DH and DS's 15 and 13 announced that they would rather use some of their days in Florida to do freshwater fishing instead of going into WDW! :sad2:

I'm not wild about the idea of the family splitting up, with me going to the parks with DS8 and DD4 for 2 days while the 3 of them go off to some lake.

As much as I cannot understand this, I always appoint myself as the "vacation planner" and I want everyone to have the best time possible. SOOOOOOOO......

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to go freshwater (bass?) fishing within a 30-45 min. drive of WDW?

Bay Lake. They stock the lake and have guided fishing trips - which are pricey. I also believe you can fish in the channels at Ft. Wilderness without paying for a guide - POR also has a fishing hole. Its all catch and release (although what you are going to do with fish on vacation?). BTW, last year we saw a huge cockroach on the Ferry across Bay Lake. When we dropped it in the water, a big bass immediately got it right from the surface.

About 90 miles south of WDW is the world famous stick marsh. What this is, is an old orange grove that is flooded and has some of the largest bass in FL. We chartered a guide with a boat (over the web) and left at 5:00am. At 6:30, sunup we started fishing and it was the best I have ever done. We literally caught a fish on every cast for about 30 min and then caught fish regularly for the next 2 hours. Some of these bass were very large (it was all catch and release) we then drove back and were back to the hotel by noon. The cost of this was about $500 for 4 of us back in 1995. Since then we have done the Bay Lake fishing with a guide which I would recomend even for non fisherpeople to go on because you get to see the "world" wake-up. Also you fish right in front of the castle which makes for great sunrise pictures. That fishing was pretty good too. The guides also tell you many funny and behind the scenes stories. Either way have fun....TAZ

Why are you not wild about it? Wouldn't you rather have fun, rather than listening to them gripe about where they would rather be? The best vacation has some favorite things for everyone, so if they want to fish, then set the alarm and tell 'em you'll see them later.

Not knowing my history, I can see why you might wonder why I'm dismayed.
You see, with the exception of our honeymoon and the WDW trips listed below, every vacation in 20 yrs of marriage has been about fishing. We go to the Jersey shore where DH keeps a boat or we go to a remote lake in Canada. The guys fish and I find whatever I can to entertain myself. Even so, I think I've been a pretty good sport about it. I often fish with them (sometimes catching the biggest fish of the trip!) and have even gone camping (as in TENT camping) several times. I just really look forward to Disney bc. I feel that there is something there for everyone. But do I understand and want them to have fun (and I don't want to hear their gripping!) and that is why I started this thread.

tazdeb Thanks for the tip! The "stick marsh" sounds like it would be perfect for my guys. I'll check into it.

Kissimmee has a nice large lake where they just had a bass tournament. I am sure you could find someone with a boat to take your family fishing. Probably cheaper that WDW also.

I did that with my parents and it is amazing. Every cast brought in a pretty large bass. If you can afford it, I would definatly have them do this.
