sauces.
The meat was well-seasoned but I thought it tasted a bit grainy, like perhaps it got overcooked or dried out. But the toppings bar is great and you can really get your money's worth if you like cheese and tomatoes! I saw one lady walk out with a taco salad with veggies and cheese piled up at least an inch over the top of the shell! The chocolate cake was nothing fabulous, but did come with a nice thick layer of dark chocolatey frosting! The cookie tasted like most pre-packaged cookies, but I still enjoyed it :goodvibes
But oh my goodness, this food took FOREVER to get! We ate a late lunch so there was not a huge line of people in front of us; I think only 2 other parties. Considering most of the items on the menu only require the servers to put a scoop of beef into some form of taco shell, you would think this would be among the faster of the CS places, but you would be very wrong! I don't know how long I was actually waiting, but I felt like by the time we got our meal here, we probably could have already been starting on our entree at a sit-down meal. However, the CM did give me an extra chocolate milk free of charge :woohoo:

I'm not sure we'd eat here again. If we were walking by starving and it was open we might stop in, but I'm not a big fan of CS food in general and I think there are other, better CS places in Magic Kingdom, plus having to wait sooooo very long turned me off to this place a bit. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say I'm sure it's not always like that, but I couldn't imagine standing in line had it actually been a busy time of day!

For dinner we went to Pecos Bill's.

Dan ordered a double bacon cheeseburger
P1010195.jpg

He liked this burger a lot and said it tasted like it had actually been grilled. The fries (I helped myself to a few ;)) were yummy and just the right amount of crispy!

I had a BBQ pork sandwich
P1010194.jpg

I know this photo looks kinda gross, but this was so good! The pulled pork was a bit mushy in some bites, but the BBQ sauce was good and tangy, and I just love BBQ pork sandwiches :lovestruc I ordered apple slices instead of fries. The apples were good and I ate them all, but on the bag they are called "Sweet Red" apples, and really they were a bit tart. I didn't mind since I like tart apples as well as sweet, but if you're looking for sweet apples you might be disappointed. However, I'm sure that varies depending on which apple went into which bag....

Anyway, for dessert we each had a chocolate chip cookie. Basic pre-packaged cookies, but still yummy! And for drinks, Dan had coke and I got a bottle of water.

The very best thing about Pecos Bill's is their toppings bar! They have yummy hot cheese that is super-excellent on your fries (if you're a fake-cheese lover like I am), and hot sauteed mushrooms and onions! Had I remembered about the toppings bar, I definitely would have ordered a burger and fries so I could load them up with deliciousness! I didn't even pay attention to this part  but I think they also had the regular shredded cheese, and lettuce and tomatoes.

We both really liked Pecos Bill's and would certainly eat here again. I would probably come here just to get fries and smother them in cheese :cloud9:

thanks for the updates. The 2 counter service food we never tried...we are not much CS family too. My husband and son rather go to a restaurant. I like a good BBQ pork sandwich...I have to try Pecos one day.

It is helpful to hear about some CS options...hours have been changed around I'm thinking some ADR's may change. If we are going to take full advantage of evening EMH's, don't think we'll be making rope drop or 9 a.m. breakfast ADR's!!

I followed you over to here from your comment on my DR, and I'm liking what I see! ;)

You don't hear much talk about Artist Point, but after reading your review, I think it's moved up on my list!

I enjoyed all of your pics.! The written reviews were great as well! I will try the CS you mentioned at MK. The meals looked great and my family would love the fix ins bar! Thanks for sharing!:thumbsup2

Great reviews so far!

Thanks!

Yeah, the BBQ pork was pretty good...have you had others at Disney that you liked??

Yeah I had to change a few things around soon after we arrived when it became apparent we were not going to be leaving the hotel before 10am!

Thanks! I've seen a few good reviews of Artist Point lately, you should definitely try it!

Thanks! And yeah, the fixins are great! I wish more CS had things like that. Pecos Bill pretty much just offers burgers like a lot of other places, but those toppings really make it stand out above the other CS places in the park, IMO :goodvibes

Hello all! :wave2: Just to let you know, this post is totally :offtopic: Well, okay, not completely...it is at least related to Disney food!

So here's the story. It was DH's birthday about a week ago, and he said he wanted a "chocolate death by chocolate" cake. I know there are recipes out there for a "death by chocolate" cake, but I was just thinking hmmmm, what can I make that's super-chocolatey? :scratchin Then I remembered this delicious cake we had from Wilderness Lodge room service, the Triple Chocolate Moose Stampede
P1010017.jpg

And I thought, something like that with a chocolate mousse in the middle would be awesome! And then I thought, hey, aren't there Disney recipes online?? So I looked and, sure enough, I found a recipe for Triple Chocolate Moose Stampede!

Long story short (it's already too late for that isn't it? :rotfl:), I made the cake and it was absolutely delicious!!! Sadly, I didn't take a pic of my cake, which is odd because I often take pictures of my baking, especially when it's for a special occasion...guess I dropped the ball there! :sad2: But the point of this story, and this post, is that the recipe has you make a simple syrup to brush on the cake as well as a ganache to frost the cake, and I had tons extra of both. After a wee bit of thinking, I decided I would make another cake for the next weekend, when my mom was having a few friends over for dinner (DH and I moved in with my folks while we're looking for our own place!). But this time, I decided I would convert the recipe into cupcakes! I made them, and they were super-yummy, and I just love to share, so here I am sharing with you! Hope you like! :goodvibes

Here are all my cuppy-cakes!
P1010906.jpg

While the cake from WL was very dark and moist, the recipe I used is for an old-fashioned milk chocolate cake, so my cake was lighter and more airy. If you make this recipe, I would probably recommend sticking with a denser cake like WL, but it's tasty either way!

I had to make a new batch of mousse since I did use all that up
P1010907.jpg

For the cake, the mousse is used as a filling between the layers, but of course cupcakes don't have layers, so I piped the filling into the middle of the cupcakes
P1010908.jpg

Next step was brushing the cupcakes with the simple syrup. Another note here: the recipe calls for Kahlua, but we didn't have any, so I made my syrup with a mixture of chocolate liquer and amaretto, and it was sooo good!
P1010911.jpg

P1010912.jpg

There they are all coated...I had so much syrup that I gave each cupcake four coats and still had a ton left over! If you make this recipe, I would recommend cutting the syrup recipe in half (or even down to a third or a quarter!). I don't see how anyone could possibly use all the syrup they have you make unless you just dunked the cake right in the pot and let it soak!

Now just apply a nice thick layer of ganache...
P1010915.jpg

...et voila! A scrumptious cupcake!
P1010916.jpg

But wait! It wouldn't be a true Disney cupcake without...
P1010920.jpg

...Mickey sprinkles!!! :thumbsup2

YUM! And here it is cut open, so you can see the filling
P1010921.jpg

These are definitely best eaten the day they are made, because the longer they sit, the more the filling soaks into the cupcake!

:thanks: and I hope you enjoyed the intermission, we will return to regularly scheduled programming later in the day! :goodvibes

WOW! Truly impressive. I wouldn't have the patience to deal with all the little cupcakes!

Oh my word, those cupcakes look AMAZING :worship:

It's breakfast time in the UK but who cares, I'm off to the bakery

Cupcakes for Maber? Please??? (If you didn't save me any you are so dead)

I just ate breakfast and read this whole thing and now I'm hungry again, haha. Yeah, we totally need a girly trip full of eaaaaaaaating!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you! And I don't see anything wrong with the bakery for breakfast :rotfl:

where did you get the mickey sprinkles? :wizard::wizard:

My friend and I bought them at Marceline's Confectionary in Disneyland's DTD. I'm sure they're sold at WDW, but I have no idea where, sorry!

I do still have some and will bring them to you today! :goodvibes Like I mentioned, the filling has been a bit sucked up into the cupcake, but I'm sure you'll manage to get one down anyhow ;)

And that's the problem with my obsession for Disney food reports...I'm hungry all the time! We can stuff our faces next Feb (hopefully!)

On the first, we had breakfast at Boma, which I was super-excited about since I've heard so many good things! But first off I have to say, my pics of our food here are totally lame, so I'll just apologize for that up front :sad2: I also don't remember a ton about all the different foods, so for most of them I don't have much to say besides "good" or "bad"....but hopefully someone somewhere will find this review helpful anyhow! :rotfl:

P1010200.jpg

Here's my first plate. I have banana bread (good), an orange bran muffin (good--I love bran muffins), and a scone (very delicious!). I don't know what kind of fruit was in the scone, but it was my favorite of the bread/pastry items I tried. I also had fresh fruit (good), and African fruit salad (good). The fruit salad had some sort of yogurt sauce on it, I think, and was quite tasty.

P1010201.jpg

Here's my second plate, with curried sausage biscuit skillet thing (yuck), breakfast potatoes (good spices but a bit much salt), bacon (too thin), sausage (a bit spicy--but I am a spice wuss so don't take my word for it!), regular scrambled eggs (good), goat cheese and chive scrambled eggs (very good), and pap (boring). The scrambled eggs were cooked just the way I like them; I find that restaurant scrambled eggs, especially at buffets, are usually too dry for my taste, but these were sooo good! And the eggs with goat cheese and chives were just fabulous! The pap, which is white cornmeal, tasted pretty much like white cornmeal; it's quite bland and I suppose it would fill you up, but it's just not tasty. Not gross, but nothing that makes your mouth water :)

I went back later for another scone and more fruit, and also got a chocolate croissant, which was yummy. Dan ate a lot of the same things I did, but he also got some sauces that I think were out by the eggs and potatoes? One was Boma mustard, which he said was hot and reminded him of wasabi. He also tried a tomatoey sauce thing, which he said was watery and "tastes like a tomato," which I guess makes sense :rotfl:

I also had coffee here and thought it was decent.

I enjoyed Boma and would probably come back, but I tend to like buffets because I want to sample a little bit of everything :goodvibes Anyhow, the food here was well-cooked and they offer some things you might not find at any other buffet, which is nice. I would also certainly be interested in trying Boma for dinner!

I so want those cup cakes!!! Yum-O those look really, really good!!
