So I'm contemplating a solo trip (as in by myself with the kids) trip to WDW in either the end of January or early February, and I have a few questions:

1. Does the campground even allow tenting in those months? Would it be too "cold" for tenting?
2. What do the rates average for that time of year for a basic site? (I can't look that far ahead online)
3. We would be flying there - would I be allowed to bring my own tent on the plane as checked baggage?
4. I keep hearing how huge the campground is. We wouldn't have a rental car, nor would we have the money to rent a golf cart. So how bad would it be for getting around the campground from our tent site to the pool, restaurants, stables, Disney parks transportation etc...?

1. Does the campground even allow tenting in those months? Would it be too "cold" for tenting?
. . . yes
. . . could be cool during the nights, so bring comforters or electric blankets
2. What do the rates average for that time of year for a basic site? (I can't look that far ahead online)
. . . check the website for the type of site you are trying t reserve
3. We would be flying there - would I be allowed to bring my own tent on the plane as checked baggage?
. . . depends upon the airline
. . . if a small enough "package", it should be OK

4. I keep hearing how huge the campground is. We wouldn't have a rental car, nor would we have the money to rent a golf cart. So how bad would it be for getting around the campground from our tent site to the pool, restaurants, stables, Disney parks transportation etc...?
. . . yes, to the golf cart, as the place is over 1-square-mile in size, with lots of "loops"
. . . Disney Transportation is good to get to parks, but less than fair to explore the campground

1. Disney is happy to take your money 365 days a year. Too cold, too hot, or just right is up to you. What would you do for blankets or sleeping bags? January nights can be cold.

2. Here are the 2016 rack rates. Add a couple dollars a night for 2017. http://www.mousesavers.com/2016-fort-wilderness-campsites-rates-season-dates/

3. Pack stuff in your luggage or ground ship it back and forth. The Fort will hold it for your arrival and you would have to ship it back when you left. Or pay the extra fee for baggage on the plane.

4. You can walk or take the buses. If you are a Type A personality and hate waiting even a minute for a bus, you might have issues with the Fort transportation. If you are the relaxed kind and are in vacation mode, the bus works just fine. I walk all over no problem.

If you reserve a Tent site (the least expensive), ask for a site in 1500 loop which is close to the main pool, campfire, and Trading Post area.

It can all work if you are prepared.

Agreed - the bus system will get you where you need to be and often walking is quick too! We've never has an issue catching a bus.

I guess my thought is, is that the area is about 1 square mile. How adverse are you to walking? If you and the kids are okay with walking and are fairly healthy, I don't think there is much that you cannot get to in 30 minutes or less by walking. Certainly the bus is okay but can also take you 30 minutes of "Wait" time. For me it's a "Gamble". Just at that moment you decide to Walk (past the bus stop) that's when it drives by.
