Just wanted to jot down a few thoughts before we fly home today after 10 days in the parks. We flew Alaska from Calgary to SNA on Dec 23rd - took a taxi to BWPPI - total time from getting our luggage to checking in was just one hour. Great way to start our vacation. First few days, we would do rope drop at the parks.

Security lines were long in the mornings but we found that they moved pretty fast. It was the heaviest on Christmas Day - we got thru within 15 mins. They randomly select people to go thru the metal detectors. As the week progressed, they opened up a few more lines. Lots of security/police/canine unit present.

Ticket lines were long in the mornings especially with first time entries. We found DL to be way busier than DCA. No issues with long lines after the big morning rush. We expected crowds during this holiday time but was still surprised by so many people. Seems like there were lots of new visitors.

We used FastPass for all the rides that we really wanted to do, like Hyperspace Mountain, Star Tours and Indy. Never had to line up for Space Mtn FP before but Hyperspace Mtn was very popular. They would usually run out by noon. The DL App was very useful to us. Over at DCA, RSR was still popular but FP was still available around 10 or 11 am. To us, the FPs in DCA seems to last longer than those in DL. There were long lines for some of the rides in DL - saw Hyperspace at 150 mins on some days and Star Tours at 60-90 mins. Lines would get longer as the day goes on. Heard/saw a few people who would arrive around noon and started looking at their map and then deciding to go on one of the popular rides - not sure if they had to line up or if there were any FPs left. Indy and Big Thunder were down for a bit on some of the days we were there. Overall, we rode all the rides in both parks, some many times over, by using FP and being in the parks at rope drop.

Star Wars - seems to be quite popular! LOL. Saw lots of people wearing SW shirts and carrying light sabers. We liked meeting Darth Vader, Chewbacca and Bona Fett at Launch Bay. Lots of displays to look at. Even DD14 is now a fan after seeing the Path of the Jedi many times over. Hyperspace Mountain and Star Tours were fun to ride.

Parades/fireworks/Fantasmic - there seems to always be a parade in DL. The Christmas parade was on twice a day, PTN was on twice a day, Fantasmic was on twice a day. With all the parades, Main Street seems to be always busy. We saw each parade once and always found a spot near the washrooms close to the Alice in Wonderland ride. We also did the Blue Bayou Fantasmic package on Christmas Day - it was worth it to us to have a good view and some space to sit down, even if it was just a foamie cushion. After seeing Fantasmic once, we stayed away from Adventureland and Frontierland during Fantasmic showings, these areas were very crowded with people. The cast members did a good job of trying to direct the flow of traffic. We watched the fireworks a few times from IASW and the end of Main Street. A few nights, the fireworks were canceled due to the wind. We knew that fireworks can be canceled at anytime, so we made sure that we saw them early on in our trip. In DCA, we always enjoy the Pixar parade.

We made at least one dining reservation a day during this trip - glad that we did this because we saw a lot of people being turned away who don't have reservations. It was also nice to have a place to sit and have dinner and recharge. We tried Carnation Cafe for the first time and enjoyed the food. We also did the Carthay WOC lunch and Ariel's WOC dinner. We enjoyed Ariel's more this time plus the WOC section was closer up front than the Carthay section. Also, had dinner twice at Big Thunder Ranch BBQ - spoke to a few cast members who are also sad that they are going to close this restaurant in a few days. We also tried PCH Grill Buffet on New Year Day, we liked the variety of food offer there - will probably go back again on upcoming trips.

We spent New Year Day in DL in the morning - left around noon as the crowds increased. Went back to the room for a few hours and then headed to DCA. Was expecting more people there but it didn't feel that busy - to us, it seemed lighter than the other days. Had dinner at Ariel's where we got to see the Winter Dreams WOC show from the outdoor seating area and then had preferred section for the Celebrate WOC at 10:15. After the show, we noticed that there were hardly any lines for the rides so we took advantage of this and walked onto Soarin'. We did the countdown in the area in front of California Screamin'. At midnight, fireworks went off and there was a water show with dance music welcoming the new year. We were glad that we choose to bring in the new year in DCA, we weren't sure about how crowded DL was but after seeing all those people lining up for parades and fireworks, we thought we should stay away from DL this night. Also, over in DCA, we did see some of the 9 pm NYE fireworks that went off in DL but heard that the midnight ones were canceled.

Weather and crowds - we wore long sleeved shirts with a hoodie and jeans in the day time and added another jacket in the evenings. Also, having a scarf helped keep us warm. We found the wind to be quite chilly even though we are from Calgary. Like I mentioned before, we were expecting crowds but there were a lot of people in DL. We would spend mornings in DL and head over to DCA in the afternoons. In the evenings, we would be in DL if there was a show or parade that we wanted to see, otherwise we would be over in DCA. Downtown Disney was a very busy place too. There didn't seem to be as much decorations as other years. Missed the garland over Main Street and the Christmas tree in Paradise Pier. Also missed the Jingle Jamboree, this was always a fun place to meet the characters and a great place to get away from the congestions in the parks. Having patience was the key for us, we were in no rush for the rides or restaurants. This helped a lot especially with the big crowds.

We won't be back until July so we made sure that we saw Mickey's Magical Map and Aladdin one more time before they are gone. We ate at BTRBBQ twice before they are gone. We visited the goats at the Jamboree before they are gone. We rode the Columbia, played on Pirates Lair, saw Fantasmic and rode the DL Railroad before they go down. And rode Soarin' a few times before they change it.

We had a great trip like always. Our touring style is pretty laid back and we spend quite a few days in the parks so we usually get to do all that we want to do plus more. In March, we are going to visit WDW again, will need to plan a little more but looking forward to something different. But we are already counting the days till we are back at DL - this will always be our second 'home'.

Thanks for your report, sounds like you had a fun trip. I had a question about the security lines. Were the lines the longest before rope drop, or were they worse later in the morning? Also, did you ever go back to the hotel during the day? If so, did it take long to get through then?

We are going in March and my husband likes to take a break at the hotel for a couple hours in the afternoons. I made the mistake of showing him pictures of the security lines the first couple of days that the metal detectors were in use. Now he's worried about it taking forever to get back into the parks if we leave. Please help me convince him it's not that bad.

We found security lines the longest in the mornings as people wanted to make rope drop and the pictures do look scary with the hoards of people but we found that the lines moved quickly - longest we waited was maybe 15 minutes and that as on Christmas Day. We always went back to our room for a break and had no issue going thru security lines back to the parks, just walked thru with not too many people at all. This was around 4-6 pm each day. I think that the security line photos were taken when buses of people would arrive from Disney parking all at the same time. I am not sure why there were reports of very long waits at security because we didn't experience this at all. And this was during the busiest week between Christmas and NewYears.

We were there the week before Christmas and really the lines for security weren't that bad...Even if you were picked to go through the metal detector it only added on a minute at most it seemed to getting in. No different than if one of your party was lagging a bit looking around rather than focusing on getting to the gates. It helps if everyone in your party thinks to unzip pockets etc on purses back packs etc before getting to the front of the line.

Thanks for your report on your trip - it was very fun to read. Sounds like you had a lot of Disney time, which made for a very relaxed vacation during what could be a very stressful time of year to visit. I am also very envious of all the other trips you have planned. We are from Calgary as well - and we just had a very cold Christmas - so reading this was lovely!

thank you for your report, in section 3 you make an observation about "New Visitors". What made you come to that observation???

The security line on the Harbor Blvd side is always very long. The security line on the downtown disney side is much shorter even in the morning. Sounds like you had a lovely vacation! I also noticed what seemed like a lot of new visitors and I would say that because it felt like I heard more people asking where things are and where they should go.

I think that I read somewhere that it is going away to make room for Star Wars Land.

This was a rumor I read too on MiceAge. Then they sort of retracted that by saying that the idea of demolishing the theater has been put on hold. All of these things are just rumors, not official word from Disney, so take them or leave them. So far, the end of Aladdin's run has been officially announced, but as far as I have seen and heard, Disney has not said anything at all about Mickey's Magical Map in any of their recent press releases.

We noticed that they were wearing 'First Visit' buttons and overhead some reading up about FPs. Plus there were some who asked about where the rides were located and what they were. We thought that if they have visited before, then they would have some sort of idea. There were many who stopped in the middle of the walkways reading the maps and sometimes, these were big groups.

I hope that it is just a rumour, we have always enjoyed this show. So, hopefully it will still be there on our next visit.

Yes, we were lucky that we had many days to enjoy the parks. DD14 and I visit annually, sometimes twice if we can get away with it. This trip, DH and DD19 joined us for 5 days during Christmas but they are not Disney obsessed like we are. LOL. It was chilly in DL for us this time.

it would be kind of weird to close it for the star wars land because of its location its right outside of toon town and next to IASW right? that isnt the area they are building at

did you need a reservation for the new PCH Buffet also? we are planning on giving that a try...we always eat at Goofys for a character meal but since they changed how they do the characters idk if we will eat there or not

I was there on New Years Eve, and spent the day in Disneyland. I was expecting HUGE crowds, and thought it was much more manageable than expected. My cousins were out here from Texas, and I had told the grandmothers that I would take them back to the house they rented when they were ready to go. So, I was there until about 11pm (because the grandmas wanted to shop before leaving). I got to the parks around 8:15am, and though the security lines were long, it didn't take much time to get in. I was a little surprised by that. The lines to get into Disneyland were long, but they were longer on Tuesday when I was there. My cousins and I were able to hit all the big ticket attractions, and they also went into the Launch Bay to meet Chewbacca (one of my cousins had her Chewy shirt on). We had a lot of fun, and after 9pm they were playing some catchy tunes on Main Street (probably the whole park?). People were in such a good mood, and even though Main Street was packed, I had fun watching people dance, and I was dancing, too, as I went from shop to shop.

It was crazy when I left in the evening, and was routed back through the parking structure when I tried to pick them up at the Grand Californian Hotel. I was in front of Disneyland on Harbor at midnight and could have sworn that the fireworks went off there, but will have to check with the cousins that were there to see if they did go off or not.

Oh, I hope the rumor is not true! We are excited to see the show on our first trip there in a few months. :)

We made dinner reservations at the PCH buffet on New Year's Day. There were no characters there, is there supposed to be? Not sure if we would have went there if there are characters, we find that it is hard to enjoy our food when we are always on the look out for characters to come by. We just wanted a quieter place to have dinner outside the parks. We liked the selections better than at Storyteller's.

PCH buffet doesn't have characters, however, Goofy's Kitchen at Disneyland Hotel is going to be refurbished, and during that time PCH dinner buffet will be a character meal - Jan 19 - Feb 9 (something like that).

Disneyland fireworks did not go off. DCA had fireworks at the WOC area, AND there were fireworks in the area of Millionaire building. A server at Carthay took video and it ALMOST looked like it was from Mad Tea Party.
