First we were on Alaska cruise out of Vancouver the taxis at the airport we unbelievable excellent line was long but there were so many taxis just pulling in it took nothing before we got a cab. Hoping it’s still this way. Also we’re flying out of ohare also taking the coach USA bus from Milwaukee do we get off at the international gate 5 but it seems last time we got off where gates 1 2 3 are since Canada is out of the country thanks for any tips or advice

Regarding O’Hare flight terminal: what airline? The US carriers usually depart from domestic terminals (1, 2, or 3, depending on the airline). Even flights from Vancouver might arrive at a domestic gate (we did this on United in 2015), since US Customs and Immigration has a station in Vancouver. You clear customs before you board the flight. For United and American (at least, these are the two I’ve flown for international flights) flying into O’Hare from an international location without a US Customs service at the departure end, the planes are moved from terminal 5 to the appropriate domestic gate for boarding, so a flight to an international destination might depart from a domestic gate.

There are still tons of taxis in Vancouver, but the other good news is that Uber and Lyft were (FINALLY) approved here and so those are also options for you out of YVR.

sorry I forgot to mention the airlines its air canada

oh the is great about uber and lyft--but we were so surprised at the cab service--when I saw the line well never get to the hotel but the line kept moving--but thanks for the info

That taxi service is not always typical so it's hard to say whether things are the same or not. Hawaii is at the very beginning of cruise season here though so you are less likely to have 4-6 ships worth of passengers all competing for cabs. We do have Uber and Lyft now but there still aren't a lot of them on the road yet, hopefully by summer it will be different.

We fly out of O’Hare And always fly united out of terminal 1. You can check online to see which terminal air canada leaves from But I believe it’s terminal 2.

I'm going to reiterate what Otten said about Uber/Lyft. They are now approved in Vancouver and do have a marketing campaign, plus representatives were very visible in the airport terminal. However, there just aren't a lot of drivers/cars yet. I was in Vancouver for the past 2 weeks for work and every time I tried to get an Uber there just weren't any cars available, and I was in the center of the city. It was just easier to take a cab.

Make sure you check your itinerary to see which airline is operating the flight. For direct flights between the US and Canada it's not uncommon to book with Air Canada or Westjet but the flight is actually flown by a US carrier such as United or Delta.

Tagging on to this question: coming from the US, will the Vancouver taxi's take payment by credit card? Including tip? Will the drivers accept US currency, which is now at a serious premium to Canadian?

They will take cards including tip. Some drivers might be annoyed by it but don't let that deter you. They might take US cash but I highly doubt they would calculate exchange so you'd be getting your change at par and it would be a terrible deal.

So what about the other end of this cruise ... getting off of the ship in Honolulu? And how about for just "around town" for a couple of days?

are there plenty of taxi's or Uber/Lyft from the Port? What about around towns: Waikiki / Perl Harbor / the Airport?
